A chat funnel is a branching conversation that takes someone from a trigger — a comment, story reply, website visit, or WhatsApp message — to one outcome: a qualified lead, a booked call, a checkout, or a closed ticket.
The best tool depends on the channel where people already talk, not on a single “#1” logo.
TL;DR — August 2026
If this is your main channel | Start here | Runner-up |
Instagram comments, stories, inbound DMs | InstantDM or ManyChat | Chatfuel, LinkDM |
Website visitors + live handoff | Tidio | Landbot, Intercom |
Conversational landing pages / quizzes | Landbot | involve.me (page + quiz, not inbox chat) |
WhatsApp-first markets | WATI | Respond.io |
Enterprise website-to-meeting | Intercom or Drift | Qualified |
Custom AI agents | Botpress | Voiceflow |
Multi-channel social + SMS/email | ManyChat | Chatfuel |
Prices and plan names below were checked against vendor help centers and pricing pages in August 2026. Confirm before you buy — Several vendors changed tiers in 2026.
What a chat funnel is (and what it is not)
A chatbot answers questions. A chat funnel has four properties:
- A defined entry (this keyword, this story, this pricing page)
- A defined exit (book, capture, checkout, resolve)
- Branching (the next line depends on what they said)
- Data movement (tags, fields, and the transcript leave the chat)
"These properties aren't arbitrary — they map to Meta's standard messaging policy, which gives businesses a 24-hour reply window and requires the user to initiate contact."
A page funnel (ClickFunnels, GoHighLevel, Systeme.io, Perspective) is opt-in page - VSL - checkout. Useful when traffic hits a URL. It is not a chat funnel. If demand starts in Instagram comments, a landing page still loses everyone who never taps the link in bio.
This distinction is why most “best funnel builder” articles fail this query. They rank page software for a conversation job.
How we compared these tools
We scored 14 tools in August 2026 on the same job: an eight-node lead-magnet / qualify / book-or-capture funnel.
Criteria (equal weight):
- Channel fit for the job the vendor claims
- Official API / compliance (Meta Graph, WhatsApp BSP, no password bots)
- Branching depth (6+ steps, a “not sure” path)
- Cost at spike (200 / 2,500 / 10,000 / 50,000 conversations or active contacts)
- CRM and tags (email, source, keyword, conversation ID)
- Human handover with transcript
- Node-level analytics
- Time to first live flow for a non-engineer
We built or walked the same skeleton in InstantDM, ManyChat, Chatfuel, Tidio, and Landbot.
Remaining tools were scored from live pricing pages, docs, and 2026 comparison tests (including Conferbot’s April 2026 no-code builder review and vendor help articles dated through 19 August 2026).
This is not a lab certification. It is a buyer’s protocol you can repeat.

Cost at scale (the table most listicles skip)
Sticker price is not the bill after a viral week. Model four volumes.
Assumptions: “conversation” ≈ a person who enters the flow that month. WhatsApp BSP tools also incur Meta per-message fees on top.
Rate and quality tiers are set by Meta's messaging limits and throughput tiers, and WATI/Respond.io inherit them regardless of vendor.
Volume | InstantDM | ManyChat (annual-ish) | Chatfuel | Tidio + Lyro | Landbot | Intercom Fin |
200 | $9.99 | Essential $14–17 | Light / AI PRO | ~$29 | Sandbox / Starter | Overkill |
2,500 | $9.99 | Pro ~$29 + overage if over 2,500 | ~$49–69 | Mid plan + AI add-on | Starter → Pro | Seats + resolutions |
10,000 | $9.99–$24.99 | Business ~$69 + $0.018–$0.025 extra contacts | Same paid plan | High hundreds | Pro / Business | Four figures easy |
50,000 | $9.99–$24.99 | Advanced $139 + extras; can exceed $200–400 | Same plan; watch conversation caps | $1,000+ in several public models | Business / custom | Enterprise |
How to read it: If Instagram can spike, prefer a flat or high-cap official API tool. If volume is steady on a website, Tidio or Landbot is predictable. If a support team resolves thousands of tickets, Intercom’s per-resolution math can beat seats — or explode if Fin does not resolve.
The eight-point filter
Buy only if the tool clears these:
- The channel you already own. Instagram comment-to-DM is not a website widget.
- Official API. Password logins and browser bots are a restriction vector.
- Six to eight steps plus a “just browsing” branch.
- A bill you can explain after a spike.
- Tags and CRM exit (email, source, keyword, conversation ID).
- Handover with transcript.
- Drop-off by node.
- Rules for the money path, AI for messy language. Hybrid beats “AI everywhere.”
If any of 2, 4, 5, or 6 fail, skip it.
Tool reviews
InstantDM — best flat-price Instagram chat funnel

Best for: Creators, coaches, D2C, and affiliates whose funnel starts in comments, story replies, or inbound DMs. Not for: WhatsApp broadcasts, SMS, or email journeys in the same canvas.
What it does: Comment-to-DM, story triggers, keywords, follow-for-link, in-thread email capture, custom flows, AI comment replies, follow-ups. Runs on Instagram’s official API as a Meta Business Partner. Safety pacing (rate limits, overload handling, slowdown) is the feature people notice after a Reel pops.
Pricing: Free — 500 automations/mo, no card. Legend Pro — $9.99/mo annual ($12 monthly). Trendsetter — $24.99/mo (higher safety/throughput, webhooks). Contacts are not a meter.
Spike cost: Stays on the same plan. That is the point. Setup: Under an hour for a keyword - DM - capture flow. Weakness: It is Instagram, facebook platform only, not for Whatsapp.
ManyChat — best multi-channel visual builder

Best for: Teams that already think in tags, sequences, and more than one Meta surface. Not for: A single IG account that spikes and must stay under $20.
What it does: The default visual flow builder. Templates, broadcasting, Shopify, WhatsApp/SMS/email on higher plans. AI conversations start on Pro in the 2026 plan set.
Pricing (19 August 2026 help docs): Free — 25 active contacts. Essential — $17/mo or $14 annual, 250 contacts, then $0.10 / $0.08 extra. Pro — $39 / $29, 2,500 contacts. Business — $99 / $69, 7,500. Advanced — $139 annual, 25,000. WhatsApp is not on Essential.
Spike cost: A viral month is an invoice event. Setup: Fast if you have used it; slower if you have not — the canvas is powerful and noisy. Weakness: Active-contact billing after March 2026. Model 10k contacts before you fall in love with the templates.
Chatfuel — simplest Meta + WhatsApp AI SKU

Best for: Shops that want Instagram/Messenger/WhatsApp plus an AI knowledge base without five add-ons. Not for: People who want Complex marketing-automation graph.
What it does: Light free tier plus a single AI PRO plan (commonly $49/mo billed yearly, $69 monthly) with Fuely AI.
Spike cost: Simpler ; still watch conversation caps. Setup: Short. Weakness: Smaller ecosystem and fewer “course-sized” templates.
Tidio — best website chat funnel for small stores

Best for: Shopify/Woo teams who need live chat first and a bot second. Not for: Comment-to-DM as the core growth loop.
What it does: Visitor monitoring, visual flows, Lyro AI deflection, helpdesk-adjacent inbox.
Pricing: Free with a small conversation cap. Starter around $29/mo. Lyro is a separate add-on; AI volume is where cost grows. Public 2026 models put high conversation months in the hundreds to $1,000+ range.
Setup: Among the fastest website installs. Weakness: Instagram is a channel, not the product.
Landbot — best conversational landing page

Best for: Ad traffic that should land in a designed conversation (quiz, calculator, qualify). Not for: Native Instagram comment automation as the system of record.
Pricing: Standard track from about €40/mo Starter; WhatsApp is a separate, dearer track. AI chats are metered (public figures around €1 over the included quota).
Setup: Beautiful canvas, more design time than a DM keyword. Weakness: Metered chats + AI. A busy ad account outgrows Starter quickly.
Intercom — best support-led SaaS conversation layer

Best for: Product companies with a help center and a support/sales team. Not for: Creators buying a comment funnel.
What it does: Inbox, workflows, Fin AI on help-center content. Fin is often $0.99 per resolution on top of seats ($39+).
Spike cost: Cheap if Fin actually resolves; expensive if it only deflects poorly. Weakness: Price and complexity for a one-person shop.
Drift (Sales Loft) — enterprise website-to-meeting

Best for: B2B teams routing high-intent site traffic to AEs. Not for: Anyone without a five-figure software budget.
Playbook-driven chat, Salesforce-class routing, custom pricing often from ~$2,500/mo. Deep on meetings; shallower on social DMs.
Voiceflow — conversation design canvas

Best for: Teams designing multi-turn agents (chat + voice) before they lock a channel. Not for: Same-day Instagram capture.
Public self-serve pricing tightened toward sales-led in 2026. Strong on control, weak on “publish a comment keyword this afternoon.”
Botpress — custom agent infrastructure

Best for: Engineers who want visual flow plus code, with a self-host path. Not for: Non-technical operators.
Free to start if you self-host; cloud and tokens become the bill. Highest ceiling, slowest first flow for a marketer.
Conferbot — omnichannel SMB alternative

Best for: Teams that need many channels without Intercom money. Not for: Instagram-only creators who only needed comment-to-DM.
April 2026 third-party-style scoring (their own) put it first among no-code builders on AI + channel count, from ~$49/mo. Treat that as one data point, not gospel.
WATI — WhatsApp marketing funnel

Best for: Official WhatsApp broadcasts, templates, green-tick onboarding. Not for: Instagram-native creators.
Entry often ~$39–59/mo plus Meta conversation charges. In India, LATAM, and much of APAC this is the chat funnel.
For the mechanics every BSP inherits from Meta — not just WATI — see how the WhatsApp customer service window works.
Respond.io — omnichannel inbox + routing

Best for: Teams that must keep WhatsApp, Instagram, and email on one timeline. Not for: Solo creators.
From ~$79/mo. Stronger as an operating system than as a “first keyword today” tool.
LinkDM — fixed-cap Instagram AutoDM

Best for: Three accounts and a known monthly DM ceiling (~25,000 DMs at ~$19/mo). Not for: Deep qualify → book logic.
Official-API, simpler, thinner CRM.
ClickFunnels, GoHighLevel, Systeme.io — exclude from this job
They win “best funnel builder” SERPs because they build pages and email. Some have chat add-ons. None replace Instagram Graph comment-to-DM. Use them downstream of a chat capture, not instead of one.
How to build the first chat funnel (LiveChatAI-length SOP)
Do not start with 40 nodes. Start with one outcome and one trigger.
Step 1 — One outcome, six words. “Email for the guide.” “Book a 15-min call.” “Send the SKU link.” If you cannot say it in six words, the flow will ramble.
Step 2 — Pick the leakiest entry. The post that already gets “price?” comments. The story that already gets replies. The pricing page with the highest exit rate among engaged visitors. Do not invent a new campaign to test the plumbing.
Step 3 — Map eight boxes on paper. Trigger - opener - Q1 - Q2 - offer - “not now” - capture - handover. That is the whole v1.
Step 4 — Write the opener like a person. Bad: “Thanks for your interest. Please select from the following options.” Better: “Want the pricing sheet or a 15-min call? Reply PRICE or CALL.”
Step 5 — Qualify with one or two questions, not a form. Budget band, timing, or product. The “I’m just browsing” branch is not optional. That path is often the later buyer.
Step 6 — Capture and tag. Email, phone, or calendar. Store source, keyword, and branch. If the data dies in the inbox, you built a notifier.
Step 7 — Handover with transcript. A human who re-asks “so what do you need?” burns the qualification you already paid for.
Step 8 — Respect the window. Meta's 24-hour messaging window is a design constraint, not a suggestion — see Meta's conversation-based pricing rules for how the window and Free Entry Point periods interact.
Test on a phone, on a second account. Send “idk,” send garbage, send a voice note if your channel allows it. Then lock the flow for 14 days. The first node that loses half the people is the only rewrite in week one.
A usable v1 is 6–10 hours. Numbers you trust take two weeks of traffic.
Chat funnels by stage (TOFU / MOFU / BOFU)
TOFU — capture attention that already exists. Comment keyword, story reply, click-to-message ad. Goal: a reply, not a pitch.
MOFU — qualify without a 12-field form. Two questions, one asset, one escape hatch.
BOFU — book or buy. Calendar, checkout, order status, human.
After the close — do not start a new tool. Confirmation, one objection handler, one referral ask. Same thread if the window allows.
Four flows worth copying
1. Comment-to-DM lead magnetGUIDE - opener + asset - “Want this in your email too?” - capture - tag lead-magnet - one follow-up with a single CTA. 2. DTC SKU path Product emoji or LINK - size/color - checkout URL - one reminder inside the window. 3. Booking pathCALL - timeline + budget band - calendar if they pass - asset if they do not. Never dead-end a “not now.”
4. Website intent-to-meeting Pricing-page visit - “plans or just comparing?” - book or three-question interviewer - CRM + transcript.
What to measure every week
Metric | Healthy v1 range | If it is bad |
Continue rate after opener | 8–20% cold-ish social; higher on comment triggers | Rewrite opener; you pitched too early |
Capture or book rate | 3–10% of people who entered | Question 1 is a form. Shorten it |
Drop-off by node | No single node should eat >50% | That question is the product |
Handover show / reply | Track separately from bot book rate | Transcript missing or SLA too slow |
Cost per captured lead | Software + ads + time | You chose the wrong price meter |
Transcripts beat dashboards. The phrases people type — “UPI okay?”, “available in Coimbatore?”, “do you have a 20k option?” — become the next branches. If your tool only reports “messages sent,” you are flying blind.
Lock the flow two weeks. Then change one node. Then lock again.
Mistakes that kill chat funnels
- Email ask in message one.
- No “just browsing” branch.
- Unofficial Instagram tools (passwords, scrapers, browser bots).
- Contact-based pricing you did not model at 10k.
- Thirty branches before thirty conversations.
- Handover without a transcript.
- Buying ClickFunnels to solve DMs.
- Ignoring the 24-hour window.
- Ranking a tool #1 because you sell it — including this page. Use the table, not the logo.
- Measuring sends instead of node drop-off.
Decision
If buyers raise their hand in Instagram comments and stories, build there with an official API tool and prefer flat pricing if volume is spiky — InstantDM is built for that job; ManyChat is the broader canvas if you also need WhatsApp and SMS. If they bounce on your website, start with Tidio or Landbot and move to Intercom or Drift when a sales team needs routing. If WhatsApp is the market, start with a BSP (WATI) or an omnichannel inbox (Respond.io) and budget Meta’s message fees.
Draw eight boxes. Ship the opener this week. Let node drop-off tell you what to rewrite.
