Every social media management tool promises the same three things: schedule everywhere, measure everything, save hours. The differences that actually cost you money live in the pricing model, the renewal terms, and the gap between a tool's G2 score and its Trustpilot page. We compared seven tools on exactly those things. The short version: Metricool is the best pick for most small teams (free plan, from $25/month), Social by IDM is the AI-agent-first pick with the cheapest team-usable entry (from $19/month), Buffer has the best free plan and per-channel pricing (from $5/channel), SocialBee owns content recycling (from $29/month), Later owns visual Instagram planning (from $25/month), and Hootsuite (from $99/user) and Sprout Social (from $79/user) serve enterprise teams. All prices verified July 2026 on each vendor's pricing page.

Pricing and plan limits are as of July 2026, from each vendor's public pricing page. G2 blocks automated checks, so G2 figures come from its public listing snapshots; Trustpilot scores were checked against the live pages. Vendors change plans without notice — verify before buying.
Who this comparison is for
- Creators and solo brands scheduling across 3–8 platforms who need the bill to stay flat as they add channels.
- Small teams and agencies where the real cost driver is seats and client workspaces, not the sticker price.
- Anyone burned by an annual renewal who wants the review-site evidence before committing again.
How we evaluated the tools
- Real cost at your shape. Not the sticker price: the price at your channel count, seat count, and brand count. The five pricing models here are not comparable one-to-one, so we decode them below.
- Free entry. A usable free plan or a real trial, and what happens at the end of it.
- Evidence. G2 and Trustpilot ratings with review counts, both platforms, because the gap between them is the most honest signal in this category.
- Feature fit for 2026. Scheduling and analytics are table stakes; the differentiators now are recycling, approval workflows, platform breadth, and whether an AI agent can drive the tool.
- Renewal honesty. Intro-vs-renewal pricing, cancellation complaint patterns, and annual-plan traps, including for our own product.
Decode the pricing model first — it matters more than the price
Five different things are being metered across these seven tools, and picking the wrong model for your growth pattern costs more than picking the wrong tool. Per-channel (Buffer) grows when you add platforms. Per-seat (Hootsuite, Sprout) grows when you hire. Per-brand (Metricool) grows when you take on clients. Social sets (Later) bundle 8 profiles per brand. Pooled accounts (Social by IDM) cap total connections regardless of how you split them.
Here's the same scenario priced everywhere: one brand, five connected profiles, two teammates. Computed from July 2026 list prices, using annual billing where that's the advertised rate.
| Tool | Plan that fits | Monthly cost | What forces the next tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social by IDM | Pro (15 accounts, unlimited members) | $19 | More than 1 workspace or 15 accounts |
| Metricool | Starter (solo) / Advanced (team features) | $25 / $67 | Approval workflows and team roles live on Advanced |
| Later | Growth (2 users, 16 profiles) | $37.50 (annual) | A third user, or 180 posts/profile/month cap |
| Buffer | Team (unlimited users) × 5 channels | $50 (annual) | Every added channel adds $10–12 |
| SocialBee | Pro (3 users, 25 profiles) | $82.50 (annual) | Bootstrap and Accelerate allow only 1 user |
| Sprout Social | Essentials × 2 seats | $158 (annual) | Every teammate is another $79–399 |
| Hootsuite | Standard × 2 seats | $198 (annual) | Every teammate is another $99+ |
Read the last column hardest. The cheap tool for you is the one whose next tier you'll never hit.
1. Metricool — best overall for small teams

Best for: small teams and multi-client managers who want scheduling, analytics, and competitor tracking in one bill that doesn't count seats.
Metricool wins this comparison on structure, not hype. It prices by brands (one brand = one bundle of all that brand's networks), team members are unlimited on the Advanced tier, and the platform list is the widest here: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile, and, uniquely in this list, Twitch. Its evidence base is the healthiest too: 3.9 on Trustpilot across roughly 619 reviews is the best score-at-volume in the category, alongside a 4.5 on G2 (~83 reviews, July 2026).
- Scheduling + analytics + unlimited history on paid tiers, ads analytics for Facebook/Instagram/TikTok ads
- Competitor tracking (5 profiles free, 100 on Starter)
- Post-approval system and role management on Advanced
- PDF/PPT reports and a Looker Studio connector for client reporting
- AI credits per brand per month (5 free / 20 Starter / 35 Advanced)
Pricing (metricool.com/pricing, July 2026): Free — 1 brand, 20 posts/month, 30 days of analytics. Starter — from $25/month monthly (€20 annual) for 5 brands. Advanced — from $67/month monthly (€54 annual) for 15 brands, up to 50. Custom above that. EUR and USD price books differ slightly; the page has a currency selector.
- Pros: real free plan; brand pricing with unlimited seats at Advanced; best Trustpilot record here; widest platform list; strong client-reporting stack.
- Cons: LinkedIn connection is paid-only; free plan caps at 20 posts/month; the interface packs a lot into one tab, and new users feel it; USD monthly prices run higher than the EUR figures the brand is known for.
The takeaway: if you buy one tool for a small team without reading further, buy this one.
2. Social by IDM — best for AI-agent and API-driven workflows

Best for: creators, agencies, and builders who want an AI agent — or their own code — operating the scheduler, and the most connected accounts per dollar at entry.
Social by IDM, built by InstantDM, is the newest tool in this list, and its bet is that 2026's scheduler should treat an AI agent as a first-class user: every plan ships a REST API, an MCP server, a Claude skill bundle, and signed webhooks, so an agent can draft, schedule, and pull analytics without touching the dashboard (socialbyidm.com/api, July 2026). The other number that stands out is account density: the $19/month Pro plan includes 15 pooled connected accounts and unlimited team members. That's the cheapest team-usable entry in this comparison. It covers 8 platforms: Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, and YouTube.
- Unlimited scheduled posts and unlimited team members on every plan
- API + MCP + webhooks on every plan, not gated to enterprise
- Per-platform captions and timing; AI captions (bring your own key)
- Cross-platform analytics; approval workflows; roles on Max and up
- Workspaces: 1 (Pro) / 3 (Max) / 5 (Ultra), accounts pooled across them
Pricing (socialbyidm.com/pricing, July 2026): Pro — $19/month, 15 accounts. Max — $49/month, 3 workspaces, 20 accounts. Ultra — $99/month, 5 workspaces, 50 accounts. Annual is intro-priced: Pro's first year is $119.99, renewing at $190/year — factor the renewal, not the intro. 4-day free trial, billed on day 5; no free plan.
- Pros: lowest team-friendly entry price here; only tool in this list with agent-grade API/MCP access on all plans; unlimited posts and members everywhere; 8-platform coverage.
- Cons: launched in 2026 with no G2, Trustpilot, or Capterra footprint yet; 4-day trial is the shortest here; no unified inbox yet (listed as coming); no link-in-bio; annual renewal is ~58% above the intro year.
The takeaway: the value and the API story are real; the track record isn't written yet. Run the trial on your real accounts and judge it against the tools on this page.
3. Buffer — best free plan and per-channel flexibility

Best for: creators and small brands on 3–5 channels who want to start free and pay only for what they connect.
Buffer is the category's honesty benchmark: public salaries, a public revenue dashboard, and the only unlimited-time free plan among the big names: 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, slots refreshing as posts publish, plus an API key with 3,000 requests/month even on free (buffer.com/pricing, July 2026). Paid pricing is per channel: Essentials at $5/channel/month billed annually, Team at $10/channel with unlimited members and approval flows. Platform coverage is the widest in this list alongside Metricool's: all the majors plus Google Business Profile, Mastodon, and Bluesky.
- Queue-based scheduling with a calendar, browser extension, and Ideas library
- AI Assistant on all tiers, including free
- Start Page link-in-bio included
- Analytics and reports on Essentials; branded reports on Team
- First-comment scheduling and hashtag manager on paid tiers
Pricing (buffer.com/pricing, July 2026): Free — 3 channels. Essentials — $5/channel/month annual ($6 monthly, corroborated). Team — $10/channel/month annual ($12 monthly), unlimited users. Channels above 10 discount further per Buffer's page.
- Pros: best free plan; per-channel pricing is fair at small scale; unlimited team members on Team; the widest platform list; a 3.2 Trustpilot that, in this category, counts as good.
- Cons: per-channel math turns against you past ~8 channels; analytics are lighter than Metricool's; no unified inbox worth the name; engagement features are basic.
The takeaway: start here free; leave only when your channel count makes the math flip.
4. SocialBee — best evergreen content recycling

Best for: creators and consultants whose content library should keep working — category-based recycling that re-queues evergreen posts forever.
SocialBee's whole product is built around content categories: buckets like "tips," "promos," and "evergreen" that fill a schedule automatically and re-cycle old posts on rotation. That single idea is why it holds the highest G2 rating in this comparison (4.8, ~472 reviews, July 2026). Categories are tier-gated (10 on Bootstrap, 50 on Accelerate, unlimited on Pro), which tells you exactly how central they are. All tiers include unlimited AI content generation, and the agency tiers scale to 150 profiles with per-client workspaces.
- Category-based scheduling with evergreen re-queueing and post variations
- Unlimited AI content generation on every tier
- Workspaces and approval workflows on Pro and up
- Platforms: all the majors plus Google Business Profile and Bluesky
- Concierge migration and 30-day money-back guarantee
Pricing (socialbee.com/pricing, July 2026): Bootstrap — $29/month ($24.2 annual), 5 profiles, 1 user. Accelerate — $49 ($40.8 annual), 10 profiles. Pro — $99 ($82.5 annual), 25 profiles, 3 users, 5 workspaces. Agency tiers: Pro50 $179 to Pro150 $449. 14-day trial, no card, no free plan.
- Pros: recycling categories genuinely reduce weekly workload; highest G2 score here; clean agency tiering; money-back guarantee.
- Cons: single user until the $99 Pro tier; Bootstrap withholds bulk import and advanced analytics; Trustpilot sample is small (~56 reviews at 3.7); analytics depth trails Metricool.
The takeaway: if your content is evergreen and your bottleneck is posting consistency, this is the specialist.
5. Later — best visual Instagram and TikTok planning

Best for: Instagram-first creators and brands who plan feeds visually and monetize through link-in-bio.
Later grew up on Instagram (it started as Latergramme in 2014), and it still shows in the right ways: a drag-and-drop visual planner that previews your grid, best-time scheduling, and Linkin.bio bundled on every plan. Since merging with influencer-marketing firm Mavrck, the company sells two products; the scheduler is "Later Social," rated 4.5 on G2. One hard fact to check against your stack: Later does not support X. The platform list is Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Snapchat (later.com/pricing, July 2026).
- Visual feed planner with grid preview, stories and Reels scheduling
- Linkin.bio link-in-bio on all plans, unlimited media storage
- Best-times-to-post and trend-aware scheduling on Growth and up
- Social inbox and approval workflows on Growth
- Metered by social sets: 1 set = up to 8 profiles, one per platform
Pricing (later.com/pricing, July 2026): Starter — $25/month ($18.75 annual), 1 set, 1 user, 30 posts/profile/month. Growth — $50 ($37.50 annual), 2 sets, 2 users, 180 posts/profile. Scale — $110 ($82.50 annual), 6 sets, 4 users, unlimited posts. 14-day trial; no free plan.
- Pros: the best visual planning experience for Instagram/TikTok; link-in-bio included; sensible two-user entry at Growth.
- Cons: no X support at all; post caps per profile on Starter and Growth; Trustpilot 1.6 (~346 reviews) with surprise-renewal complaints the dominant theme — diarize your renewal date.
The takeaway: the strongest pick when Instagram is the business and the grid is the storefront; a non-starter if X matters.
6. Hootsuite — best enterprise all-rounder

Best for: larger organizations that want scheduling, inbox, monitoring, and AI under one established roof and can budget per seat.
Hootsuite is the incumbent, and for big teams it still earns the shortlist: unified inbox, brand monitoring, AI content generation ("Wisdom, your AI teammate"), trend forecasting on Professional, and enterprise compliance up the stack. The commercial reality: no free plan (killed in 2023), entry at $99 per user per month on annual billing with a 10-account cap, and the worst Trustpilot page in this comparison. That 1.3 from ~554 reviews, dominated by charges-after-cancellation and refund complaints, sits against a 4.3 on G2 from the largest review base here (~7,109).
- Unified social inbox with automation on Professional and up
- AI post and image generation on all plans
- Brand monitoring; full social listening at Enterprise
- Approval workflows and message routing on Advanced
- Platforms include the majors plus WhatsApp and Bluesky
Pricing (hootsuite.com/plans, July 2026): Standard — $99/user/month, 10 accounts. Professional — $199/user/month, unlimited accounts. Advanced — $399/user/month. Enterprise custom. Prices shown are annual-billing rates; monthly-billing pricing isn't published. 14-day trial with posting limits.
- Pros: deepest all-in-one feature set outside Sprout; biggest G2 evidence base; strong monitoring and inbox tooling.
- Cons: $99/user entry prices out small teams; 10-account cap on Standard; the 4.3-vs-1.3 review split is the widest here — read the cancellation complaints before signing annual paperwork.
The takeaway: a rational enterprise choice; an expensive and risky small-team one.
7. Sprout Social — best enterprise analytics and listening

Best for: organizations that treat social as business intelligence — reporting, listening, and workflows that justify per-seat pricing.
Sprout Social is the most polished analytics and workflow product in the category, and G2's Winter 2026 reports named it #1 in Social Listening. The Smart Inbox, tagging, competitor insights, and report builder are the strongest in this comparison; the AI layer (Enhance Post/Reply, sentiment) lands on the upper tiers. It's priced accordingly: per seat, on annual billing, from $79/user/month on the new Essentials tier (5 profiles) through $199 Standard, $299 Professional, and $399 Advanced, with Listening as an unpriced add-on. Its Trustpilot (1.7, ~83 reviews) tells the same story as Hootsuite's: enterprise product love on G2 (4.4, ~6,957), billing pain for small customers elsewhere.
- Smart Inbox with tagging, sentiment (Advanced), and spike alerts
- Best-in-class reporting; premium analytics add-on
- Social listening add-on rated #1 by G2 Winter 2026
- API access on the Advanced tier
- 30-day free trial, no card — the longest trial in this list
Pricing (sproutsocial.com/pricing, July 2026): Essentials — $79/user/month annual, 5 profiles ($99 monthly). Standard — $199/user/month annual, 5 profiles. Professional — $299, unlimited profiles. Advanced — $399. Enterprise custom. Add-ons priced on request.
- Pros: the best analytics and listening stack here; longest trial; huge G2 evidence base.
- Cons: per-seat pricing compounds fast (two people on Standard is ~$4,800/year); profile caps below Professional; Trustpilot complaints mirror Hootsuite's contract themes.
The takeaway: buy it for the intelligence layer, with a procurement department in the loop.
Also worth knowing
Seven more tools show up on real shortlists, without full verification passes here: Planable (the cleanest client-approval workflows in the category), Agorapulse (inbox-first management), Sendible (agency reporting), Publer and Pallyy (budget schedulers), Vista Social (fast-moving feature set), and Zoho Social (natural fit inside the Zoho suite). If none of the seven above fits, start your second pass there.
Why Metricool ranks first
Stated criteria, applied the same way to every tool on this page:
- Evidence at volume: the only tool here that scores well on BOTH review platforms (4.5 G2, 3.9 Trustpilot across ~619 reviews). Everyone else either splits hard (Hootsuite, Sprout, Later) or lacks volume (SocialBee, Social by IDM).
- Structure: brand-based pricing with unlimited seats on Advanced beats per-seat and per-channel models for the small teams this guide serves.
- Free entry: a real free plan plus the widest platform list, including networks nobody else covers.
- Concessions: Buffer's free plan is more generous per channel; SocialBee recycles content better; Later plans a grid better; Social by IDM is cheaper at entry and far ahead on API/MCP; Sprout's analytics are deeper. If one of those is your deciding criterion, that's your tool.
Pick by operator: human-first, or human + AI agent
There's one more lens worth applying before you choose, because it splits this list cleanly in two. Six of these seven tools assume the same operator: a person, in a dashboard, clicking. Metricool is the best version of that human-first model, and if that's how your team works, the ranking above is your answer.
Social by IDM ranks second because it's built for two operators at once. Humans get the normal calendar UI. AI agents get their own front door: an MCP server, a Claude skill bundle, and a REST API with signed webhooks, on every plan (socialbyidm.com/api, July 2026). Its own homepage puts it plainly: post manually, connect Claude or OpenClaw, or wire in your own model — a Codex-based agent, for instance — via the API. UI for the human, MCP for the agent, one shared workspace.
What that looks like in practice:
| Use case | Human-first workflow | Human + agent workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Filling next week's calendar | You draft, schedule, and slot every post in the dashboard | Your agent drafts and schedules via MCP; you review and approve in the UI |
| Monthly performance review | You export reports and read them | Your agent pulls analytics through the API and answers "what worked and why" in chat |
| Agency posting pipeline | A team member per client, in the tool daily | Webhooks push publish/fail events into your stack; humans handle exceptions only |
The honest boundary: if nobody on your team uses an AI agent, this entire advantage is worth nothing to you — pick on price, platforms, and reviews like the rest of this guide. Elsewhere in the list, Buffer's free API key (3,000 requests/month) supports light automation, and Sprout's API exists but sits on the $399/seat tier. Nobody else treats the agent as a first-class user.
How to choose the right tool
- Count what grows. Channels growing? Per-channel pricing punishes you eventually (Buffer past ~8 channels). Team growing? Per-seat pricing punishes you immediately (Hootsuite, Sprout). Clients growing? Price by brands or workspaces (Metricool, SocialBee, Social by IDM).
- Check your platform list against theirs. Later has no X. Most tools lack Twitch (Metricool has it) and Mastodon (Buffer has it). Don't assume.
- Read both review sites. The G2-vs-Trustpilot split is the fastest due-diligence in this category: product quality on one, exit costs on the other.
- Price the renewal, not the intro. Intro-year annual discounts (including Social by IDM's) renew higher. Write the renewal number in your budget, not the launch offer.
- Run one real week in the trial. Connect your actual accounts, schedule your actual content, pull one report. Every tool here offers at least 4 days free; the mismatches surface in two.
What businesses often get wrong
- Buying the enterprise tool at a small-team size. Two seats of Sprout Standard cost more per year than five years of Metricool Starter. Buy the tier that matches this quarter, not the aspiration.
- Ignoring what an "account" means. A channel (Buffer), a profile (SocialBee), a brand (Metricool), a set (Later), and a pooled connection (Social by IDM) are five different units. Most "this tool is cheaper" claims die on this detail.
- Letting annual plans auto-renew unwatched. The single most common complaint pattern across these tools' Trustpilot pages. Calendar the renewal date the day you buy.
- Confusing scheduling with engagement. A scheduler fills the feed; it doesn't answer the DMs the feed generates. That's a different tool category — pair, don't substitute.
What matters most in 2026
Two shifts are re-sorting this category. First, AI moved from captions to control. Every tool now generates post text; the new question is whether an AI agent can operate the tool itself. Social by IDM ships MCP and API access on every plan, Buffer exposes an API even free, and Sprout gates its API to the $399 tier. That spread is where tools actually differ now. Second, platform churn became a buying criterion. X's API pricing pushed Later out entirely, while Threads, Bluesky, and even Twitch support vary tool by tool. The platform list you'll need in 2027 is the one to shop for now.
The verdict
Default to Metricool for the best balance of price, evidence, and coverage. Start free with Buffer if you're under four channels. Pick Social by IDM when AI agents or APIs run your workflow, SocialBee when evergreen recycling is the job, Later when the Instagram grid is the storefront, and Hootsuite or Sprout Social when you're buying for an organization rather than a team. Whatever you pick: decode the pricing model, read both review sites, and put the renewal date in your calendar.
