Instagram analytics

Instagram Insights, explained

Instagram Insights is the free analytics panel built into professional Instagram accounts. It shows reach, views, accounts engaged, interactions, follower growth and audience demographics for your account, plus per-post numbers for everything you publish. It is available only on Creator and Business accounts, only in the mobile app, and only from the day you switched.

This page covers how to open Insights, what every metric and icon actually means, why they sometimes vanish — and what to do when the app's 90-day window stops being enough.

How to view your Instagram Insights

Insights live in three separate places depending on what you want to look at. All three require a professional account, and all three are mobile-only — there is no way to open them on desktop.

  1. Switch to a professional account

Settings → Account type and toolsSwitch to professional account, then pick Creator or Business. This is the step people miss: Insights start collecting from the moment you switch and are never backdated. On day one the panel is empty, and that is expected.

  2. Open your account insights

Go to your profile, tap the hamburger menu in the top right, then Insights. Pick a date range — 7, 14, 30 or 90 days. Ninety days is the ceiling, and it is a rolling window, so the oldest day drops off as each new one arrives.

  3. Open one post's insights

Open any post you published and tap View insights underneath it. You will see reach, views, interactions, profile visits and follows attributed to that post. Only you can see this link — it does not appear on other people's posts.

  4. Open Story insights

Swipe up on a Story while it is still live, or find it later in your Story archive. Story insights survive for 14 days and then disappear permanently. If you want to keep them, you have to capture them inside that window.

The three-tap path to Instagram Insights

What
Three Instagram mobile screens side by side, left to right: (1) your profile with the hamburger menu open, (2) the menu with 'Insights' highlighted, (3) the Insights overview showing reach, accounts engaged and a date-range selector. Draw a numbered purple circle (01, 02, 03) on the tap target in each screen, matching the step numbers above.
How
Real Instagram app, real professional account, light mode. Screenshot on a phone at 3x. Blur the username, profile photo and any follower count. Compose the three screens on a #fafafa background with a 1px #e4e4e7 border around each, no drop shadow, no rounded corners — match the page.

Why
This is the 15,300/mo 'how to view insights on Instagram' cluster. Google's SERP for it is a video carousel — a clear step image is the minimum price of entry.

What each Instagram Insights metric means

Most of the confusion around Instagram Insights comes from two pairs of metrics that look interchangeable and are not: reach versus views, and accounts engaged versus interactions. One of each pair counts people; the other counts events.

Reach

The number of unique accounts that saw your content at least once. One person who watches your Reel five times counts once. Reach is the honest measure of how far a post travelled.

Views

The total number of times your content was played or displayed, including repeat plays from the same account. Instagram made Views the headline metric across posts, Reels and Stories, replacing the old Impressions label.

Accounts engaged

Unique accounts that liked, saved, commented, shared or replied. This is the number that actually tracks whether people care, and it is almost always far smaller than reach.

Interactions

The total of likes, comments, shares and saves. One account can produce several interactions, which is why this number runs ahead of accounts engaged.

Profile visits

How many times your profile was opened from that post. A high reach with near-zero profile visits usually means the post entertained people but gave them no reason to look you up.

Follows

Accounts that followed you directly from a post. Instagram reports this sparsely and returns zero for most posts, so an empty column here is normal rather than a bug.

External link taps

Taps on the link in your bio. Instagram under-reports this in the app: the number it shows on the account overview is almost always zero unless the metric is requested with a contact-button breakdown.

Watch time (Reels)

Average watch time is the mean seconds watched per play. Total watch time is every second, added up. Average watch time tells you whether the hook works; total watch time tells you whether the algorithm will keep pushing it.

The Instagram Insights icons, explained

Instagram labels almost nothing. The insights panel is a row of small glyphs and a number, and the meaning of each one depends on whether you are looking at a post, a Reel or a Story.

Likes

Accounts that liked the post.

Comments

Comments left on the post, including your own replies.

Shares

Times the post was sent to someone in a DM or added to a story.

Saves

Accounts that saved the post to a collection. The strongest signal you can get — it means someone wanted it later.

View insights

The bar-chart link under your own posts. Only you can see it.

Follows

Accounts that followed you from this post.

Forward

On Stories: a tap to skip to your next story frame. A high forward rate on one frame means that frame is losing people.

Back

On Stories: a tap back to the previous frame. Usually a good sign — someone wanted to re-read something.

Exited

On Stories: the viewer left your story entirely. This is the number to watch.

Other

Views that did not come from Home, Profile, Explore or Hashtags — typically a saved post, a notification, or a link someone shared in a DM.

The native post-insights panel, every icon labelled

What
One real Instagram post-insights panel, zoomed so the icon row is legible. Each glyph — heart, speech bubble, paper plane, bookmark, bar chart — gets a callout line to a label naming it and a two-word gloss (e.g. 'Send — shared in a DM'). Include a second, smaller panel beneath for a Story showing Forward, Back and Exited, because those three icons do not appear on posts.
How
Real Instagram app, a post with non-zero numbers on every metric so no icon looks dead. Redact the caption and the account name. Callout lines: 1px #6d28d9, labels in Space Grotesk 12px on #fafafa. Do not redraw the icons — Google needs to match what the user is staring at in their app.

“Instagram post insights panel with each icon labelled: likes, comments, shares, saves, and view insights”
Why
Worth ~1,480/mo on its own ('instagram insight icons' 590 at KD 25, 'instagram post insights icons meaning' 110 at KD 20). This section cannot rank without a real annotated screenshot — the query is inherently visual.

Creator vs Business accounts: what actually differs

Both account types get Instagram Insights, and both get the same core metrics and the same 90-day ceiling. Switching from one to the other will not give you more data or more history. What changes is everything around the numbers.

Creator

  • A growth-focused follower breakdown — follows and unfollows over time
  • The creator inbox, with primary and general tabs
  • Flexible profile categories and a category label you can hide

Business

  • Contact buttons — email, call, directions — and taps on them
  • Shopping and product tagging
  • Scheduling and publishing through Meta's business tools

Pick Business if people need to contact or buy from you. Pick Creator if you are building an audience. Neither unlocks better analytics.

Why your Instagram Insights aren't showing

Almost every case is one of these five, in roughly this order of likelihood.

  1. You are still on a personal account. Insights do not exist there. Switch to Creator or Business.
  2. You switched recently. Data collection starts at the switch. There is nothing to show yet, and nothing from before will ever appear.
  3. The post predates the switch. Old posts keep their likes and comments but have no insights attached, and never will.
  4. You have too few followers. Audience demographics — age, gender, cities, countries — need roughly 100 followers before Instagram will show them. The rest of your insights still work.
  5. The Story is older than 14 days. Story insights expire. This is not a bug and there is no setting to extend it.

Where native Instagram Insights stops

Instagram Insights is genuinely good at one job: telling you what a single post did, shortly after it did it. It was never built to answer the questions that actually change what you post next.

  • It forgets. Ninety days, then the data is gone. You cannot compare this quarter to last.
  • It won't rank your posts. Finding your best five Reels means scrolling and writing numbers down.
  • It won't tell you when to post. There is no analysis of what time or day your own posts perform best.
  • It won't tell you which format wins. Reels versus carousels versus stories — you have to work it out yourself.
  • It can't connect a post to an outcome. A Reel drove forty DMs and eleven link clicks. Insights has no idea.
  • It can't be shared. No link, no export, no PDF. Only screenshots.
  • It's trapped in the phone. No desktop, no download, no copy-paste.

Knowing what a metric means is only half of it. If you want to know what counts as a good engagement rate for your follower count, how a viral post is actually measured, and what to change on Monday, read the Instagram Insights Guide — it walks through every number in the free report and shows the formula behind each score.

What
The top of a real InstantDM report: profile row, the six metric tiles (Total Reach, Accounts Engaged, DMs Automated, New Followers, Link Clicks, IG Bio Link Clicks) with their week-over-week deltas, and the reach-over-time chart below. This is the payoff shot — it must look worth thirty seconds of the visitor's time.
How
Run the app (f:persnoalinsta-automate), open /temp-report on an account with real 30-day data. Browser at 1440px wide, no browser chrome. Swap the username and avatar for a demo handle. Do NOT use an account with near-zero numbers — empty tiles read as a broken product.

  • We never post, comment or message on your behalf
  • Revoke access from Instagram at any time, in two taps

Top-posts leaderboard (the row the app has no answer for)

What
The podium: ranks 2, 1, 3 left to right with #1 taller and highlighted, each showing the post thumbnail and its metric value. Include the metric toggle (Views / Reach / Engagement / Followers) and the window toggle (Today / 7 / 14 / 30 / All time) so it reads as interactive, not a static chart.
How
From /temp-report on a demo account with at least ten posts carrying real numbers. Pick the Views metric and the 30-day window — Followers is sparse and the podium will look empty (Instagram returns 0 follows for most posts). Crop to the leaderboard panel only.

Best time to post — reach by time band and weekday

What
Two charts: average reach per posting-time band (Morning / Afternoon / Evening / Night, each with its hour range), and average reach by weekday. The winning band and winning day are highlighted. Include the caption line the app generates, e.g. 'Morning (8:00–11:00) averages 618 reach'.
How
From /temp-report, the posting-time panel. Needs an account whose posts span several times of day, otherwise the bands are mostly empty and the chart proves nothing.

It's your data — take it anywhere

Instagram gives you numbers you can look at. We give you numbers you can use.

Download it

Export the whole report as a PDF for a client, an Excel-ready CSV for a spreadsheet, or raw JSON for a developer. One click each.

Chat with it

One button copies your full report and opens ChatGPT or Claude. Ask why a post worked, what to fix, what to post next. Your data goes to your clipboard — not to us.

Point your own agent at it

Share your report and it becomes JSON at a URL you control. Paste that into your own AI agent, a scheduled job, or a notebook.

The Raw data panel — PDF, JSON, Excel, Copy

What
The expanded 'Raw data' section: the heading, the hint line ('Every metric behind this report — export or analyse it yourself'), the four buttons (PDF, JSON, Excel, Copy), and the first ~12 lines of the pretty-printed report JSON visible beneath them.
How
From /temp-report, click the Raw data heading to expand it. Real JSON, not lorem — a reader should be able to recognise reach/views/followers keys. Label the Excel button honestly if you add a caption: it downloads a .csv.
Size
Displays full content width (1136px). Export 2272×1100 @2x, WebP, under 180 KB.

Chat with your report — the copy-and-paste handoff

What
The 'Chat with your report' modal: the three numbered steps, the ChatGPT and Claude buttons with their logos, and the 'Instagram report data pasted…' mock. Optionally a second frame showing the pasted JSON inside a real ChatGPT conversation with a useful answer.
How
From /temp-report, click 'Chat with your report'. If you shoot the second frame, use a real ChatGPT session with the real report JSON — a faked answer here would be a lie about a feature we are describing accurately.

“Modal that copies an Instagram report and opens it in ChatGPT or Claude”
Why
Supports the privacy claim in the copy — the data goes to the clipboard, not to our servers. The modal wording should visibly say so.

Share your report with clients, agencies and brands

Native Instagram Insights cannot be shared. You screenshot it, and the person on the other end has to take your word for it. Both of these are live links instead.

Share the whole report

Send your agency, your client or your manager a link they can open without an account. The data is live — every view pulls fresh numbers, so the link never goes stale. Add a password if you want one.

Share one Reel with a brand

You ran a collab Reel. The brand wants proof. Send them a live link to that one post — the media, the caption, and a grid of real numbers: reach, views, likes, comments, saves, shares, interactions and engagement rate.

Image placeholder — not yet captured

What the brand sees when you share one Reel

What
The public single-post view at /r/<token>, exactly as a logged-out brand sees it: the Reel thumbnail, the caption, and the eight-stat grid (Reach, Views, Likes, Comments, Saves, Shares, Interactions, Engagement rate), plus the 'why this post performed' line. Show the browser URL bar containing app.instantdm.com/r/… — the point is that it's a link, not a screenshot.
How
Create a real share: POST /temp-report/share with kind='post' and a media_id, then open /r/<token> in a private window with no session. Shoot it logged out. Confirm no edit controls, no Share button and no save bar are visible — if any appear, that is a bug worth fixing before this ships.
Size
Displays full content width (1136px). Export 2272×1400 @2x, WebP, under 220 KB.
File
/images/insights/shared-post-brand-view.webp
Alt
“A brand's view of a shared Instagram Reel report showing reach, views, saves and engagement rate”
Why
The sharpest story on the page: 'the brand wants proof, send a live link, not a screenshot they have to trust.' Worth the extra effort of a genuinely logged-out capture.

Instagram Insights FAQ

What is Instagram Insights?

Instagram Insights is the free analytics panel built into professional Instagram accounts. It shows reach, views, accounts engaged, interactions, follower growth and audience demographics for your account, and per-post numbers for everything you publish. It is available only on Creator and Business accounts, and only from the day you switched.

How do you view insights on Instagram?

Open your profile and tap the hamburger menu, then Insights. For a single post, open the post and tap 'View insights' underneath it. For a Story, swipe up while it is live, or find it in your Story archive within 14 days. Insights are visible only to you, and only in the mobile app.

How do I turn on Instagram Insights?

Insights turn on automatically once you switch to a professional account. Go to Settings, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account, and pick Creator or Business. Insights start collecting from that moment — they are not backdated, so you will see an empty panel on day one.

Why can't I see insights on Instagram?

The four usual reasons: you are still on a personal account; you switched recently and there is no data yet; the post was published before you switched; or you have fewer than about 100 followers, which is roughly where Instagram starts showing audience demographics. Story insights also disappear once the story is more than 14 days old.

What do the insights on Instagram mean?

Reach is unique accounts that saw the post. Views is the total number of plays or displays, including repeats. Accounts engaged is unique accounts that interacted. Interactions is the total of likes, comments, shares and saves. Profile visits and follows tell you whether the post sent anyone toward your profile.

What does 'Other' mean in Instagram Insights?

'Other' covers views that did not arrive from Home, Profile, Explore or Hashtags. In practice it is mostly saved posts, notifications, and links people shared with each other in DMs. A large 'Other' share usually means your post was passed around privately, which is a good sign.

What does 'Forward' mean in Instagram Insights?

Forward is a Story metric. It counts viewers who tapped to skip ahead to your next frame. Taken alone it is neutral — people tap through stories quickly. What matters is which frame has an unusually high forward rate compared to the frames around it, because that is where you are losing attention.

Do Creator and Business accounts get different insights?

The core metrics are the same. Business accounts add contact buttons, shopping features and the ability to schedule from Meta's tools. Creator accounts add a growth-focused follower breakdown and a creator inbox. Neither gives you more historical data than the other — both are capped at the same window.

How far back do Instagram Insights go?

Account-level insights reach back 90 days at most, and Story insights disappear after 14 days. Nothing before the day you switched to a professional account exists at all. If you want a record beyond that, you have to capture it yourself as it happens.

Is InstantDM's Instagram analytics report free?

Yes. Connect your Instagram and the report is free. InstantDM is an official Meta Business Partner and connects through Instagram's own login with read-only insights access. We never post, comment or message on your behalf, and you can revoke access from Instagram at any time.
