# Can an automation reply only once per person?

**Short answer:** Only partly. The Any Message DM trigger has First time only, which replies once per person, ever, and Once a day. Comment, story-reply and keyword automations answer every matching message, so someone who comments twice gets the DM twice. In a flow you can use a tag to skip people who already got it.

## Before you start

Here is what each automation does when the same person triggers it again:

| Automation | Same person again |

| Comment to DM (any type) | Gets the DM and public reply again, every time |
| Story to DM | Gets the DM again, every time |
| DM keyword | Gets the reply again, every time |
| DM **Any Message** + **First time only** | Never again |
| DM **Any Message** + **Once a day** | Again after 24 hours |

## Steps

For DMs, use **Any Message** with **First time only**:

1. On **Home**, click **New Automation** and choose **DM Automation**.
2. Click **Instagram DMs**, then **Next**, then **Lead Gen**.
3. Under **ENTRY POINT**, choose **Any Message**.
4. Under **⏱️ Select Interval**, choose **First time only**.
5. Add your reply with **Add Step** → **Text Message**.
6. Click **Save**, then **Publish & Activate**.

### In Flow Automation: skip people with a tag

This needs Trendsetter and above. It works best for keyword DMs.

- Right after the trigger, add a **Condition** step with the rule **Tag** → **doesn't have tag** → for example `got-guide`.
- Connect **True** to your messages. Leave **False** empty, or connect a short "You already have it" message.
- After your messages, add a **Tag Contact** step that applies `got-guide`.
- Click **Set Live**.

For comment flows, the welcome message and public reply still go out each time. The tag check only stops the steps after the person taps the welcome button. ## On the phone app

In the **DM** tab, tap **Create New**, choose **Automate All Messages** and set **⏱️ Select Interval** to **First time only**. Flows with tag checks can only be built on the web.

## What your followers see

With **First time only**, a person gets your reply on their first message and never again. With a comment automation, they get the DM each time they comment your keyword.

## Good to know

- Rarely, the same person can get a DM twice even with **First time only**, for example when Instagram sends two messages a second apart.
- In flows, **Ask only if unknown** on a question skips it when the person already answered it in any flow on your account. That avoids asking twice, but the flow still runs.

## What you can't do

- Limit comment or story-reply automations to once per person.
- Skip the public comment reply for repeat commenters.
- Use **First time only** on keyword DMs.

## How to turn it off

**Someone commented twice and got my link twice. Is that a bug?**

No, that is how comment automations work. Each new matching comment gets another DM and another public reply.

**Can I stop the public comment reply for people who already got the link?**

No. Every matching comment gets a public reply. Even in a flow, the first welcome message and public reply go out before any check can run.

**Does First time only work for comments?**

No. It is only on the Any Message trigger for DMs.
