# How do I tag contacts?

**Short answer:** On the Contacts page, click the tag icon in a contact's Tags column, pick tags or create a new one, and click Save. To tag people automatically, add a Tag Contact step to a flow, Lead Gen or DM automation. You can then filter and export by tag.

Tags are short labels like "hot-lead", "paid" or "wholesale" that you put on a person. Use them to find people later, export a group, or send different messages in a flow.

## Steps

1. Click **Contacts** in the sidebar and pick **Instagram** or **Facebook**.
2. Find the person. In their **Tags** column, click the tag icon.
   - A small window opens with their username in the title.
3. Pick one or more tags under "Select tags". Click a selected tag's × to remove it.
4. To make a new tag, type it in "New tag name" and click **Create** (or press Enter).
5. Click **Save**. You'll see "Tags updated."

You can do the same from a contact's detail panel: click their name, use the **Tags** section, then click **Save** ("Contact saved.").

## Tag people automatically

Add a **Tag Contact** step so everyone who reaches it gets the tag:

- In a **Flow Automation**: add the **Tag Contact** step, choose **Tags to apply** (and optional **Tags to remove**), then **Set Live**. Flows are on Trendsetter and above.
- In a **Lead Gen** or DM keyword automation: click **Add Step**, then **Tag Contact**.

## On the phone app

The app has no Contacts page. In an Instagram DM keyword automation (Instagram → **DM** tab), you can add a **Tag Contact** step with **Manage Tags** and **Create New Tag**. On the **Flows** screen you can filter a flow's contacts by tag.

## Good to know

- Tags you create on the Contacts page are the same tags you see in the flow builder.
- **Filter by tag** on the Contacts page shows everyone with that tag. **Export** then downloads only them.

## What you can't do

- Tag or untag many contacts at once from the Contacts page.
- Rename or delete a tag from the Contacts page.
- Combine **Filter by tag** with **Filter by flow**.

**Can I tag many contacts at once?**

Not from the Contacts page. Tag people one by one, or add a Tag Contact step to your automation so everyone who reaches that step is tagged.

**How do I rename or delete a tag?**

You can't rename or delete a tag from the Contacts page. You can remove a tag from each contact.

**Can the AI tag people for me?**

Yes. An AI Reply step in a flow can tag people based on your instructions. Those tags show on the Contacts page and you can remove them.
