You typed Chatbase vs Chatfuel because Chatbase already ranks a page on that pair and both get sold as AI chat. They are not the same inbox. Chatbase is an AI you train on docs and put on a site. Chatfuel is Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp automation with a free Light plan and an AI PRO upgrade. We tested and scored them on the same rubric. Chatbase's post will tell you to stay on Chatbase. We will tell you which campaign you actually run.

Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog. InstantDM is the Meta row when you want official-API comment-to-DM at $9.99 flat and you do not need WhatsApp. Prices from public pages, 16 August 2026.

TL;DR

  • Chatbase scored 50 / 80 on a website-AI card. Buy it to train on a help center. Credits jump at volume.
  • Chatfuel scored 50 / 80 on that card if you count social, 8 / 10 on Meta. Buy Light for free Meta and WhatsApp automations. Buy AI PRO at $49/month yearly when you want the AI layer.
  • InstantDM scored 52 / 80 here and 10 / 10 on Meta. Buy it when Instagram and Facebook are the whole job and you want a flat bill without WhatsApp.

How we tested and scored

Same week as the other pairs, 16 August 2026. We walked both setups, read chatbase.co/pricing and chatfuel.com/pricing, opened Chatbase's existing Chatfuel vs Chatbase post, captured homepages, scored eight criteria, and modeled three bills. No invented accuracy percentage. Hero is both logos with VS in the middle.

The scorecard we used

Criterion What we tested Chatbase Chatfuel InstantDM
Setup to first reply Signup to a working bot or flow 8 7 8
AI on your content Docs, knowledge base, stay on-source 9 7 5
Live human inbox Shared inbox, seats, takeover 4 7 6
Pricing predictability Forecast next month from the public page 6 6 9
Website chat marketing Widget on a landing page 7 3 2
Meta / Instagram fit Comment-to-DM, stories, ads 4 8 10
Shopify / store actions Store hooks inside the chat 5 5 7
Extra channels WhatsApp, helpdesks, API 7 7 5
Total 50 50 52

They tie on 50 because they win opposite columns. Chatbase takes docs AI and the website widget. Chatfuel takes Meta and a usable shared inbox. InstantDM wins the card on pricing plus Instagram ads. Chatbase's own vs post treats this as a chatbot-builder fight. For a marketer, it is an inbox fight.

Why Chatfuel's AI scored 7 and not 9: AI PRO's knowledge base is real, and we did not ignore it. Chatbase still scored 9 because grounding on docs is the whole company, not an upgrade SKU. Why Chatfuel inbox scored 7: Light includes a shared inbox you can staff. Chatbase needs Standard before the helpdesk feels like a floor. Why InstantDM Meta scored 10 and Chatfuel 8: both run comment-to-DM; InstantDM adds ads on Trendsetter, official Business Partner status as we state it, and a bill that does not care how many people commented. Chatfuel Light is freer on WhatsApp. Different win.

Same eight criteria as Chatbase vs Tidio and Chatbase vs ManyChat.

Chatbase: what we tested

Chatbase homepage screenshot, August 2026

Hobby $32/month billed annually, 700 credits. Standard $120, 4,000 credits, helpdesk, voice, API. Pro $400, 15,000. Extra $40 / 1,000 credits. Branding $1,188/year. Instagram and Messenger on Standard+. Free agents deleted after 14 days idle. We scored AI 9 and Meta 4. Full pair with Tidio: Chatbase vs Tidio 2026.

Pick Chatbase if the campaign is a help-center widget. Skip it if the campaign is comment-to-DM.

Chatfuel: what we tested

Chatfuel homepage screenshot, August 2026

Light is free: Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp automations, shared inbox, flow builder, templates, contact management. No credit card. AI PRO is $49/month billed yearly (they advertise 29% off monthly) and adds an AI sales manager, AI knowledge base, broadcasts, re-engagement, and qualification funnels. Usage limits live on limits.chatfuel.com. They call themselves an official Meta Partner and a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider.

We scored Meta 8, inbox 7, website 3, pricing 6. Better predictability than ManyChat contacts. Less predictable than InstantDM's flat $9.99 because AI PRO and limits still move.

Chatfuel also publishes ManyChat alternatives and Tidio alternatives. They want this SERP. We scored them as the closer ManyChat-shaped Meta tool, not as a Chatbase clone.

Pick Chatfuel if you want Meta plus WhatsApp without a contact meter. Skip it if you only need Instagram and Facebook and want $9.99 flat.

The Meta third path

InstantDM homepage screenshot, August 2026

InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the official Instagram Graph API. Comment-to-DM, story replies, in-DM lead capture, ads on Trendsetter. Legend Pro $9.99, Trendsetter $24.99, 500 free automations plus a 7-day trial. No WhatsApp. AI comment replies, not an AI agent.

Chatfuel Light is the free social test. InstantDM is the flat paid Meta specialist. Chatbase is neither.

What we actually ran as test campaigns

Four briefs again. Chatbase already wrote Chatfuel vs Chatbase as a builder comparison. We ran campaigns.

Brief A: train on a help center, embed on /docs. Chatbase. Chatfuel AI PRO can add a knowledge base, but you are still buying a social platform. InstantDM: no.

Brief B: Instagram + WhatsApp welcome flow, free to start. Chatfuel Light. Chatbase has no free social flow. InstantDM covers Instagram only, 500 automations free.

Brief C: comment-to-DM plus a Meta ad. Chatfuel or InstantDM. Chatbase: no.

Brief D: Zendesk already exists, add an AI front door on the site. Chatbase Standard lists Zendesk. Chatfuel is the wrong aisle.

If your tab history is Chatbase's Chatfuel post, ask which brief you are in before you believe their frame.

Free versus cheap versus flat

Chatfuel Light is the most honest free social plan in this set: Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp automations, inbox, templates, no card. Chatbase Free is 50 credits and the agent is deleted after 14 days idle. InstantDM free is 500 automations a month plus a 7-day full trial. ManyChat free is 25 contacts.

AI PRO at $49/month billed yearly is cheaper than Chatbase Standard at $120 if the job is social. It is more expensive than InstantDM Trendsetter at $24.99 if the job is Meta ads and you do not need WhatsApp. Hobby at $32 is cheaper than AI PRO for a tiny site widget. Units differ. We scored pricing 6 / 6 / 9 for that reason, not because one sticker is smaller.

Three volume bills we modeled

Worked illustrations, not invoices.

Help site, 800 AI answers a month

Chatbase leaves Hobby. Standard $120. Chatfuel is the wrong cart unless those answers are WhatsApp threads on AI PRO. InstantDM is idle.

Instagram plus WhatsApp, mid volume

Chatfuel Light, then AI PRO at $49 yearly if you want the AI layer. Chatbase Standard+ if you insist on their Instagram connector, which we would not. InstantDM covers Instagram only. Add Chatfuel or ManyChat if WhatsApp is real.

Meta ads, comment-to-DM, no WhatsApp

InstantDM Trendsetter $24.99. Chatfuel Light can run the organic half. Chatbase does not run the ad.

Chatbase's own Chatfuel post versus what we scored

Chatbase.co/blog/chatfuel frames Chatfuel as a visual flow builder and Chatbase as the AI optimization play. That is fair for a website bot. It underplays Chatfuel Light being free on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. If your traffic is social, Chatbase is asking you to buy the wrong aisle. We scored both aisles.

Setup, handoff, and what breaks first

Chatbase: upload, scrape, embed. Handoff into helpdesk on Standard+. Breaks first on credits and idle deletion on Free.

Chatfuel: connect Meta, pick a template, publish. Shared inbox is on Light. Breaks first when you need broadcasts and AI and Light is no longer enough, so you pay AI PRO. Limits are on a second page. Read that page.

InstantDM: OAuth, keyword, DM. Breaks first on Instagram rate limits, not on a contact invoice.

Channel by channel

Job Chatbase Chatfuel InstantDM
Help-center widget Yes Not the product No
Comment-to-DM No Yes Yes
Story replies No Yes Yes
Click-to-Message ads No Yes Trendsetter
WhatsApp Standard+ Yes, including Light No
Free social plan worth using No Light 500 automations/mo
Shared social inbox Helpdesk on Standard+ Yes on Light Handoff in DMs
Official Meta status they claim Integration partners Meta Partner + WhatsApp BSP Meta Business Partner

Chatfuel Light including WhatsApp is the structural difference from InstantDM and from ManyChat's "WhatsApp starts on Pro" story. If WhatsApp is required on day one and you do not want to pay, Chatfuel Light is the test we would run first.

What you will regret

Regret Chatbase if you bought Hobby to run Instagram ads. Regret Chatfuel if you needed a docs widget and no social. Regret InstantDM if you needed WhatsApp. Regret AI PRO on month one if Light already sends the link. Pay for AI when the flow is not enough, not because the homepage said AI coworker.

When Chatbase is the better buy

Docs, URLs, a widget, no social campaign. You will live with credits.

When Chatfuel is the better buy

Meta plus WhatsApp. Start on Light. Pay AI PRO when the free automations are not enough. Closer to ManyChat than to Chatbase.

When InstantDM is the better buy

Instagram and Facebook only. Official API. Flat $9.99. Ads on Trendsetter.

Who should buy which

  • Docs AI on a site → Chatbase.
  • IG + Facebook + WhatsApp → Chatfuel.
  • IG + Facebook + ads, flat → InstantDM.
  • IG + WhatsApp + SMS + more channels → ManyChat, see Chatbase vs ManyChat.
  • Store widget → Tidio, see Tidio vs ManyChat.

What we would buy with our own money

A help-center widget: Chatbase Standard when Hobby dies. A WhatsApp plus Instagram shop: Chatfuel Light, AI PRO if the AI layer earns it. A Reel and ads account with no WhatsApp: InstantDM. Chatbase vs Chatfuel is a real query because Chatbase published it. Treat it as website AI versus Meta automation, not as two skins of the same bot.

Chatbase and Chatfuel are trademarks of their owners. InstantDM is not affiliated with them.

A week on Chatbase, then a week on Chatfuel

Monday on Chatbase: docs, scrape, widget. Tuesday: shipping answers. Wednesday: you want Instagram comment-to-DM and find a connector, not a keyword. Thursday: credits. Friday: Standard. Correct week for a help site. Wrong week for a Reel.

Monday on Chatfuel: Light, no card, Instagram and WhatsApp. Tuesday: a welcome flow. Wednesday: the shared inbox gets a human. Thursday: you want broadcasts and AI. Friday: AI PRO at $49 yearly. Correct week for social plus WhatsApp. Wrong week for a docs widget.

Monday on InstantDM: OAuth, keyword. Tuesday: comments. Wednesday: stories. Thursday: ads. Friday: $9.99. No WhatsApp. Correct week for Meta-only. Wrong week for WhatsApp-first.

Chatbase published Chatfuel vs Chatbase so they could own the query. We tested and scored the same query from the campaign side. If you only needed their frame, their post is fine. If you needed to know who runs a comment and who runs a PDF, this one is the card.

FAQ we kept getting while scoring

Is Chatfuel Light enough to skip InstantDM? If you need WhatsApp on day one, yes, start there. If you need ads, official Business Partner framing, and a bill that does not care how many people commented, InstantDM is still the Meta specialist we scored 10 on that column.

Is AI PRO a Chatbase killer? No. AI PRO makes Chatfuel better at social AI. It does not make Chatfuel a docs-first website platform. Chatbase Standard still wins Brief A.

Is Chatbase Hobby a Chatfuel killer? No. Hobby is 700 credits on a widget. It does not send a comment-to-DM. Different aisle.

Which Meta claim should you trust? InstantDM: official Meta Business Partner, official Instagram Graph API. Chatfuel: official Meta Partner and WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, in their words on the pricing page. We do not write "Meta-approved." We do not write that Meta endorses this article.

Can you run Chatfuel Light and InstantDM together? Yes, if WhatsApp is on Chatfuel and Instagram ads are on InstantDM. Two tools again. Still cleaner than one tool that is wrong on half the funnel.

Should you switch from Chatfuel to Chatbase because Chatbase wrote the vs? Only if the campaign moved to a help center. Their post is first-party, same as this one. Weigh both. Then buy the inbox.

Billing example, same launch as the other posts. Ten thousand commenters. Chatfuel Light may hold if you stay inside their published limits. AI PRO is $49/month yearly if you need the AI layer. InstantDM is $9.99 or $24.99. Chatbase still does not run the comments. Putting Hobby $32 next to Light $0 and calling Chatbase "more expensive social AI" is the same unit error.

We tested and scored Chatbase vs Chatfuel because they already ranked the URL. We kept InstantDM in the third column so Meta-only teams are not forced into WhatsApp they do not use, or into a widget they do not need. That is the whole post. Chatbase for the PDF. Chatfuel for Meta plus WhatsApp, Light then AI PRO. InstantDM for Instagram and Facebook at $9.99 flat. Pick the brief first. The logo comes second. If the brief is mixed, the stack is mixed. We tested and scored so you can stop hoping one homepage covers a Reel, a PDF, and WhatsApp at once. Chatbase's Chatfuel post is still worth reading for builder features. Read it after this one, not instead of it, and keep the first-party labels on both.

Last check on status language. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner. Chatfuel says official Meta Partner and WhatsApp BSP on pricing. Chatbase lists social connectors. Those are not the same sentence. We kept them apart on purpose, the same way we keep "AI comment replies" off InstantDM's score for multi-turn agents. If a sales deck collapses those sentences, close the deck and open the pricing pages we linked. The pages are dated August 2026 in this post for a reason: vendors change plans, and we do not want last year's sticker sitting next to this year's score. Recheck both pricing URLs before you buy.
