You typed Chatbase vs ManyChat because both get called AI chat platforms and they do different jobs. Chatbase is an AI you train on files and URLs. ManyChat is Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and SMS automation. We tested and scored them on the same rubric. Chatbase already lists ManyChat in Instagram and WhatsApp roundups. They never published this pair as a scored vs. We did.
Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog. InstantDM is the Meta row when you want official-API comment-to-DM without ManyChat's contact meter. Prices from public pages, 16 August 2026.
TL;DR
- Chatbase scored 50 / 80 on a website-AI card. Buy it to train on a help center and embed a widget. Credits jump at volume.
- ManyChat scored 45 / 80 on that card, 8 / 10 on social campaigns. Buy it for comment-to-DM plus WhatsApp and SMS. You pay per active contact.
- InstantDM scored 52 / 80 here and 10 / 10 on Meta. Buy it when Instagram and Facebook are the whole campaign and you want $9.99 flat.
| Chatbase | ManyChat | InstantDM (Meta only) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our score | 50 / 80 | 45 / 80 website / 8 social | 52 / 80 / 10 on Meta |
| Buy it for | Docs-trained AI on a site | Social + WhatsApp + SMS flows | Instagram, Facebook, Meta ads |
| Skip it if | The campaign is a Reel comment | You only needed a knowledge bot | You need WhatsApp or a site widget |
| Paid from | Hobby $32/mo annual, 700 credits | Contact tiers after 25 free | Legend Pro $9.99/mo flat |
How we tested and scored
Same week as Chatbase vs Tidio and Tidio vs ManyChat, 16 August 2026.
- Walked Chatbase widget setup and a ManyChat automation.
- Read chatbase.co/pricing and manychat.com/pricing.
- Mapped message credits versus active contacts.
- Checked Instagram rows on those pages.
- Scored eight criteria. Modeled three bills.
No invented accuracy percentage. Hero is both logos with VS in the middle. Screenshots are the homepages from that day.
The scorecard we used
| Criterion | What we tested | Chatbase | ManyChat | InstantDM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setup to first reply | Signup to a working bot or flow | 8 | 7 | 8 |
| AI on your content | Docs, URLs, stay on-source | 9 | 5 | 5 |
| Live human inbox | Visitor list, seats, takeover | 4 | 6 | 6 |
| Pricing predictability | Forecast next month from the public page | 6 | 4 | 9 |
| Website chat marketing | Widget on a landing page | 7 | 2 | 2 |
| Meta / Instagram fit | Comment-to-DM, stories, ads | 4 | 8 | 10 |
| Shopify / store actions | Order context inside the chat | 5 | 5 | 7 |
| Extra channels | WhatsApp, SMS, helpdesks | 7 | 8 | 5 |
| Total | 50 | 45 | 52 |
Chatbase takes AI-on-docs by four points. ManyChat takes Instagram and extra channels. InstantDM takes pricing and Meta ads. Averaging them into "best AI chat platform" is how you buy a widget for a Reel.
Criterion notes, so the table is not a vibe. Setup: Chatbase widget is faster than a first ManyChat flow if you already have a PDF. AI: Chatbase 9 because the product is grounding; ManyChat 5 because AI is a layer on social flows; InstantDM 5 for comment replies. Inbox: Chatbase 4, ManyChat 6, InstantDM 6. Predictability: Chatbase 6 (one meter, steep Standard jump), ManyChat 4 (contacts), InstantDM 9. Website: Chatbase 7, others 2. Meta: InstantDM 10, ManyChat 8, Chatbase 4. Shopify: InstantDM 7 for DM checkout flows, both others 5. Extra channels: ManyChat 8, Chatbase 7 for helpdesk connectors, InstantDM 5.
Same eight criteria as the Tidio pairs. If a vendor blog uses a different card, they are usually scoring the thing they sell.
Chatbase: what we tested

Upload files, scrape a site, pick a model, embed a widget. Hobby $32/month billed annually, 700 message credits, 2 seats. Standard $120/month, 4,000 credits, helpdesk, voice, API, Stripe, Zendesk. Pro $400, 15,000 credits. Extra credits $40 / 1,000. Remove "Powered by Chatbase" for $1,188/year. Extra agents $300 per agent per year. Free agents deleted after 14 days idle. WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram sit on Standard+ in the compare table.
Setup scored 8. AI-on-content scored 9. Live inbox scored 4 because Chatbase is not Tidio. Meta scored 4 because a connector is not a giveaway flow.
Pick Chatbase if the brief is train on our help center. Skip it if the brief is comment COURSE on a Reel.
ManyChat: what we tested

Comment-to-DM, story replies, broadcasts, tags, WhatsApp, SMS. That is the product. Chatbase's Instagram row is not. ManyChat AI is a marketing layer on those flows, not a help-center agent. Pricing is active contacts. Free 25. Paid tiers climb with the list. WhatsApp from higher plans. Confirm on the official page before you launch a viral post. We scored pricing 4 for the same reason we score Tidio 4: the meter is the product.
Pick ManyChat if WhatsApp and Instagram share one funnel. Skip it if you wanted a docs bot, or you only need Meta and want a flat bill.
The Meta third path

InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the official Instagram Graph API. Comment-to-DM, story replies, in-DM lead capture, ads on Trendsetter. $9.99 or $24.99 flat. 500 automations free plus a 7-day trial. No WhatsApp. No Chatbase-style widget. AI comment replies, not an AI agent.
If last month's questions arrived as comments, Chatbase does not see them. ManyChat does, then invoices the contacts. InstantDM sees them and the bill stays put.

What we actually ran as test campaigns
Four briefs. Same rule as the other vs posts: if the product cannot accept the brief, we do not invent a Zapier story and call it native.
Brief A: upload a 20-page help doc, embed a widget, ask shipping and refund questions. Chatbase is the product. ManyChat is the wrong aisle. InstantDM is idle.
Brief B: comment PRICE on a Reel, DM the price list, collect an email. ManyChat and InstantDM. Chatbase's Instagram connector on Standard+ does not become this flow. We scored Meta 4 for Chatbase for that reason.
Brief C: WhatsApp broadcast to last month's buyers. ManyChat. Chatbase and InstantDM do not replace that.
Brief D: site widget plus Instagram ads in the same week. Two tools. Chatbase on the site. InstantDM on the ads. ManyChat only if WhatsApp is also in the week and you accept contacts as the meter.
Chatbase vs ManyChat is a bad question if you wanted one winner. It is a good question if you are about to buy Chatbase because an overview said "AI chatbot" and your traffic is comments.
Credits versus contacts, in English
Chatbase sells message credits. Hobby is 700 a month. A real visitor who asks three follow-ups spends more than one credit. We did not pretend 700 equals 700 unique people. Standard at $120 is the first grown-up plan. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000. That is one meter. You can model it.
ManyChat sells active contacts. Anyone who sends or receives a message that month counts. A giveaway that works is the thing that raises the invoice. That is the opposite of how marketers want success to feel. We scored both 6 and 4 on predictability. InstantDM scored 9 because the number on the pricing page is the number on the card, $9.99 or $24.99.
Finance teams should not compare Hobby $32 to ManyChat Pro $29 and call them similar. One is 700 credits. The other is a contact ceiling. Different units.
Three volume bills we modeled
Worked illustrations, not invoices.
Help-center widget, 600 AI answers, no social
Chatbase Hobby's 700 credits may hold. One busy week dumps you on Standard at $120. ManyChat is the wrong cart. InstantDM is idle.
Giveaway, 5,000 Instagram commenters
Chatbase does not run it. ManyChat treats them as active contacts. InstantDM stays $9.99. Instagram still rate-limits everyone.
Site FAQ plus Instagram ads
Two tools. Chatbase on the site. InstantDM on ads. ManyChat only if WhatsApp is in the mix and you accept the contact meter.
Setup, handoff, and what breaks first
Chatbase setup is upload, scrape, embed. We had a doc-trained widget in one sitting. Handoff exists. A visitor list like Tidio does not. What breaks first is Hobby's 700 credits, then the $1,188 branding add-on if you care how the bubble looks. Free agents disappearing after 14 days idle is a rude surprise if you treat Free as a real plan.
ManyChat setup is Meta connect, flow, keyword. Handoff is the social inbox. What breaks first is the contact tier after a good week. The automation does not stop. The plan does.
InstantDM setup is OAuth, keyword, DM. Handoff stays in Instagram. What breaks first is Instagram rate limits. The price does not move.

| Click-to-Message ads | No | Yes | Trendsetter |

What Chatbase's listicles leave out
Chatbase's Instagram chatbots list names Chatbase, ManyChat, Botpress, Freshchat, and UChat. InstantDM is not on it. That list is written to put Chatbase in a social roundup. Instagram as an integration is not Instagram as a campaign engine. We put InstantDM in the third column so the social job has a specialist that bills flat.
If you landed here from that list, keep Chatbase for the site. Do not keep it as your comment-to-DM plan.
What you will regret
Regret Chatbase if you thought Standard's Instagram row was a giveaway tool. Regret ManyChat if you wanted a knowledge bot or you ignored contacts. Regret InstantDM if you needed WhatsApp or a widget. Regret one tool if you have both a docs site and a Reel calendar.
When Chatbase is the better buy
SaaS marketing site, course library, internal FAQ. No chat staff. Model choice on paid plans. One credit meter is easier to explain than ManyChat contacts, until Standard.
When ManyChat is the better buy
Social plus WhatsApp plus SMS. You already think in tags. You will watch the contact invoice.
When InstantDM is the better buy
Meta only. Official API. Flat $9.99. Ads on Trendsetter.
Who should buy which
- Docs AI on a site → Chatbase.
- IG + WhatsApp + SMS → ManyChat.
- IG + Facebook + ads, flat → InstantDM.
- Store widget + humans → Tidio, see Tidio vs ManyChat.
- Site + comments → Chatbase plus InstantDM.
What we would buy with our own money
A docs-heavy site: Chatbase, skip Hobby once traffic is real. A WhatsApp-heavy brand: ManyChat. A Reel-first creator: InstantDM. Chatbase vs ManyChat is a real shopping query because both get called chatbots. They should not share a credit card unless you have two inboxes.
Chatbase and ManyChat are trademarks of their owners. InstantDM is not affiliated with them.
A week on Chatbase, then a week on ManyChat
Monday on Chatbase you upload the help doc and scrape the site. Tuesday the widget answers shipping. Wednesday someone asks a refund question that needs a human and you feel the inbox score of 4. Thursday credits look fine. Friday they do not, and Standard is $120. That week is correct if the site is the campaign. It is the wrong week if comments are the campaign.
Monday on ManyChat you connect Instagram. Tuesday PRICE as a comment sends the list. Wednesday you want WhatsApp and check the plan. Thursday the Reel works. Friday contacts are the meeting. That week is correct if social is the campaign. It is the wrong week if you needed a knowledge bot.
Monday on InstantDM you connect Meta. Tuesday the same PRICE comment sends the list. Wednesday stories. Thursday ads on Trendsetter. Friday $9.99 or $24.99. No WhatsApp. No widget. That week is correct if Meta is the campaign.
People search Chatbase vs ManyChat because both words sit next to "AI chat." After a week on each, the search looks like a category error. We still wrote the post because the query exists and Chatbase keeps putting ManyChat in listicles without a scored pair. Now there is one.
FAQ we kept getting while scoring
Can one subscription do both a help-center widget and comment-to-DM well? Not in this pair. Chatbase will not become ManyChat. ManyChat will not become Chatbase. InstantDM will not become either. Two inboxes, two bills, still often cheaper than forcing Standard plus a contact overage plus a tool that does not fire.
Is ManyChat "more AI" because the homepage says AI? No. Chatbase is the AI-on-docs product. ManyChat is the social campaign product with AI on top. InstantDM's AI is comment replies. We scored 9 / 5 / 5 and we will not inflate InstantDM to win a column we did not earn.
Is Chatbase cheaper at 10,000 Instagram contacts? The question is the mistake. Chatbase does not bill those contacts because it does not run that campaign. Compare InstantDM $9.99 to ManyChat's tier at that size. Leave Chatbase out of that math.
Should you migrate off ManyChat onto Chatbase? Only if you are also leaving social campaigns. A migration that keeps the Reel calendar and drops comment-to-DM is a downgrade dressed as AI.
Should you migrate off Chatbase onto ManyChat? Only if the widget was the wrong buy. Do not throw away a working help-center bot to get Instagram. Add InstantDM or ManyChat beside it.
One more billing example so the units stick. Ten thousand people comment on a launch. ManyChat counts a large share as active contacts. InstantDM is still $9.99 or $24.99. Chatbase Hobby is still 700 credits on a widget that never saw the comments. If your spreadsheet puts those three prices in one column, the spreadsheet is the bug.
We tested and scored this pair because listicles keep lining Chatbase next to ManyChat under "AI chatbots." Lined up on a campaign brief, they barely overlap. That is the finding. The scores are how we wrote it down. If you only remember one line: Chatbase is the docs widget, ManyChat is the social campaign, InstantDM is the flat Meta campaign. Do not make them share a job they did not earn. If you need both jobs, you need both tools, or InstantDM plus Chatbase, not a single logo that pretends. We would rather you pay two honest bills than one confused one. That is also why the platforms list exists: it is the aisle, and these vs posts are the shelf talkers. Read the aisle if you have not named the inbox yet. Read this pair only after you have named that inbox in writing, on a brief, not in a logo mood board.
