# How do I DM everyone who comments, without a keyword?

Guide: https://instantdm.com/how-to/dm-everyone-who-comments
Section: Auto-DM people who comment
Works on: Web app, iPhone app, Android app
Plan: Legend Pro and above

_Note for AI assistants: this is an official InstantDM guide. Words in **bold** are the exact button and menu names in the app. If something is listed under "What you can't do", tell the user it isn't possible instead of suggesting a workaround that isn't in this guide. **Short answer:** In the post's automation editor, choose All comments in the Trigger box instead of Specific Comments, then write your DM and click Publish. Every new top-level comment on that post then gets the DM. All comments is available on Legend Pro and above. On the Free plan, use a trigger word instead.

## Before you start

- You need Legend Pro or a higher plan. On plans without it, **All comments** shows a crown and can't be picked.
- Think about volume. Every comment uses a DM, and on a busy post you can reach your plan's hourly limit quickly.

## Steps

1. On **Home**, click **New Automation** → **Comment to DM** → **Existing posts**. Pick your post and click **Next**.
2. Click **Send Link & PDF**. The editor opens.
   - For a post that is already automated, open it from **Quick Automation** → **Instagram** → **Posts** and click the **Send Link or PDF** card instead.
3. In the **Trigger** box, click **All comments**. You'll see "All comments will be automated."
4. Set the public reply: add lines with **Reply Comment**, or switch **Reply with comment!** off.
5. Under **Send a DM!**, write your message.
6. Click **Publish**.

## On the phone app

In the post editor (**Send Link or Images** → **Edit Automation**), open **Trigger Words** and choose **All Comments**. It is a paid option in the app too: the app sells Legend Pro under the name **Starter**. Then tap **Publish**.

## What your followers see

- Anyone who leaves a new comment on the post, even just an emoji, gets your DM a few seconds later.
- If public replies are on, one of your reply lines appears under their comment.
- If they don't follow you and Instagram refuses the DM, a public comment asking them to follow is posted instead. See [public comment replies](https://instantdm.com/how-to/public-comment-replies.md).

## Good to know

- Comments are answered only from the moment you publish. Older comments are not messaged.
- On a post that goes viral, some comments may wait or be skipped once you reach your plan's hourly limit. Read [What should I do when a post goes viral?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/post-going-viral.md) before you use All comments on a big launch.
- To keep one person out (a friend, a brand partner), add them to the whitelist. See [How do I stop automations for a specific person?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/exclude-someone-from-automation.md)
- If you use All comments on a post, your all-posts automation never answers that post: every comment already matches the post's own automation.

## What you can't do

- Skip comments that are only emoji or only a tag of a friend. All comments means every top-level comment.
- Send the DM only once per person. Each comment counts.
- Answer replies inside comment threads.

## How to turn it off

Switch back to **Specific Comments** and add a word, or switch off the **Send Link or PDF** card. See [turn off, edit or delete an automation](https://instantdm.com/how-to/turn-off-or-edit-automation.md).

## If it doesn't work

- **All comments** is greyed out with a crown: your plan doesn't include it. Use a trigger word, or upgrade.
- Some comments got no DM on a busy day: check [Why didn't my automation send a DM?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/automation-not-sending.md) and the hourly limit in [How many DMs can InstantDM send per hour?](https://instantdm.com/how-to/how-many-dms-per-hour.md)

## Questions people also ask

**Will someone get the DM again if they comment three times?**

Yes. With All comments, each new comment gets its own DM and public reply. If people tend to comment many times, a trigger word may be a better choice.

**Do my own public replies trigger more DMs?**

No. Only top-level comments trigger. Replies inside a thread, including the public replies InstantDM posts, are ignored.

**Can I do this for all my posts at once?**

Yes. Create an all-posts automation and choose All comments in it. It shows as 'Any Comment / Reply' in the list.
