TL;DR
Facebook Messenger advertising is a chat buy, not a landing-page buy. Ads Manager opens the thread. Something still has to answer it in seconds.
- Buy the conversation in Meta Ads Manager. Objective: messages. Destination: Messenger, Instagram, or both.
- Staff the conversation with InstantDM (Meta-only, flat $9.99 / $24.99) or ManyChat (if WhatsApp and SMS ride along).
- Say the chat is the offer. "Tap Send Message for the code" beats "Learn more."
This is InstantDM's blog. InstantDM is one of the two automation tools below. Weigh that accordingly.
Who this is for
- Media buyers running Click-to-Message or boosted Reels who come back to a full inbox.
- Shops whose organic comment-to-DM already works and want to put spend behind it.
- Teams asking "which Messenger ads tool?" and getting Ads Manager mixed up with the chatbot.
How we compared the tools
- Layer. Ad creation vs reply automation. Most lists mash them together.
- Destinations. Messenger, Instagram DM, both. Meta's own 2024 tests: multiple destinations cut cost per message about 9% and raised conversion about 11% (Meta, ads that click to message).
- What fires after the tap. Welcome message, keyword, flow, follow-up, comment on the sponsored post.
- Pricing at volume. Flat vs per contact. Public pages, August 2026.
- Official API. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the Instagram Graph API. Password bots were excluded.

Layer 1: the ad (Meta Ads Manager)
You create ads that click to Instagram chats or Messenger in Ads Manager or Business Suite. Meta's help center walks through the Messages objective and the Send Message CTA (create ads that click to Instagram Direct).
Meta's published figures on this format: 82% of businesses using ads that click to message report new customers; 71% of online adults would rather message a business after tapping a social ad.
Start with Engagement → Messages. Move to Leads once the chat collects an email or a booking you can send back as an event. Creative should look like a chat: "Message us for the code," not a generic brand spot.
Budget: $20–50/day is enough to read cost per message start. Judge the ad on conversations, not landing-page CTR.
Layer 2: who answers
| Tool | Best for | Handles after the tap | Pricing (Aug 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| InstantDM | Instagram + Facebook + ads, flat bill | Click-to-Message opener, ad comments, organic comments, story replies | Free 500 automations/mo; Legend Pro $9.99; ads on Trendsetter $24.99 (pricing) |
| ManyChat | Messenger + Instagram + WhatsApp + SMS | Flows on the inbound message | Per active contact after free (manychat.com/pricing) |
| Manual inbox | Tiny volume, business hours only | You type | Your time. Breaks at 2am and on a good ad. |
Ads automation on InstantDM (sponsored posts, boosted Reels, Click-to-Message) is a Trendsetter feature. Organic comment-to-DM is testable on the free plan.
ManyChat is the right second layer if WhatsApp has to share the same flows. It is the weaker Meta-only buy if you don't want per-contact metering when the ad works.
How to set up business chat on Instagram or Facebook
- Switch Instagram to Professional (Business or Creator).
- Connect a Facebook Page you admin. Two-minute walkthrough.
- Turn on messaging in Meta Business Suite so DMs, Messenger, and comments sit together.
- Connect InstantDM or ManyChat via Meta login. Never give a tool your password.
- Put a keyword on an organic post and test from a second account before you turn the ad on.
Social media chatbot habits that keep accounts intact
- Official APIs only. InstantDM authenticates through Facebook login.
- Train the audience: "Comment LINK" or "Tap Send Message for the code."
- The first DM must match the ad. A 20% off tap should not get a generic welcome.
- Public comment reply stays short ("sent you a DM"). The link stays private.
- Respect Instagram's 24-hour window for promo follow-ups. Compliant tools enforce this.
- Don't automate cold DMs to people who never talked to you.
- Read transcripts. The objections you keep seeing belong in the flow.
Messenger marketing that isn't just the ad
Organic comment-to-DM on the same offer as the ad keeps paid and unpaid traffic in one funnel. Build the funnel once, then point both a Reel and a Click-to-Message campaign at it.
Meta Click-to-Message details: InstantDM feature page and the ecommerce playbook.
What to measure
Cost per message start, not CTR. Flow completion. Chat-to-purchase or chat-to-booking. Lead capture rate if you collect email in-thread. Put UTM parameters on every link you send.

What we tested on the ad, not just the tool
A Click-to-Message ad without a written first DM is a lead tax. We ran the organic keyword first, then pointed a small Messages campaign at the same first message. The ad that reused the organic DM looked consistent. The ad that used a generic welcome wasted the tap.
InstantDM Trendsetter is the Meta ads seat in our stack ($24.99/month, August 2026). ManyChat can take the thread if WhatsApp is in the same campaign. Tidio and Chatbase do not buy this ad type. We scored that in Tidio vs ManyChat and Chatbase vs ManyChat.
Budget: $20–50/day is enough to read cost per message start. Kill the ad if the first DM is wrong. Do not scale a bad opener.
Meta's own Click-to-Message materials are the source for the 82% / 71% figures above. Treat them as Meta's claims, dated when you read them, not as InstantDM results.
Organic and paid on one funnel
The same LINK keyword should serve the Reel and the ad. Two first messages for one offer is how people think they clicked the wrong brand. Build once. Point both taps at it. That is the whole Messenger marketing habit that is not just the ad.
Next step
Create one Messages campaign at a modest daily budget. Put InstantDM on the reply if the destination is Instagram or Messenger. Free plan is 500 automations/month plus a 7-day full-feature trial. Broader map: what chat marketing is.
Ads Manager vs the chatbot, again, slower
People search "Messenger ads tools" and land on chatbot vendors. The ad is built in Meta. The vendor answers after the tap. If you do not understand that split you will buy ManyChat and still not know which objective to pick, or you will build a perfect InstantDM flow and never turn the campaign on.
Layer 1 is always Ads Manager. Engagement → Messages, or Leads once you have an event. Destination Instagram, Messenger, or both. Meta's 2024 multi-destination note (about 9% lower cost per message, about 11% higher conversion) is theirs. Recheck it. We are not Meta.
Layer 2 is InstantDM or ManyChat. InstantDM if the destination is Instagram and Facebook and you want $9.99 / $24.99 flat. Trendsetter for the ad comments and Click-to-Message opener. ManyChat if WhatsApp has to share the flow and you accept contacts as the meter.
Creative that belongs on a chat ad
Show the first DM in the creative if you can. "Tap message, I send the code" is the offer. A lifestyle video that never mentions the chat is a brand ad wearing a Send Message button. Those convert like brand ads, then you blame the chatbot.
Match the first DM to the line they tapped. 20% off in the ad means 20% off in bubble one. We tested a generic welcome on a code ad. People asked where the code was. That is a wasted conversation you paid for.
Comments on the sponsored post are part of the campaign. InstantDM can reply to those comments and DM the same offer. If you only automate organic posts, the ad comments sit there looking unanswered. That is a trust problem, not a CPM problem.
A test budget you can defend
$20–50 a day for a week. Kill if cost per message start is nonsense or if the first DM is wrong. Scale only the ad that uses the organic first message you already like. Do not scale to "see what the AI does." InstantDM ads are not an AI experiment. They are paid traffic into a written opener.
UTM every link. Otherwise you will not know if the booking came from the Reel or the ad, and next month's budget meeting will be folklore.
What breaks when the ad works
Manual inbox. You cannot type at 2am. Per-contact tools: the bill jumps because the ad did its job. InstantDM's price does not jump. Instagram's rate limits still apply. Queue and flood controls exist for that week. We do not promise unlimited past the platform.
ManyChat, Meta, Instagram, and Messenger are trademarks of their owners. InstantDM is not affiliated with them beyond official Meta Business Partner status, which is not an endorsement of this article.
Click-to-Message vs comment-on-ad vs boosted Reel
Click-to-Message: they tap Send Message, thread opens, your first DM must be the offer. Comment-on-ad: they comment on the sponsored post, you DM the same offer InstantDM already uses organically. Boosted Reel: comments behave like organic if messaging is on; still test. Three ways in. One first DM. That is the system.
If you write three first DMs, you will not know which ad failed. If you write one and the ad still fails, the creative or the audience is the problem, not the bot.
Events you should send back to Meta
Once the chat collects an email or a booking, send a lead or purchase event if you can. That is when Messages objective can become Leads or Sales with a straight face. UTMs on the link. InstantDM link tracking shows opens and geo. Use both. Do not optimize for message starts forever if you can optimize for booked calls.
We would not turn on a $200/day budget before that event exists. $20–50 is the test. The event is the permission to spend.
Compliance, short
Official API. Opt-in. No cold DMs. 24-hour window on promo follow-ups. InstantDM is built to stay inside those lines: DM Queue, Super Slow Mode, Rate Limit Controller, Flood Control. We do not write ban-proof. We do not write Meta-approved. We write official Meta Business Partner, official Instagram Graph API.
A one-page brief before you open Ads Manager
Offer in one sentence. First DM, written. Keyword if comments are in play. Destination: Instagram, Messenger, or both. Daily cap. Event you will fire when someone books or buys. Tool on layer 2: InstantDM Trendsetter or ManyChat. Test account ready. If any line is blank, you are not ready to spend. The blank line is the work, not the campaign settings.
We used that brief when we pointed a small Messages campaign at an organic first DM. The brief took longer than the ad set. That is the correct ratio.
Why Tidio and Chatbase keep showing up in this search
They rank on chat marketing. They do not run Click-to-Message. If a list of "Messenger ads tools" includes them without saying "website only," close it. Our vs posts exist so you can see the split. This post exists so you can build the ad and the reply as two layers.
What we put in the first DM on a Messages ad
The same words as the ad. If the creative said 20% off, bubble one is the code and the product URL. If it said book a call, bubble one is the calendar. We ran a "hey, thanks for messaging" opener on a code ad. People asked where the code was. That thread cost money. Write the first DM in the same doc as the ad copy. Paste it into InstantDM before you publish the campaign.
One button is enough. A carousel of eight products is not. They tapped because of one line. Keep that line.
Comments on the sponsored post get the same first DM. InstantDM can reply to those comments and open the thread. If you only automate organic posts, the ad comments sit there unanswered while you pay for the click. That looks like a dead shop. It is a setup miss, not a CPM miss.
Audience and placement, week one
Use an audience you already trust from feed ads. The bot is the new variable. Do not also invent a cold stack. Watch Instagram and Messenger destinations as separate stories even if Meta lets you blend them. Their 2024 multi-destination note (about 9% lower cost per message, about 11% higher conversion) is Meta's number. Recheck it. We still split when the first DM is Instagram-native, like a comment keyword, versus a longer Messenger thread.
Ignore most of the optimization toggles until the first DM is right. A tight audience into a generic welcome is still a wasted tap.
When to kill the ad vs when to change the bot
Kill the ad if people tap and then go quiet after a correct first DM. The offer or the audience is wrong. Change the bot if they tap and then ask where the code is. The first message failed. Change the destination if Instagram threads convert and Messenger does not, or the reverse. Do not change all three in one afternoon.
We would rather run seven days at $20–50 than three days of panic edits. Ads Manager needs a sample. InstantDM does not. You can fix the first DM in minutes. Give the ad the week.
Messenger destination vs Instagram destination
Instagram: they already live in comments and DMs. InstantDM keyword on the sponsored post plus the Click-to-Message opener. Messenger: longer threads, closer to a website chat that happens to sit in Facebook. ManyChat has more history there. InstantDM still answers Messenger if the Page is connected. Pick the destination that matches where you already reply well by hand. Do not pick Messenger because an old post said it was cheaper. Check your cost per started conversation after seven days.
If you sell on Reels, start with Instagram. If your buyers hang out in Facebook groups, start with Messenger. Two destinations on day one splits a small budget into two stories you cannot read.
The 24-hour window on a paid thread
They tapped. The clock started. Promo follow-ups belong inside Meta's messaging window. InstantDM follow-ups on Trendsetter ($24.99/month, August 2026, instantdm.com/pricing) are one later ping, then stop. That is on purpose. A paid conversation that becomes a three-day drip is how people block you and how you train the pixel on annoyed users.
If they booked or bought, stop talking unless they write back. If they opened the link and went quiet, one follow-up is enough. The ad already paid to start the thread. Do not spend their patience too.
What we would not run as a chat ad
A brand film with Send Message slapped on. A lead form wearing a chat button. A "message us" ad with no written first DM. A campaign whose comments are not automated. A $200/day budget before a lead or purchase event exists. Those are feed ads or form ads. Run them that way. A chat ad earns the name when the creative shows the chat and the bot delivers the line.
Also: password tools and unofficial APIs. InstantDM is built on the official Instagram Graph API. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner. That is not an endorsement of this article. We do not write Meta-approved. We do not write ban-proof. Cold DMs from a scraped list are not this post.
Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog. We sell the layer-2 reply on Instagram and Facebook. Ads Manager is still Meta's product. ManyChat is still the pick if WhatsApp has to share the same flow and you have modeled contacts.
