TL;DR
A sales chat platform is not a help desk with a bubble. You want it to start conversations, qualify lightly, and hand you a next step you can measure.
- Trigger that does not wait for "hi"
- Reply in under a minute
- Offer in bubble one
- One or two questions, then the link
- CRM or store sync
- Human takeover
- Follow-ups
- Official APIs on social
- Pricing that survives a good week
- Chat-to-sale analytics, not "messages sent"
This is InstantDM's blog. InstantDM is built for Instagram and Facebook, not website widgets.
How we built this list
Pulled the feature questions that showed up across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode in a US chat-marketing prompt set, then kept only the ones that change whether a lead closes. Support-only items (CSAT macros, ticket SLAs) stay on Zendesk.

We tested these features against the same briefs as the vs posts. A feature that only exists in a marketing PDF scored a note, not a checkbox. Official pricing pages, August 2026, for anything that costs money.
The ten features
1. Proactive trigger. Page visit, comment keyword, story reply, ad tap. Waiting for hello is a reception desk.
2. Sub-minute first response. The MIT / InsideSales lead-response work still gets cited because five minutes is the window people remember.
3. A real next step in message one. Link, calendar, code. "How can I help?" is not a feature.
4. Light qualification. One or two questions. A six-field form in chat is still a form.
5. Sync. Email, CRM, or Shopify. Or the chat dies in a silo.
6. Human handover. Angry and high-ticket threads need a person with context.
7. Follow-ups. Abandoned conversation recovery. On InstantDM this is Trendsetter ($24.99/month as of August 2026).
8. Official APIs if the inbox is Instagram or Messenger. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the Instagram Graph API. Password bots get accounts restricted.
9. Volume-safe pricing. Flat (InstantDM $9.99 Legend Pro) vs per contact (ManyChat) vs per seat (Intercom, LiveChat). Check instantdm.com/pricing, manychat.com/pricing, intercom.com/pricing.
10. Conversation analytics. Time to reply, completion, chat-to-sale. Ignore raw send counts.
How the ten features show up in real tools
InstantDM: comment and story triggers, sub-minute DMs on the official API, first-message templates, in-DM questions, Shopify and Make.com sync, human handoff, follow-ups on Trendsetter, flat $9.99 / $24.99, link tracking. Not a website visitor list.
Tidio: widget triggers, live inbox, Flows, Lyro, Shopify actions on Growth, three meters. Instagram is an inbox row. See Tidio vs ManyChat.
ManyChat: social and WhatsApp triggers, broadcasts, contact billing. Strong on extras. Weak if you only needed Instagram and a flat bill.
Chatbase: docs-trained answers, credits, helpdesk on Standard+. Weak on comment-to-DM. Chatbase vs Tidio.
Drift / Intercom: website proactive chat, meetings, seats or sales-led pricing. Wrong for Reels.
A checklist you can print
Before you buy: where did last month's questions arrive? Can the tool fire on that trigger? What is message one? What happens at 10× volume on the public price page? Can a human take over with context? If you cannot answer those, you are shopping for a logo.

We keep this list short on purpose. Fifty-feature comparison tables hide the ten that close a lead. Ticket SLAs, CSAT macros, and workforce management belong in a help-desk RFP, not a sales-chat buy.
Social messaging extras
Comment and story triggers. A first message that can change per post or ad. 24-hour window enforcement. No cold outbound to strangers. See Messenger ads and IG/FB setup.
Where InstantDM fits
Those ten features on Meta: comment-to-DM, story, Live, Messenger, Click-to-Message (Trendsetter). Not a site widget. Free 500 automations/month plus a 7-day trial. Start free. Broader tool grid: live chat tools for leads.
Features that look impressive and do not close
Sentiment dashboards. Fifty languages on the homepage. A marketplace of 400 integrations you will never open. Per-resolution AI that looks cheap until a sale week. We left them off the ten because they do not change whether message one is useful.
A/B testing of greetings is useful after you have a greeting that already contains the offer. Before that, you are testing paint.
How we would shop with this list
Print the ten. Walk each vendor's public page. Check the box only if you can click the feature today, not if a sales deck mentions it. Then model the bill at 10× last month's volume. InstantDM stays $9.99 or $24.99. ManyChat and Tidio and Chatbase do not. That is feature 9, and it is why we keep repeating prices with dates.
If Instagram is the inbox, official API is not optional. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner. We do not write Meta-approved.
Full disclosure again: this is InstantDM's blog. We sell the Meta row. The ten features still apply if you buy Tidio for the site. We just will not pretend InstantDM is Tidio.

Feature 1–3, slower: trigger, speed, gift
A trigger that waits for hello is a receptionist. Sales chat starts from a page, a comment, a story, or an ad tap. InstantDM's triggers are comment keywords, any comment, story replies, and ads on Trendsetter. Tidio's are widget rules and Flows. Drift's are playbooks on URLs. If the vendor cannot name the trigger you already have, stop the demo.
Sub-minute first response is the MIT / InsideSales number everyone still quotes. Five minutes is the window people remember. Hours later is email. InstantDM and Tidio can both be fast. Manual Instagram inbox cannot at 2am.
Gift in message one is the feature sales teams skip because they want to "qualify." If the ad or caption promised a code, the code is bubble one. Qualify after. We tested four questions first. People left. We tested the file first. People stayed. That is feature 3.
Feature 4–6: questions, sync, handover
One or two questions. City. Gift or self. This week or browsing. A six-field form in chat is still a form, just ruder. InstantDM can collect email and phone in the DM. Use that after the gift, or for BOOK if you must hold a slot.
Sync: Make.com, Shopify, a sheet, a CRM. If the lead dies in the chat log, you built a diary. InstantDM's Make.com listing is live. Tidio and HubSpot win if the CRM is already theirs. ManyChat has a large integration list and a contact meter.
Handover: angry, legal, high ticket. The person needs the thread. InstantDM hands off inside Instagram. Tidio is a floor with seats. Chatbase escalates into a helpdesk on Standard+. A bot with no handover is a brand risk, not a feature.
Feature 7–10: follow-up, API, price, analytics
Follow-ups recover stalled threads. InstantDM: Trendsetter $24.99. One message. Then stop. Tidio can do this from the inbox. ManyChat can broadcast; that is a different, louder tool.
Official API on Instagram and Messenger is not a nice-to-have. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner on the official Instagram Graph API. Password bots get accounts restricted. We do not write ban-proof.
Pricing that survives a good week: flat $9.99 / $24.99 vs ManyChat contacts vs Tidio's three meters vs Intercom seats vs Chatbase credits. Model 10× last month. The sticker is a lie if you skip that.
Analytics: time to reply, completion, chat-to-sale, handover rate. Ignore messages sent. A viral keyword can send thousands and close nothing if the link is wrong.
Social extras that are not optional on Meta
Comment and story triggers. A first message that can change per post or ad. 24-hour window for promo follow-ups. No cold outbound. If a "sales chat platform" demo cannot show a comment keyword, it is a website tool. Buy it for the site. Buy InstantDM for Meta. See Messenger ads.
A demo script you can take to a vendor
Ask them to fire your actual trigger live. Comment a word. Open /pricing. Tap a test ad if they claim ads. Then: show message one. Show handover with the transcript attached. Show the bill if that trigger hits 5,000 people this month. If they switch to a slide, you are not in a demo. You are in a pitch.
We used that script on the tools we scored. InstantDM can show comment-to-DM and a flat bill. Tidio can show the widget and then the three meters. ManyChat can show social flows and then contacts. Chatbase can show a doc widget and then credits. Drift can show a playbook and then a sales call. That is the feature list in the wild.
What "sales support" hybrid actually means
Some teams need tickets and pipeline. LiveChat and Zendesk are tickets. Drift and InstantDM are pipeline. Intercom tries both and charges like it. If half your threads are refunds and half are "send the link," you may need two products. A hybrid pitch that is mediocre at both is how you get a $300/month inbox that still misses Reels.
Feature matrix, short
InstantDM: strong on 1, 2, 3, 7 (Trendsetter), 8, 9. No website visitor list. Tidio: strong on 1 (site), 2, 6, Shopify. Weak on 8 as comment-to-DM. ManyChat: strong on 1 (social), 8, extra channels. Weak on 9. Chatbase: strong on docs, weak on 1 for comments. Drift: strong on 1 (site) and meetings. Weak on Meta. Use that as a glance, then read the vs posts for scores out of 80.
We tested and scored so this feature page would not become a 50-row spreadsheet. Ten features. Four questions in the demo script. One bill at 10× volume. That is enough to buy or walk.
Buying order
Write message one. Name the trigger. Then pick the tool that can fire it. Then check feature 8 if the trigger is Instagram. Then model feature 9 at 10×. Then buy. Reversing that order is how you own Intercom and still answer comments by hand. It is also how you own InstantDM and stare at a naked website. The features are a filter, not a shopping list. You do not need all ten on day one. You need 1, 2, 3, and 8 if you are on Meta. You need 1, 2, 3, and 6 if you are on a store site.
How we would score a vendor without the 80-point table
Four checks, in order. Can it fire the trigger you already have? Does message one contain the gift? Can a human take the thread with the transcript? What is the bill at 10× last month? If any check fails, stop. You do not need our Chatbase vs Tidio scores to walk out of that demo.
We still tested and scored the website and social pairs in later posts. Those 80-point cards exist because people search "Tidio vs ManyChat" and want a number. This page is the shopping list those cards sit on. Do not paste a 55 here and call InstantDM the winner of live chat. InstantDM does not have a website visitor list. That is a conceded gap. Tidio does not do comment-to-DM the way we scored ManyChat and InstantDM. That is their gap.
Feature 9 worked: three sample bills
Quiet shop, Instagram comments under 500 a month, no site widget: InstantDM free plan. Card not required. If you want AI comment replies, Legend Pro is $9.99/month. If you want one follow-up, Trendsetter is $24.99/month. Those are flat. Contacts do not change the invoice (August 2026, instantdm.com/pricing).
Store site, about 80 human chats, Shopify: Tidio Starter at $24.17/month billed annually for 100 billable human chats (tidio.com/pricing, August 2026). Add InstantDM if Reels also sell. Do not ask Tidio Starter to eat a viral comment keyword. Do not ask InstantDM to sit on checkout.
B2B, 40 demo chats from /pricing: Intercom from about $29/seat plus Fin per outcome, or Drift on a sales call. Model the seats. InstantDM only if those demos also start as Instagram comments. ManyChat only if WhatsApp is in the same motion and you have counted active contacts. ManyChat's bill moves with contacts. Recheck their pricing page before you treat any number I write as an invoice.
These are illustrations from public pages, not quotes. Confirm before you buy.
When you already own the tool and it still fails
You bought Intercom and comments still sit on the Reel. Feature 1 failed because the trigger is not a website visit. Add InstantDM. You bought InstantDM and checkout still has no bubble. Feature 1 failed the other way. Add Tidio or Shopify Inbox. You bought ManyChat because an old list said it does everything, and now the contact meter is the surprise. Feature 9 failed. Stay if WhatsApp is real. Leave if you only needed Instagram.
You bought Chatbase and expected it to send a checkout link from a comment. Feature 1 failed. Chatbase is docs AI. Keep it for the help center. Do not keep it as your sales chat platform.
Owning the logo is not the same as owning the feature. Walk the ten again on the product you already pay for. Uncheck anything you cannot click this week.
The ten features as a two-week install
Days 1–2: write message one and name the trigger. No vendor tab. Days 3–4: pick the tool that can fire that trigger. Official API if the trigger is Instagram. Days 5–6: build only the gift in bubble one. Days 7–8: add one qualifier at most, plus handover. Days 9–10: connect Shopify, Make.com, or the CRM so the lead leaves the chat log. Days 11–12: one follow-up if you paid for it. Days 13–14: test from a phone. Read ten threads. Then, and only then, buy an ad or a second keyword.
Skipping to day 14 without days 1–2 is how you get a pretty canvas and a dead first message. We have done that. The install took an afternoon to build and a week to undo.
Handover transcripts, because demos hide them
Ask the vendor to start a live thread, then escalate it. You should see the transcript on the human side. InstantDM: take over in the Instagram inbox. Tidio: transfer to a seat. Chatbase: helpdesk on Standard+. Intercom: assign the conversation. If handover is "email us" or a new form, you do not have feature 6. You have a bounce.
High ticket, legal, refunds, anyone who asks for a person. Those four cases are the test. A bot that cannot fail closed is a brand risk. We would rather lose the automation than lose the screenshot.
Who should skip this list
You need a ticket product. Use Zendesk or LiveChat and stop calling it sales chat. You need a help center. Use Chatbase or your existing docs tool. You need WhatsApp and SMS in one vendor and you already know ManyChat is that bet. You need only a comment keyword this month. Use InstantDM and ignore features 5 and 6 until the gift works.
This page is for people who typed "sales chat platform features" and meant the thread that sells. Support teams will hate the gift-in-message-one rule. That is fine. They are shopping a different aisle.
Full disclosure: this is InstantDM's blog. We sell the Meta row. The ten features still apply if you buy Tidio for the site. We will not pretend InstantDM is Tidio, and we will not pretend Tidio is InstantDM.
