You typed Chatbase vs Tidio because you need a chat tool and both names keep showing up. We tested and scored them on the same rubric. Tidio is a live inbox with Lyro and Flows stacked on top. Chatbase is an AI you train on your docs. They are not the same product wearing different logos.
Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog, so weigh our take accordingly. InstantDM is not in the head-to-head. It is the Meta row when the visitor never hits your website. Every price below is from the vendor's public page, 16 August 2026. Vendors change plans without notice. Check their current pricing before you buy.
TL;DR
- Chatbase scored 50 / 80. Best when the job is "train on our help center and put it on the site." Credits jump hard at real volume.
- Tidio scored 55 / 80. Best when a human has to take the chat and the store is on Shopify. Three meters (human chats, Lyro, Flows) stack the bill.
- InstantDM scored 52 / 80 on this website-first card and 10 / 10 on Meta. Pick it when the conversation starts as a comment, story reply, or Click-to-Message ad.
| Chatbase | Tidio | InstantDM (Meta only) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our score | 50 / 80 | 55 / 80 | 52 / 80 (website card) / 10 on Meta |
| Buy it for | Doc-trained AI on a site or helpdesk | Human live chat + Shopify + Lyro | Instagram, Facebook, Messenger ads |
| Skip it if | You need a staffed live queue all day | You only wanted a knowledge bot | You only need a website widget |
| Paid from (annual) | Hobby $32/mo, 700 credits | Starter $24.17/mo, 100 billable chats | Legend Pro $9.99/mo flat |
How we tested and scored
We do not publish a vs post from a feature grid we copied. We tested and scored Chatbase and Tidio the same week, 16 August 2026.
What we actually did:
- Created accounts and walked first-run setup for a website widget.
- Read each official pricing page and the full compare tables, including add-ons.
- Mapped every meter: Chatbase message credits; Tidio billable human conversations, Lyro AI conversations, and Flows visitors.
- Checked channel lists on those same pages, not on directories.
- Ran eight scored scenarios (below) and wrote down a 1–10 on each.
- Modeled three volume bills from published rates, not from a sales quote.
What we did not do: we did not feed both tools the same 200-ticket corpus and invent an accuracy percentage. If a vendor published a resolution rate, we treat it as their claim. Our scores are the rubric, not a lab paper.
The hero is both logos with VS in the middle. The screenshots later in the post are each company's homepage from the same day we scored them, 16 August 2026.
Scoring: eight criteria, 1–10 each, 80 points total. A 5 is "it does the job, with friction." A 9 is "this is why you buy it." InstantDM sits in a third column so you can see when the website pair is the wrong purchase.
The scorecard we used
| Criterion | What we tested | Chatbase | Tidio | InstantDM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setup to first reply | Time from signup to a working widget or flow | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| AI on your content | Upload docs, scrape a site, stay on-source | 9 | 6 | 5 |
| Live human inbox | Visitor list, seats, takeover, tickets | 4 | 9 | 6 |
| Pricing predictability | Can you forecast next month from the public page | 6 | 4 | 9 |
| Website chat marketing | Widget, triggers, lead capture on a page | 7 | 8 | 2 |
| Meta / Instagram fit | Comment-to-DM, stories, Click-to-Message ads | 4 | 5 | 10 |
| Shopify / store actions | Order lookup, cart, native store hooks | 5 | 8 | 7 |
| Integrations | Helpdesks, CRM, Zapier/Make, social connectors | 7 | 7 | 5 |
| Total | 50 | 55 | 52 |
Tidio wins the website pair by five points. Almost all of that gap is the live inbox and Shopify. Chatbase takes AI-on-your-docs by three points. InstantDM loses the website card on purpose and wins the Meta row cleanly.

Snapshot: plans we priced
Pricing and plan limits below are as of August 2026, from each vendor's public pricing page.
| Chatbase | Tidio | InstantDM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, 50 credits/mo, 1 seat. Agent deleted after 14 days idle | $0, 50 billable human chats, 50 Lyro lifetime, 100 Flows visitors, 10 seats | 500 automations/mo, no card, plus 7-day full trial |
| First paid (annual) | Hobby $32/mo ($384/yr), 700 credits, 2 seats | Starter $24.17/mo, 100 billable chats, 50 Lyro one-off, 100 Flows visitors | Legend Pro $9.99/mo, unlimited contacts |
| Next grown-up tier | Standard $120/mo ($1,440/yr), 4,000 credits, helpdesk, voice, API | Growth from $49.17/mo, from 250 billable chats. Shopify actions start here | Trendsetter $24.99/mo, follow-ups, ads, API |
| Top self-serve | Pro $400/mo ($4,800/yr), 15,000 credits, 5 seats | Plus from $300/mo plus usage | Same two paid plans |
| Meter | Message credits. Extra $40 / 1,000 | Human chats + Lyro chats + Flows visitors | Flat contacts. Instagram still rate-limits |
| Branding removal | $1,188/year add-on | Add-on $16.67/mo on Growth; included on Plus | No widget branding problem. It is not a site bubble |
| Source | chatbase.co/pricing | tidio.com/pricing | instantdm.com/pricing |
Tidio also sells Lyro alone from $32.50/month billed annually, from 50 AI conversations, if you want the AI without replacing your helpdesk. Flows as a standalone starts at $24.17/month from 2,000 visitors reached. Chatbase does not split the product that way. You buy credits.
Chatbase: what we tested

Chatbase's product is simple to describe. You upload files, point it at URLs, pick a model, and embed a widget. Higher plans add a helpdesk, voice, telephony, outbound, API, Stripe, Zendesk, and social connectors including WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Those social rows sit on Standard and above in the compare table we read on 16 August 2026.
Setup is fast. We had a trained widget answering from a short help doc in one sitting. That is why it scored 8 on setup and 9 on AI-on-your-content. If your brief is "stop answering the same shipping question," Chatbase is the closer match.
The credit meter is the part people miss on the marketing page. Hobby is 700 message credits a month. That is fine for a demo and thin for a live store. Standard at $120/month billed annually is the first grown-up tier (4,000 credits). Extra credits are $40 per 1,000. Remove "Powered by Chatbase" for $1,188/year. Extra AI agents are $300 per agent per year. Free agents get deleted after 14 days idle.
We scored live inbox a 4 because Chatbase is not trying to be Tidio. You can hand off. You do not get Tidio's visitor list, live typing preview, and 10-seat floor as the default product. Meta fit scored 4 because Instagram and Messenger appear as integrations, not as comment-to-DM and story reply automation. Shopify scored 5. The connector exists on higher plans. Native store actions are not the product.
Pick Chatbase if the brief is train on our help center and sit on the site. Skip it if two people need to work a live queue all afternoon, or if last month's questions arrived as "LINK?" under a Reel.
Tidio: what we tested

Tidio sells three pieces you can stack: Customer Service (live chat and tickets), Lyro, and Flows. That is the product, and it is also the billing problem.
Starter at $24.17/month billed annually includes 100 billable conversations, 50 Lyro conversations as a one-off (not a monthly refresh), and 100 Flows visitors. Growth starts at $49.17 from 250 billable chats and is where native Shopify actions show up. Plus is $300/month plus usage. Lyro as its own product starts at $32.50/month from 50 AI conversations. We pulled all of that from tidio.com/pricing on 16 August 2026.
A billable conversation, in Tidio's own FAQ, is a live chat, ticket, email, or social thread that includes a message from a human agent. Visitor-only threads do not count. Lyro replies do not count as billable human chats. That is fair. It is still a cap. A busy week on Starter can burn 100 human replies.
The 50 Lyro chats on Starter are lifetime on that plan, not monthly. If you want Lyro to refresh, you buy a Lyro quota. Flows visitors are a third meter. A store that wants humans plus real Lyro volume plus a sales Flow pays Starter or Growth and Lyro, and maybe extra Flows. That is why pricing predictability scored 4.
We scored the live inbox 9. Visitor list, 10 seats on self-serve, tickets, operating hours, and (on Growth) assignment, macros, typing preview, and Shopify actions. Website chat marketing scored 8 because Flows exist to catch people on a page. Meta scored 5: Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp are listed as integrations. That is an inbox add-on. It is not InstantDM-style comment keyword funnels for ads.
Pick Tidio if the store needs a bubble and a person on shift. Skip it if you only wanted a doc-bot and no inbox, or if you thought Instagram on the pricing page meant comment-to-DM for Reels.

Three volume bills we modeled
Sticker price is a trap. We modeled three months from public rates. These are worked illustrations, not invoices. Your mix will differ.
Quiet month: a new site, light traffic
Assume 80 human chats, 40 AI answers, no ads.
- Chatbase: Hobby at $32/month billed annually covers 700 credits. You stay on Hobby. Branding stays unless you pay $1,188/year.
- Tidio: Starter at $24.17 covers 100 billable chats. The 50 lifetime Lyro chats cover this month and start to run out. Flows stay inside 100 visitors if you barely use them.
- InstantDM: Irrelevant if nobody is on Instagram. If comments exist, the free 500 automations or Legend Pro at $9.99 is enough.
Tidio is cheaper to open. Chatbase is cleaner if you will not staff an inbox.
Busy store: 400 human chats, 300 AI answers, some Flows
- Chatbase: 700 credits is gone. Standard at $120/month billed annually (4,000 credits) is the honest plan. If a "credit" maps close to one message, 700 would have failed in week one.
- Tidio: Growth from $49.17 for 250+ billable chats, plus a Lyro plan from $32.50 for a monthly AI quota, plus Flows if you exceed 100 visitors. A realistic stack is Growth + Lyro, often $80–$120/month before you climb the conversation sliders. Plus at $300 is the next cliff.
- InstantDM: Still $9.99 or $24.99 if this volume is Instagram comments and DMs. Instagram's own rate limits still apply. The bill does not climb with contact count.
At this volume the two website tools cost similar money and do different jobs. Chatbase is one meter. Tidio is three. InstantDM is a different inbox.
Peak week: a sale, a viral Reel, or a Meta ad
Website traffic and Instagram comments spike together. Teams buy one tool and hope. That is how you end up with Tidio staring at a comment section it cannot keyword-route, or Chatbase credits dying while DMs sit unread.
We scored that scenario by inbox, not by brand. Website spike: Tidio if humans must jump in, Chatbase if the answers are already in the docs. Instagram spike: InstantDM. A Reel that says "comment LINK" is not a Chatbase or Tidio job, no matter what the social integration row says.
Chat marketing: which inbox are you actually buying?
Chat marketing is selling inside a one-to-one thread. The tool question is just where the thread starts.
Chatbase and Tidio both buy the "chat marketing tools" SERP because people still picture a website bubble. Drift and Intercom taught that habit. If your traffic is a landing page, that picture is right. If your traffic is a Reel, a story, or a Click-to-Message ad, that picture is wrong.
We tested channel claims against the pricing pages, not against "Instagram" as a logo on a homepage.
| Job | Chatbase | Tidio | InstantDM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website widget from a help doc | Yes, this is the product | Yes, plus a human floor | No |
| Proactive chat on a product page | Widget, not Flows-style sales paths | Flows, scored higher | No |
| Staffed live queue | Helpdesk on Standard+, not the default | Yes, 10 seats on self-serve | Handoff inside Instagram DMs |
| Comment-to-DM on a Reel | No | No (inbox, not keyword funnels) | Yes |
| Story reply automation | No | No | Yes |
| Meta Click-to-Message ads | No | No | Trendsetter |
| Listed on Standard+ | Listed as an integration | No. Different stack |
If you want the wider live-chat grid, we already scored that separately in best live chat tools for lead generation. If you want the funnel shape, start with how to create a chat funnel.
AI: Chatbase, Lyro, and what InstantDM actually has
Chatbase calls its product an AI agent. That matches how it works: you ground it on sources, it answers, and on higher plans it can take approved actions and hand off. Tidio calls Lyro an AI agent too. Lyro reads your support content and answers. Flows are the older, rule-based cousin. Tidio's own pricing FAQ says Flows follow paths you draw. Lyro does not.
InstantDM's AI is AI comment replies. It is not a multi-turn AI agent. We will not dress it up. If you need a model that sits on a help center and resolves tickets, that is Chatbase or Lyro. If you need a keyword flow that DMs a link when someone comments "PRICE," that is InstantDM.
We scored Chatbase 9 and Tidio 6 on "AI on your content" because Chatbase is the whole product. Lyro is strong and separately metered. You can run Tidio for months with almost no Lyro and still have a useful inbox. You cannot run Chatbase without the credits.
Shopify, handoff, and the human floor
Tidio Growth lists native Shopify actions. That is a real reason stores pick it. We scored Shopify 8. Chatbase lists Shopify on the integrations compare table for paid plans. We scored 5. InstantDM has a Shopify app for checkout, cart recovery, and upsells inside Instagram DMs. We scored 7 for that job, not for a site widget.
Handoff is where teams get surprised. Chatbase can escalate into its helpdesk (Standard+) or a connected desk. Tidio is the desk. InstantDM hands a thread to a person inside Instagram with the lead fields still attached. Different floor, same idea: the bot should shut up when the question is a refund fight.

When Chatbase is the better buy
Buy Chatbase when most questions already have an answer in a doc, a Notion page, or a help center, and you do not want to staff a chat bubble. SaaS marketing sites, course libraries, and internal IT FAQs fit. Model choice is wide on paid plans (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, and others on the compare table). One credit meter is easier to explain to finance than Tidio's three sliders, until you hit Standard at $120/month.
Also buy Chatbase when you already have Zendesk or Intercom and want an AI layer in front, not a second inbox. Chatbase lists those desks on Standard+.
When Tidio is the better buy
Buy Tidio when a human has to see the visitor. Small ecommerce, service businesses with a receptionist who can glance at a phone app, stores that want Flows on the product page. Starter is cheaper than Chatbase Hobby. Ten seats on self-serve is generous. Shopify actions on Growth matter if agents refund and look up orders inside the chat.
Budget the three meters before you fall in love with the widget. Starter's 100 billable chats and 50 lifetime Lyro chats are a trial with a credit card, not a plan you grow on.
When InstantDM is the better buy

Buy InstantDM when the conversation starts on Instagram or Facebook. Comment-to-DM, story replies, in-DM lead capture, Meta ads on Trendsetter. Official Meta Business Partner, official Instagram Graph API. Legend Pro $9.99/month, unlimited contacts. Trendsetter $24.99. Free: 500 automations a month plus a 7-day full-feature trial (instantdm.com/pricing, August 2026).
It will not put a bubble on your site. If that is the only job, stop reading our column and buy Tidio or Chatbase.
For Messenger ads specifically, we already wrote the channel piece: Facebook Messenger advertising chat tools.
Who should buy which
- Help-center AI on a marketing site, no support team on chat → Chatbase Hobby, then Standard when 700 credits run out.
- Shopify store, humans plus some AI → Tidio Starter or Growth, add a paid Lyro quota when the 50 lifetime chats are gone.
- Already on Zendesk, want an AI front door → Chatbase Standard, or Tidio Lyro standalone from $32.50/month.
- Instagram / Facebook / Meta ads → InstantDM. Do not force this matchup.
- WhatsApp plus social flows in one builder → ManyChat, which is a different vs. See ManyChat alternatives.
- Need both a site widget and Instagram comment-to-DM → two tools. Tidio or Chatbase for the site. InstantDM for Meta. That is cheaper than pretending one logo covers both inboxes.
What we would buy with our own money
A docs-heavy SaaS site with no chat staff: Chatbase, and we would skip Hobby the month traffic is real. A Shopify store with two people who can answer: Tidio Growth, Lyro added only after we see which questions repeat. A creator or shop whose leads comment on Reels: InstantDM, no widget required.
We tested and scored this pair because Chatbase already publishes a Tidio comparison and Tidio already publishes a vs farm. The shopping query is real. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable, or treating either one as an Instagram ads tool.
ManyChat, Tidio, Chatbase, and the other names here are trademarks of their owners. InstantDM is not affiliated with them.
