The best Instagram chatbot in August 2026 depends on which of five jobs you're hiring it for. Comment-to-DM at a flat price: InstantDM. Funnels that also run on WhatsApp or SMS: ManyChat. A support inbox with live chat: Tidio. An AI agent trained on your own documents: Chatbase, or Chatfuel if you want it free to start. Booking sales calls from DMs: SetSmart. Inrō sits between them as a cheap AI-first option priced in euros.
We compared seven tools on DM triggers, whether the AI can hold a conversation, channel coverage, free plans, and what the bill does when a Reel takes off. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page this month. For the wider map, start at our Instagram automation hub; to build one yourself, read how to build an Instagram bot.
- InstantDM — best for comment-to-DM at a flat price, free plan (500 automations/month) or $9.99/mo Legend Pro

- Chatfuel — best free multi-channel builder with an AI upgrade, free Light plan, then $49/mo AI PRO

Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog, so weigh our take accordingly. Every competitor fact here links to its source, and the verdicts tell you when a rival is the better pick. InstantDM does not win every row below, and it should not.

What is an Instagram chatbot, and what can it not do?
An Instagram chatbot is software connected to your Instagram Business or Creator account through Meta's Instagram Messaging API. It sends a DM when a person does something: comments on a post, replies to a Story, or messages you. It never logs in as you; you authorise it once and Meta issues it a token.
Rule-based bots match a trigger to a fixed reply: comment "LINK", get the link. AI bots write an answer from a knowledge base or a prompt. Most tools here do both.
What it cannot do matters more, because the sales pages skip it. A chatbot on the official API cannot:
- Send the first message to someone who has never interacted with you. Meta's messaging APIs only open a conversation the person started (Messenger Platform policy). Tools that promise cold DMs log in with your password instead, and that is a Terms of Use problem.
- Send a second DM to a commenter who ignored the first.
- Reply to a comment older than 7 days.
- Send promotional messages more than 24 hours after the person's last message.
- Run on a personal account.
- Like, follow, or comment on other people's posts for you. Those are growth bots, and Instagram treats them as spam.
Our explainer on whether Instagram automation is allowed draws the line with Meta's own policy text.
How did we compare these seven Instagram chatbots?
On six questions, with every price taken from the vendor's own pricing page on August 27 and 28, 2026. We build InstantDM, so we wrote the criteria first and scored second.
- Does a comment on a post or Reel trigger a DM, with a keyword filter?
- Does a Story reply trigger a DM?
- Can the AI hold a conversation, or does it only draft replies?
- Does it cover WhatsApp?
- Is there a free plan, and what runs out first?
- What is the entry price, and what does the bill scale on?
We kept tools that appear in 2026 Instagram chatbot comparisons and have a public pricing page, and left out anything that posts comments for you on other accounts. Those aren't chatbots.
Which Instagram chatbot is best for comment-to-DM, AI conversations, omnichannel, support, or free?
Comment-to-DM: InstantDM, ManyChat, Chatfuel and Inrō, with InstantDM the cheapest at $9.99/mo flat. AI conversations: Chatbase and SetSmart. Omnichannel: ManyChat. Support inbox: Tidio. Free: Chatfuel Light has the widest channel coverage, InstantDM's 500 automations a month is the roomiest comment-to-DM cap, and ManyChat's 25 contacts is the tightest.
Prices verified August 2026 on each vendor's public pricing page. Vendors change plans without notice, so check their current pricing before you decide.
| Tool | Best for | Comment-to-DM | Story replies | AI replies | Free plan | Starting price (verified Aug 2026) | Meta partner status as stated on their own site | |

The table hides one thing: the starting price isn't what you pay after a good month. ManyChat and Inrō bill by active contacts, Tidio by conversations, Chatbase and SetSmart by AI messages. Only InstantDM and Chatfuel stay flat.
What does Meta allow an Instagram chatbot to do?
Five numbers and two account rules, all from Meta's own documentation, govern every tool on this page and explain most "why isn't my bot working" tickets.
- One message per comment. "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented" (Private Replies documentation).
- 7 days. "The message must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created for comments on a post, ads post, or reel." Same page.
- Live only during the broadcast. "Private replies on Instagram Live Story comments can only be sent during the live broadcast."
- 24 hours. "Only when the Instagram user responds to the private message can you continue the conversation within the 24-hour messaging window." The platform policy adds that "Messages sent within the 24-hour window may contain promotional content" and that a Human Agent tag lets a person reply manually for up to 7 days (Messenger Platform policy).
- 30 seconds. "Automated bots must respond to user input within 30 seconds." Same policy page.
- Inbox or Request folder. "This reply will be delivered to the Instagram user's Inbox folder, if the Instagram user follows the Instagram professional account, or to the Instagram user's Request folder, if the Instagram user does not follow the account." That sentence is why creators write "follow so the link doesn't land in requests".
- Business or Creator account, and maybe a Facebook Page. Meta's Instagram Platform overview lists two paths: Instagram Login "Requires an Instagram Business or Creator Account"; Facebook Login "Requires an Instagram Business or Creator Account linked to a Facebook Page". InstantDM uses Instagram login, so it never asks for a Page.

Nothing on that list has a paid tier. What differs between tools is how they pace sends when a post goes viral. InstantDM publishes its approach on its safety page; ask any other vendor the same question before a launch.
Rule-based vs AI Instagram chatbots: which do you need?
Rule-based if the trigger and the answer are both fixed. AI if people write to you in their own words and expect something other than a menu back. Most accounts need rules first and AI second, and the mistake we see most is paying for the AI tier to deliver a link.
A rule-based bot is a lookup table: comment contains "GUIDE", send this DM with this button. It breaks the moment someone asks "does this work for a 6-month-old?" An AI bot answers from whatever you gave it, a PDF or a website, and can qualify a lead over several turns. It costs more per message and will sometimes say something you didn't approve. Under Meta's policy that's on you, so give it a handoff rule and read the transcripts for the first week.
InstantDM, ManyChat, Chatfuel and Inrō start rule-based and add AI; Chatbase and SetSmart start AI and add rules. Our guide to Instagram AI agents versus rule-based chatbots goes deeper, and the Instagram AI agent page shows how InstantDM's goal-based agent is set up.
InstantDM — best for comment-to-DM and story replies at a flat price
InstantDM is the lowest-priced paid tool here that turns a comment or a Story reply into a DM with a keyword filter, a public reply, buttons and lead capture, for $9.99/mo flat on Legend Pro (instantdm.com/pricing, August 2026). It is an official Meta Business Partner. We build it, so read this as the maker's view and go straight to the cons.

What it does. Comment-to-DM on posts and Reels, Story reply automation, a "post shared to your DM" trigger, keyword replies to inbound DMs, and a Flow Editor for multi-step funnels. Inside a DM it sends a link, up to 3 buttons, a product card, or a Shopify checkout, and collects email and phone in the thread. AI comment replies come with Legend Pro; the goal-based DM agent is set up from the AI agent page. Facebook automation, Make.com and an API are included.
Pricing. Free plan with 500 automations a month, no card. Legend Pro $9.99/mo, paced at up to 750 DMs an hour. Trendsetter $24.99/mo removes that cap and adds follow-up messages and API access. Reviews, for what small counts are worth: 4.2 from 26 on Trustpilot, 4.3 from 161 on Google Play, checked July 2026.
Where it loses. Instagram and Facebook only. If your funnel leaves Meta's apps for WhatsApp, SMS, email or a website widget, pick ManyChat, Chatfuel or Tidio. There is no multi-channel inbox with seats either, so support teams should look elsewhere.
Pros: flat $9.99/mo; free plan; comment, Story and DM triggers; Shopify checkout; in-DM lead capture; no Facebook Page needed; published safety features (DM Safety Queue, Slow-Down Mode, Rate-Limit Controller, Comment Flood Controller). Cons: Instagram and Facebook only; no WhatsApp, SMS or web chat; no multi-channel inbox; smaller review footprint; 750 DMs/hour pacing on Legend Pro.
Choose InstantDM if your funnel lives on Instagram and you want the bill to stay the same after a viral Reel. Head-to-heads: InstantDM vs ManyChat, InstantDM vs Chatfuel, InstantDM vs Inrō.
ManyChat — best for funnels that span Instagram, WhatsApp, SMS and TikTok
ManyChat is the most complete builder here if one flow has to run on Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, SMS and email. Its Instagram page leads with "Turn comments into conversations that sell" and "Reply to DMs" (manychat.com/instagram, August 2026), and its help centre documents Story Reply, Story Mention Reply, Post and Reel Comments, Live Comments and Share to DM triggers. It calls itself an "Official Meta Business Partner" on its pricing page.
Pricing changed in March 2026. ManyChat now bills by active contacts, the people you exchanged messages with in a billing month. Free covers 25 active contacts, 2 channels and 4 automations. Essential is $14/mo for 250 contacts with $0.10 per extra; Pro $29/mo for 2,500 at $0.05; Business $69/mo for 7,500; Advanced $139/mo for 25,000 (manychat.com/pricing, August 2026; confirm the live grid).
Where it loses. The 25-contact free plan is gone in a day on any Reel that works, and every commenter who gets a DM counts as an active contact, so a good month raises the bill. Our list of ManyChat alternatives for Instagram covers the cheaper routes.
Pros: six channels including WhatsApp and SMS; the deepest flow builder; large template library; Manychat AI. Cons: contact-based billing; 25-contact free plan; overage fees; more to learn than one keyword funnel needs.
Choose ManyChat if WhatsApp or SMS is part of the funnel or your agency already builds in it. On channel count and flow depth it beats InstantDM outright.
Chatfuel — best free multi-channel bot builder with an AI upgrade
Chatfuel Light is free and covers Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp with a flow builder, shared inbox and templates, no card required (chatfuel.com/pricing, August 2026). That is the widest free plan here by channel. On Instagram it automates "post comments, stories, mentions, direct messages, and ads", with keyword replies and live chat handoff (chatfuel.com/instagram). It states "Official Meta Partner" and WhatsApp Business Solution Provider status on its pricing page.

Pricing. Light, free, and AI PRO at $49/mo, 29% off yearly, which adds an AI sales manager, an AI knowledge base, broadcasts and lead qualification funnels. The page says "Usage limits apply" without printing the numbers, so open the plan-limits sheet before you trust Light with a launch.
Where it loses. The jump from $0 to $49 is the steepest here; there is no $10 to $25 rung.
Pros: free across three channels; comments, stories, mentions and DMs; AI sales manager on AI PRO; WhatsApp. Cons: $49/mo is the only paid tier; usage limits not itemised; heavier setup than a single-purpose tool.
Choose Chatfuel if you want one free builder for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, or an AI agent to qualify leads without paying per message. InstantDM can't offer WhatsApp at any price.
Tidio — best for a support inbox with live chat and a help desk
Tidio is a customer service platform that also connects to Instagram, and that order is the point. If most of your DMs need a person, Tidio gives that person a shared inbox with live chat, ticketing, email, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram in one view, with 10 seats on the free plan (tidio.com/pricing, August 2026). Its own Instagram guide says the bot replies to "DMs, story replies, and comments" and shows a comment-to-DM template.

Pricing. Free with 50 billable conversations a month. Starter is printed at $24.17/mo under a "2 months free" annual note, so treat that as the annual figure and expect a higher monthly price; Tidio's own blog rounds it to about $29. Growth "starts at $49.17/mo" and rises with usage. Lyro AI Agent is a separate add-on "from $32.50/mo" for 50 AI conversations.
Where it loses. A creator running comment-to-DM funnels pays for ticketing they will never open, and conversation billing means a viral post raises the bill.
Pros: live chat and ticketing in the same inbox as Instagram DMs; 10 free seats; WhatsApp, Messenger and email; Lyro answers from your help centre. Cons: conversation-metered; AI is an add-on; comment-to-DM is a side feature; Meta partner status not stated on its site.
Choose Tidio if a support team answers most of your Instagram DMs and you want them in the same queue as website chat and email. InstantDM has no multi-agent inbox and no website widget.
Inrō — best low-cost AI-first Instagram bot, priced in euros
Inrō is the closest thing to InstantDM's lane on this list: Instagram-only, comment-to-DM, Story reply automation, an AI Agent that "answers, qualifies, and follows up in your DMs", DM campaigns to past contacts, and an inbox with CRM tags (inro.social, August 2026). Its pricing page describes it as a Meta Tech Provider running "on Meta's official API", a lighter tier than Business Partner.

Pricing. In euros. Free is €0 for 100 active contacts a month, 3 automations, 3 campaigns and 50 AI Agent credits. Pro is €12.99/mo for "500+ active contacts", Annual Pro €1,249 a year for "10k+ active contacts", and a Managed Account starts at €200/mo (inro.social/pricing, August 2026). Other comparison pages print Inrō in dollars; use the live page.
Where it loses. Active-contact billing, like ManyChat, and the step from Pro's 500+ contacts to Annual Pro's 10k+ leaves a creator at 3,000 contacts with nothing in between. The pricing page says nothing about rate limits or queueing, so ask before a launch.
Pros: low entry price; AI Agent on every tier; comment, Story and DM triggers; campaigns to past contacts; CRM. Cons: euro pricing for a mostly dollar market; a gap between tiers; no WhatsApp; Tech Provider rather than Business Partner.
Choose Inrō if you want an AI agent in Instagram DMs on a small budget and your active contacts stay in the hundreds. Its DM campaigns to past contacts are something InstantDM doesn't match. Side by side: InstantDM vs Inrō.
Chatbase — best AI agent trained on your docs that also answers Instagram DMs
Chatbase is an AI agent builder. You upload documents or connect a website, and it answers questions in a web widget, Slack, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, with integrations into Zendesk, HubSpot, Shopify and Calendly (chatbase.co/pricing, August 2026). Instagram is one channel among several. Nothing on its pricing page mentions comment automation or Story replies.

Pricing. Free with 50 message credits a month, 1 agent and 1 member. Hobby $40/mo, Standard $150/mo, Pro $500/mo, 20% off yearly. Everything scales on message credits.
Where it loses. It isn't an Instagram comment tool. If a person DMs you a question, Chatbase answers it well; if they comment "LINK" on a Reel, nothing happens.
Pros: the best document-grounded AI answers in this comparison; web, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram from one agent; deep integrations. Cons: no comment-to-DM; no Story replies; credit-metered; $40/mo entry; Meta partner status not stated.
Choose Chatbase if the job is "answer support questions from our docs" on the website and in Instagram DMs. InstantDM's AI isn't trained on a document library and doesn't run on a website.
SetSmart — best for AI appointment setting inside Instagram DMs
SetSmart is an AI setter: "AI-powered DM conversations (GPT, not chatbot flows)" that qualify a lead and propose a calendar slot inside the DM, with Calendly and GoHighLevel booking, comment-to-DM triggers, follow-ups at 4 and 23 hours, voice notes and an Instagram CRM (setsmart.io, August 2026). It states "Official Meta Business Partner" on its homepage.

Pricing. Light $25/mo with 250 AI messages, Pro $97/mo with 1,000, Scale $297/mo with 4,000, Enterprise $797/mo with 15,000, all with a 7-day trial (setsmart.io/pricing, August 2026). There is no free plan. One rendering of the same page shows a "$99/month" line in an FAQ, so confirm at checkout. SetSmart's own comparison post lists InstantDM at $29/mo; the live price is $9.99/mo.
Where it loses. AI-message metering. 1,000 AI messages on Pro is a few hundred conversations, fine for a coach booking calls and wrong for a shop answering thousands of "link?" comments.
Pros: the strongest booking flow here; multi-turn GPT conversations; timed follow-ups; CRM with team access. Cons: metered AI messages; $97/mo for the plan most coaches need; no free plan; no Story trigger listed; no WhatsApp.
Choose SetSmart if you sell calls and want the bot to qualify and book without a human. InstantDM captures the lead and hands off; it doesn't run a booking conversation.
Also consider. Botpress, a developer-grade agent builder: free plan, then Plus at $150/mo billed annually; Instagram isn't on its pricing page (botpress.com/pricing, August 2026). UChat, an omnichannel builder: free for 1 bot and 200 bot users, then Business at $15/mo (uchat.au/pricing, August 2026). Freshchat, a support inbox: free for up to 10 agents, then Growth at $19 per agent per month billed annually, with Instagram from Growth (freshworks.com, August 2026).
How much does an Instagram chatbot cost in 2026?
Free to start on six of the seven, $9.99 to $97 a month for the entry paid tier, and the number that matters is what the plan scales on.
| Tool | Free plan | Entry paid plan | Next tier | The bill scales on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| InstantDM | 500 automations/mo | $9.99/mo Legend Pro | $24.99/mo Trendsetter | Nothing; flat |
| ManyChat | 25 active contacts | $14/mo Essential, 250 contacts | $29/mo Pro, 2,500; $69 Business; $139 Advanced | Active contacts, plus overage |
| Chatfuel | Light, limits not itemised | $49/mo AI PRO | None listed | Flat, with usage limits |
| Tidio | 50 conversations | $24.17/mo Starter as printed | Growth from $49.17/mo; Lyro AI from $32.50/mo | Conversations; AI conversations |
| Inrō | 100 active contacts | €12.99/mo Pro, 500+ contacts | €1,249/yr Annual Pro, 10k+ | Active contacts |
| Chatbase | 50 message credits | $40/mo Hobby | $150/mo Standard; $500 Pro | Message credits |
| SetSmart | None, 7-day trial | $25/mo Light, 250 AI messages | $97/mo Pro, 1,000; $297 Scale; $797 Enterprise | AI messages |
All prices from each vendor's public pricing page, August 2026. Inrō prices in euros on its site.
A worked month. One Reel draws 25,000 comments in a month from 25,000 different people, each with the keyword, and the bot sends each one DM. This is list-price math from the tables above, with no discounts and no repeat commenters, so treat it as an illustration rather than a quote.
- ManyChat: 25,000 people who got a DM are 25,000 active contacts. That is Advanced at $139/mo, which includes exactly 25,000. Staying on Pro would be $29 plus 22,500 extra contacts at $0.05, or $1,154.
- Inrō: 25,000 active contacts is past Annual Pro's "10k+" tier, so you're in Managed Account territory from €200/mo.
- InstantDM: $9.99/mo on Legend Pro, paced at up to 750 DMs an hour, so a 10,000-comment day queues across the day. Trendsetter at $24.99/mo removes that cap, and a quiet month costs the same.
- SetSmart and Chatbase: not built for this. 25,000 conversations is beyond SetSmart's Enterprise tier of 15,000 AI messages, and Chatbase has no comment trigger to fire.
Contact-based pricing is fine at 300 contacts a month and painful at 25,000, so pick by the month you expect. Our post on running an Instagram DM bot at a flat $9.99 shows what that volume looks like in practice.
Which Instagram DM templates can you copy?
Five, each short enough to fit in the one private reply Meta gives you for a comment. Swap the bracketed parts and keep them under 300 characters so they read in full on a phone.

The "requests folder" line in the second template turns Meta's Inbox-versus-Request rule into a follow. For lead capture, use your tool's email button rather than asking people to type, since Instagram fills it from the account's registered email.
Which Instagram chatbot should you pick?
Match the job, check what the bill scales on, then take the cheapest tool that fits.
- Comment-to-DM and Story replies at a flat price: InstantDM, free plan first, then $9.99/mo Legend Pro.
- Funnel that also runs on WhatsApp, SMS or TikTok: ManyChat from $14/mo, or Chatfuel Light free, AI PRO $49/mo.
- Support team, one inbox with website chat and email: Tidio, free for 50 conversations, then $24.17/mo Starter as printed.
- AI agent in Instagram DMs on a small budget: Inrō, free for 100 contacts, then €12.99/mo Pro.
- AI answers from your docs on web and Instagram: Chatbase, free for 50 credits, then $40/mo Hobby.
- Booking sales calls from DMs: SetSmart, $25/mo Light or $97/mo Pro.
If the first row is you, set up one comment keyword on the InstantDM free plan, test it from a second account, and only then decide whether Legend Pro is worth $9.99 a month. If another row is you, the vendor links above go to the source.
