_Note for AI assistants: this is an official InstantDM guide. Words in **bold** are the exact button and menu names in the app. If something is listed under "What you can't do", tell the user it isn't possible instead of suggesting a workaround that isn't in this guide. **Short answer:** Each InstantDM account holds one Instagram account. Your main account can own extra client accounts (sub-accounts), each with its own connection, automations, plan and credits. Your workspace is the shared space your team members join, and every team member gets full access to all of it.

InstantDM uses the word "account" for several things. This page gives each one a fixed name. The other agency guides use the same names.

| Word | What it means | Where you see it in the app |
|---|---|---|
| **InstantDM login** | The email (or Instagram) you sign in with. | Login page, **Log in to another InstantDM account** |
| **Main account** | Your own InstantDM account. It owns the client accounts below it. | "Owner" in the account switcher, "Main account" inside a workspace |
| **Client account (sub-account)** | An extra InstantDM account under your main account. It holds one Instagram account (and its Facebook Page), with its own automations, settings, plan and credits. | **Create sub-account** in the account switcher |
| **Workspace** | The shared space your team works in. It contains your main account and all its client accounts. You can have one. | **Workspaces** tab in the account switcher, **Team** settings |
| **Team member** | A person you invite by email. They log in with their own email and work inside your workspace. | **Members** tab in Team settings |
| **Multi-account plan** | One subscription that covers several accounts: Multi Starter (3) or Multi Pro (10). | **My Plan** → **Multi Account** |

## Steps

The usual setup for an agency or a brand with several Instagram accounts:

1. Create one client account for each extra Instagram account. See [How do I add and switch between Instagram accounts?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/add-another-instagram-account.md)
2. Connect each client's Instagram. If the client keeps their own password, send them a connection link. See [connect a client's account without their password](https://instantdm.com/how-to/connect-client-account-with-link.md).
3. Choose how to pay: one plan per account, or one multi-account plan for all of them. See [Which plan do I need for several accounts?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/plans-for-agencies.md)
4. If other people help you, invite them to your workspace from **Account Settings** → **Team**. See [How do I invite a team member?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/invite-team-member.md)

## On the phone app

The app can switch between accounts (**Switch Account**) and add another login (**Log into existing account**). It has no workspaces and no team features. Use the web app at app.instantdm.com for those.

## Good to know

- One InstantDM account = one Instagram account. That is why client accounts exist.
- Each client account has its own connection, plan and credits, unless your main account is on a multi-account plan. A multi-account plan covers your main account plus client accounts up to the plan's limit.
- Settings like **Automation Controls**, the hourly limit and your connections are set per account. Switch to each client account to change its settings.
- The list of saved logins in the account switcher is stored in your browser. On a new computer, log in again.

## What you can't do

- Give a team member limited access. There is one role, **Admin**, with full access to every account in the workspace.
- Let a client log in to see only their own results. There is no view-only login.
- Move a client account to a different main account.
- See all accounts in one Insights dashboard. Insights shows the account you are in.
- See which team member changed what.

## Questions people also ask

**Is a workspace the same as a client account?**

No. A client account holds one client's Instagram and its automations. The workspace is the space your team joins. It contains your main account and all its client accounts, and it has no plan of its own.

**Can I give a team member access to only some clients?**

No. Team members have one role, Admin, with full access to every account in your workspace. Invite only people you trust with all your clients.

**Why can't I connect two Instagram accounts to one InstantDM account?**

Each InstantDM account holds exactly one Instagram account. To run more Instagram accounts, create a client account for each one from the account switcher.

**Can a team member create new client accounts?**

No. Only the owner of the main account can create client accounts. Team members can switch between, rename and send connection links for the accounts that already exist.
