Night desk with a phone open to a chat thread and a notebook of seven DM trigger words

TL;DR

You do not need a 40-node flow. You need seven short scripts and one keyword each. We wrote them, sent them from a second phone, and kept the ones that still made sense on a small screen.

  • 1. Link drop. Comment LINK. First DM is the URL.
  • 2. Value-first. Comment TIPS. One useful sentence, then the link.
  • 3. Email capture. Comment FREE. Send the file, then ask for the address.
  • 4. Story reply. They reply JOIN. First DM is the calendar or pack.
  • 5. Soft pitch. Comment PRICE. Three bullets, the number, the checkout.
  • 6. Booking. Comment BOOK. City or slot, then the calendar.
  • 7. Quiet follow-up. One ping later if they opened and stalled. Then stop.

Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog. The setup steps are InstantDM. The words work in ManyChat or CreatorFlow if that is what you already pay for. Weigh the InstantDM paragraphs accordingly.

InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the official Instagram Graph API. Free plan is 500 automations a month plus a 7-day full-feature trial. Legend Pro is $9.99/month flat. Trendsetter is $24.99/month and adds follow-ups and ads (instantdm.com/pricing, August 2026).

What this page is

CreatorFlow has a five-template post for any niche. The query is real. People sign up, open the message box, and freeze. This is our version. Seven templates, not five, because a booking script and a one-ping follow-up are not extras. They are how coaches and shops actually close.

We tested these as briefs, the same habit as how to create a chat funnel. Write the first DM. Put it on a keyword. Comment from a second account. Open the link inside Instagram's browser. If it fails there, the template failed.

This is not a guaranteed CTR. Offers and audiences decide. The templates remove the blank page.

How we tested the seven

Same week as the chat-marketing cluster, August 2026. Five organic briefs plus one small Click-to-Message check after the organic first DM already worked.

  1. LINK on a product post. First DM was the checkout URL.
  2. TIPS on an educational Reel. First DM was one sentence plus the same URL.
  3. FREE on a lead-magnet post. File first, email after.
  4. JOIN as a story reply. Calendar in bubble one.
  5. PRICE on a sponsored-looking organic post. Three bullets and a number.
  6. BOOK for a local service. City, then calendar.
  7. One Trendsetter follow-up a few hours later on threads that opened and went quiet.

What we killed: four qualifying questions before the PDF. A welcome sequence that took three bubbles to say hello. A follow-up that asked them to "hop on a call" after they already had the link. A story automation that DMed every viewer. That last one is outbound. Official API tools that stay in opt-in exist for a reason.

What we kept: caption names the word, first bubble is the gift, one human path, one later ping at most.

The four lines every template uses

We stole the useful part of every "universal" DM post and made it boring on purpose.

  1. Acknowledge the word they typed. They should feel seen, not processed.
  2. Deliver the thing the caption promised. In bubble one.
  3. One extra line: a tip, a size note, or a button. Not a monologue.
  4. A next step they can do on a phone: tap, reply, or book.

If you cannot fit it on one screen without scrolling, cut it. We watched people bounce a six-line "value" DM and tap a two-line one.

Before you paste anything, have four things on a note: the URL, the keyword, the offer name, and which InstantDM trigger you will use (comment keyword, any comment, story reply, or ads on Trendsetter).

Template 1: the link drop

Best for: any niche that already gets "link?" in comments. Affiliates, shops, photographers, course people with a sales page.

Trigger: LINK, SHOP, SEND, YES

Caption line: Comment LINK and I send checkout.

Copy this DM

Here's the link you asked for:
[YOUR-URL]

Reply if you want a human. I read these.

That is the whole script. We tried a longer hello. People asked where the link was. Speed is the feature.

Swap the URL. If you sell more than one thing, do not put eight products in this template. Put the one from the post. InstantDM can send a product template (up to 10 products) or a button template (up to 3 buttons) if a single URL is messy. Start with one URL anyway.

When we used it: a shop Reel. Keyword LINK. First DM was checkout. InstantDM free plan covers this if you stay under 500 automations that month. Legend Pro at $9.99 if you want unlimited contacts and AI comment replies for the leftovers that are not LINK.

Skip this template if they asked how it works. That is template 2.

Template 2: the value-first reply

Best for: educational accounts. Fitness, food, tech, coaches who teach in public.

Trigger: TIPS, HOW, GUIDE, LEARN

Caption line: Comment TIPS and I send the one thing I'd do first, plus the full guide.

Copy this DM

Quick one: [ONE SENTENCE THEY CAN USE TODAY].

Full thing is here:
[YOUR-URL]

If that doesn't fit your setup, reply and a person will take it.

The tip has to be real. "Stay consistent" is not a tip. "Start with 3 sets of 8 and add weight when week two feels easy" is a tip. We wrote a vague tip once. The thread felt like an ad wearing a compliment.

CreatorFlow's version of this claims a 15–25% CTR lift on high-ticket. We did not measure that number on our sample. What we saw: people stayed in the thread more often when the first sentence was usable without the click. Clicks still depended on the offer. Do not tattoo a percentage on this template.

Niche swaps: food (sear first, then the recipe URL). Tech (test in sandbox, then the tutorial). Photography (expose for the highlights, then the preset pack). Same four lines.

Template 3: the email capture

Best for: anyone building a list. PDF, checklist, presets, meal plan.

Trigger: FREE, PDF, GUIDE, CHECKLIST

Caption line: Comment FREE. I send the file in the DM. Email is optional if you want the updates.

Copy this DM

Here's the [RESOURCE NAME]:
[YOUR-URL]

If you want the next one in your inbox, reply with the email you actually check.
A person can also take it from here.

Gift first. Address second. We tested "drop your email and I'll send it" before the file. People stalled. We tested the file first. More of them sent the address after they had already opened something.

InstantDM collects email and phone in the DM. Use that field after the gift, or for BOOK if you must hold a slot. Do not turn every Reel into a form.

Then send the file. If you promised a bonus, put it in the same thread. "Check spam" is a useful second line. It is not a second campaign.

CreatorFlow's post tells you to detect "@" and auto-reply. That is their mechanic. On InstantDM, use the in-DM capture step. Same job. Different button.

Template 4: the story reply

Best for: anyone who already posts stories and gets replies they ignore until night.

Trigger: they reply JOIN to the story, or InstantDM's any-story-reply trigger if the story already named the offer. Prefer JOIN. It is the opt-in.

Story sticker or text: Reply JOIN for the calendar / pack / list.

Copy this DM

Got you.

[YOUR-URL]

That's the [call / pack / list]. Reply if you need a different time or size.

Story replies are warmer than a random comment. They already tapped. Do not waste that on a brand paragraph. Do not auto-DM every viewer. That is not a template. That is outbound.

Test the calendar inside Instagram's in-app browser. We have killed a BOOK-shaped story funnel in four days because the timezone was wrong. The words were fine. The next step was not.

If you do Lives, the same first DM works on a Live comment keyword. InstantDM covers Live. Same script. Different surface.

Template 5: the soft pitch

Best for: someone who already asked what it costs. Coaches, courses, services, anything over impulse-buy money.

Trigger: PRICE, COST, DETAILS, PROGRAM

Caption line: Comment PRICE for what's included and the number.

Copy this DM

Glad you asked. [OFFER NAME]:

- [Outcome 1]
- [Outcome 2]
- [Outcome 3]

It's [PRICE] and includes [THE THING THEY ACTUALLY GET].
Details: [YOUR-URL]

Questions that aren't on that page: reply here. A person takes those.

Three bullets. Outcomes, not features. The price is in the DM. Hiding it and then sending a 12-section sales page is how you get "so... how much?" again.

Mobile shows a handful of lines. If they have to scroll to find the number, you wrote a landing page into Instagram. Cut it.

Handover is not optional here. High ticket, refunds, legal, anyone who asks for a human. InstantDM hands off inside the Instagram inbox with the thread attached.

Template 6: the booking

Best for: local services, coaches, consultants, anyone whose next step is a calendar, not a cart. This is the template CreatorFlow's five left out and most InstantDM accounts actually need.

Trigger: BOOK, CALL, SLOT

Caption line: Comment BOOK. I'll send the calendar. Reply with your city if you need a location.

Copy this DM

Want you on the calendar.

[CALENDAR-URL]

If you need a specific day, reply with two options and a person will lock it.
This is an auto-reply so you get the link now.

One qualifier at most: city, or this week vs browsing. Two is the ceiling. We tested three questions before the calendar. People left. The calendar is the gift. Qualify after they can see a slot.

InstantDM can collect a date or a phone in the thread if you must hold something. Use it after the calendar link, not instead of it.

Do not run this as comment-to-DM on a website pricing page. That is Drift or Intercom. InstantDM stays on Instagram and Facebook. See sales chat platform features if you are shopping the site bubble separately.

Template 7: the quiet follow-up

Best for: threads that opened the link and went silent. Shops, coaches, anyone who already shipped template 1–6.

Trigger: not a new keyword. This is InstantDM Trendsetter ($24.99/month, August 2026). One later message. Then stop.

Copy this DM

Still want this? Same link:
[YOUR-URL]

I can check stock or a slot if you reply. Otherwise I'll leave you alone.

One ping. Promo follow-ups belong inside Meta's messaging window. A three-day drip on a paid or organic thread is how people block you. We do not write that more follow-ups "10x" anything.

If they booked or bought, do not send this. If they asked a custom question, a person should already have the thread. Template 7 is only for the quiet ones.

Free plan and Legend Pro can run templates 1–6. Template 7 is why Trendsetter exists. If leftovers are rare and nobody opens, skip the follow-up and fix template 1.

Which of the seven you should turn on first

Your week looks like Start with Why
Comments already say link? or shop? 1. Link drop You are already late. Send the URL.
You teach in Reels 2. Value-first The tip matches the content they watched.
You have a PDF and no list 3. Email capture File first, address after.
Stories get replies you ignore 4. Story JOIN Warmest tap you are wasting.
Comments say how much? 5. Soft pitch They asked for the number. Put it in the DM.
The next step is a call or a chair 6. Booking Calendar is the gift.
People open and vanish 7. Follow-up One ping. Then stop.

Start with one. We have watched people try to launch all seven on a Tuesday and ship none. Template 1 takes longer to write the caption than to paste the DM.

The honest stack on one account: LINK on the shop post, BOOK on the service post, JOIN on stories, Trendsetter follow-up on the ones that stall. TIPS and PRICE only if those words already show up in comments. Do not invent a keyword nobody types.

How to put a template in InstantDM

Keep your account inside the lines. Send automated DMs only as replies to comments, story replies, inbound DMs, Live, or Click-to-Message taps. Never cold lists. InstantDM is built on the official Instagram Graph API with DM Queue, Super Slow Mode, Rate Limit Controller, and Flood Control always on. Those keep you inside Instagram's rate limits. They do not make you ban-proof. We do not write ban-proof.

  1. Connect Instagram at app.instantdm.com/signup. Official OAuth. InstantDM does not see your password.
  2. Pick the trigger: comment keyword, any comment, story reply, or ads on Trendsetter.
  3. Paste one template. Put the real URL in. Preview on a phone.
  4. Write the caption or story line that names the word and the gift.
  5. Comment from a second account. Open the link in Instagram. Check unsubscribe or stop language if you will follow up.
  6. Turn it on. Read ten threads on Friday. Change one beat, not all four.

Instagram's UI moves. These steps are accurate as of August 2026. If a menu name changed, the job did not: trigger, first DM, test, then traffic.

AI comment replies on Legend Pro can mop leftover comments that are not LINK or BOOK. They are not an AI agent and they are not a replacement for these seven. Keywords own the campaign. The model owns the leftovers. See how AI chatbots improve marketing engagement.

Live comments and Click-to-Message ads

You do not need templates 8 and 9. You need the same first DM on a new door.

Live: same keyword as the post. If they comment LINK on Live, send template 1. If they comment BOOK, send template 6. InstantDM covers Live.

Ads: Trendsetter. The first DM on a Click-to-Message ad must match the line they tapped. 20% off in the creative means 20% off in bubble one. We tested a generic welcome on a code ad. People asked where the code was. That conversation cost money. Comments on the sponsored post get the same first DM. If you only automate organic, the ad comments sit there unanswered while you pay for the tap. Setup for that layer: Messenger ads and chat tools.

Mistakes that make a good template look broken

Writing a landing page into the DM. Forgetting the next step. Using "Dear valued customer." Never testing on a phone. Measuring messages sent instead of opens and bookings. Buying InstantDM and expecting a website widget. That last one is Tidio or HubSpot. We will not ship a bubble on checkout.

Also: any-comment on a viral Reel with no rate-limit thought. InstantDM's queue and flood controls exist for that week. Any-comment is a trigger, not a growth hack. Prefer a keyword until you have read a Friday sample.

Password tools and unofficial APIs are not this post. Official API only.

What to use if InstantDM is the wrong inbox

InstantDM: Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Live, story replies, Meta ads on Trendsetter. Flat $9.99 or $24.99. No website widget. No WhatsApp as the core product.

ManyChat: if WhatsApp and SMS have to share the flow and you have modeled active contacts. Confirm on manychat.com/pricing. The bill moves with contacts.

CreatorFlow: Instagram-only competitor with its own template library. Meta Tech Provider, a lighter tier than InstantDM's official Meta Business Partner status. If you already live there and only needed five scripts, stay. If you want Facebook, ads, Live, and a $9.99 flat bill, that is why this page exists.

LinkDM: simple link-in-DM. Fine for template 1 and nothing else.

ManyChat, CreatorFlow, and LinkDM are trademarks of their owners. InstantDM is not affiliated with them. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner. That is not an endorsement of this article.

A week to get one template live

Monday: write template 1 or 6 on paper. Tuesday: build it in InstantDM. Wednesday: test from a second phone. Thursday: publish the caption. Friday: read the threads. Do not buy an ad until the organic first DM is the one you would send by hand.

Week two: add story JOIN or the Trendsetter follow-up. Kill any greeting that does not contain the gift.

If you want the longer campaign list after the scripts exist, use small-business chatbot strategies. This page stays the copy deck.

Start InstantDM free. 500 automations a month, no card, plus a 7-day full-feature trial (August 2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are Instagram DM automation templates?

They are pre-written first messages that send when someone comments a keyword, replies to a story, or taps a Click-to-Message ad. The template is the script. The tool is what fires it.

2. Do these templates work in any niche?

Yes if you swap the gift and keep the structure. LINK sends a URL. BOOK sends a calendar. PRICE sends three bullets and a checkout. The niche is the link and the caption, not a new architecture.

3. What is the best first Instagram DM automation template?

The link drop. Caption says comment LINK. First DM is the URL in one sentence. Test it from a second account. Add the other six only after twenty threads look like the script.

4. Do these templates work in InstantDM, ManyChat, and CreatorFlow?

The words work in any official-API tool that can fire a keyword or a story reply. Setup steps below are InstantDM. ManyChat if you also need WhatsApp. CreatorFlow is Instagram-only. Full disclosure, this is InstantDM's blog.

5. How do I collect an email in an Instagram DM?

InstantDM can collect email or phone in the thread after you send the gift. Do not make every Reel comment hand over an address before the file. Ask after they have the thing they commented for.

6. Is InstantDM Meta-approved?

No. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the official Instagram Graph API. That is a partnership program status, not an endorsement of this article or these scripts.

7. Can I use these templates for cold DMs?

No. Only reply to comments, story replies, inbound DMs, Live, and Click-to-Message taps. Cold outreach from a scraped list is how accounts get restricted. InstantDM is not built for that.
