Quick answer

A good Instagram caption says one thing in its first line, because the feed hides everything after roughly 125 characters behind a "more" link. This page has more than 300 original captions you can copy and paste, grouped by mood, occasion and season. Captions can run to 2,200 characters, and a post now takes up to 5 hashtags.

  • The maximum caption length is 2,200 characters, counting spaces, emoji, hashtags and line breaks.
  • The feed shows only the opening of a caption. Creators measure the cut at about 125 characters, though Instagram has never published the number.
  • A URL in a caption is plain text for almost everyone. Meta confirmed a test of clickable caption links for Meta Verified subscribers in March 2026.
  • Instagram cut the hashtag allowance from 30 to 5 per post or reel on December 18, 2025.
  • You can edit a caption any time after posting. Instagram may mark it "Edited".
  • A caption that asks for a comment keyword ("Comment GUIDE and I'll send it") is how you get a link to people without a clickable caption.

We wrote every caption on this page ourselves, so you won't find song lyrics or borrowed quotes here. Swap a word or add an emoji and it's yours. If you'd like one written around your own photo, our free AI Instagram caption generator does that from a one-line description. The rules further down were checked in October 2026.

Or the rules: length, the feed cut, links, hashtags, line breaks, editing.

Short Instagram captions

These all fit in the visible part of the feed, so nobody has to tap "more".

  • Small moments, big mood.
  • Proof I left the house.
  • Nothing to add.
  • This one stays on the grid.
  • Soft day, loud heart.
  • Low battery, high spirits.
  • Saving this for a rainy day.
  • No plan, no problem.

  • Elsewhere.
  • Unfiltered.
  • Finally.
  • Mine.

Attitude captions for Instagram

Attitude captions read best when they sound calm. The ones that try hard to sound tough tend to get screenshotted for the wrong reasons.

  • Not arrogant, just done explaining.
  • My standards came with the package.
  • Busy building. Updates when it's done.
  • I outgrew the version of me you remember.
  • You had my attention once. Read that again.

  • Calm face, full calendar.
  • I'm not late. The room starts when I arrive.
  • Built this mood myself.
  • Polite, but I remember everything.
  • My silence is a full sentence.
  • Level up so quietly they think it was luck.
  • I don't compete. I compare myself to last year.

  • Sorry I'm late. I didn't want to come.
  • Borrow the look. The attitude isn't for rent.
  • I saw your opinion. I've put it with the others.
  • Heels high, tolerance low.
  • Not everyone's cup of chai, and the cup is full anyway.
  • I match energy, so check yours first.

  • Face card, valid till the next breakout.

Instagram captions for business posts

For a shop or service, put the news in the first line (what's new, what's back, what's open) and leave the story for after the "more".

  • New in. Small batch. Gone when it's gone.
  • Made by hand, packed with care, shipped today.
  • You asked for it in more colors. Done.

  • Sale ends Sunday night. We asked ourselves for an extension and said no.
  • Launching Friday at 6 p.m. Set an alarm.

Captions that ask for a comment keyword

A link in a caption can't be tapped, which is why these exist. You promise something, name one word to comment, and whoever comments gets the link or file by DM, sent by you or by an automation.

  • Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to your DMs.
  • Want the recipe? Comment RECIPE and check your inbox.
  • Comment PRICE for the full price list.
  • Type LINK below and I'll DM you where to buy.
  • Comment PLAN for the 7 day workout sheet.
  • Need the template? Comment TEMPLATE.
  • Comment SIZE and I'll send the size chart.
  • Drop the word MENU for this week's menu.
  • Comment BOOK to get the booking link in your DMs.
  • Want the itinerary? Comment GOA.
  • Comment NOTES and the PDF is yours.
  • Comment JOIN for the waitlist link.

Stick to one word per post. "Comment GUIDE or LINK or just say hi" splits people, and it confuses any automation reading the comments. Go for a plain word too, because Instagram's comment filters sometimes hide comments they read as spam, and GUIDE is a safer pick than FREE or CASH. Our guide to setting up Instagram keyword triggers has more on choosing the word.

What makes a good Instagram caption?

A good caption makes one point, makes it in the first line, and sounds like the person who posted the photo. If none of the lists above fits your post, write your own with these five checks.

  1. Put the point first. The feed hides most of a caption, so the joke, the news or the offer goes in the opening sentence.
  2. Say what the photo can't. The picture already shows the beach. The caption can add which beach, who took it, or what went wrong on the way there.
  3. Ask for one thing, or nothing. A personal post needs no instruction. A business post gets a single ask, such as a comment keyword or a visit to the link in your bio.
  4. Go easy on emoji. One or two at the end of a line read fine. A row of eight pushes your words past the cut.
  5. Read it out loud. If you wouldn't say it to a friend, rewrite it until you would.

How long can an Instagram caption be?

Up to 2,200 characters. That count includes spaces, emoji, hashtags, mentions and line breaks, and it's the same for photo posts, carousels and Reels. Meta's developer documentation for publishing posts states the caption limit as "Maximum 2200 characters".

Some caption pages that rank well today give the limit as 3,000 characters, or as 2,200 words. Neither matches Meta's documentation.

That's somewhere around 330 to 400 English words, enough for a full recipe.

Short is right when the photo explains itself. Go long when there's a story or a set of instructions the picture can't hold, and still put the point in the first line.

Caption rule The number (October 2026) Where it comes from
Maximum length 2,200 characters Meta developer documentation
Visible in feed before "more" About 125 characters Creator measurement. Instagram hasn't published it
Hashtags per post or reel Up to 5 Instagram's @creators account, December 18, 2025
@mentions in a caption 20 Meta developer documentation
Clickable links None for most accounts A Meta Verified test was confirmed in March 2026
Edits after posting No limit stated Instagram Help Center

Where does Instagram cut off a caption in the feed?

After about 125 characters. The rest sits behind a grey "more" link. Instagram has never published this number. It comes from people counting on their own screens, and it moves a little with screen width. A caption with an early line break gets cut at the break.

Most guides repeat "125" as if it were a rule. Assume you get one sentence, and check the post on your own phone after publishing.

Say you run a travel page and write this:

"We spent three days in Jaipur last month and honestly it was one of the best trips we've done in a long time, so I put together a full itinerary. Comment JAIPUR and I'll send it."

The offer starts at character 147. In the feed, readers see a sentence about your holiday and then "more". Flip the order:

"Comment JAIPUR and I'll DM you our 3 day itinerary, with every cafe, fort and auto fare we paid."

That whole sentence is 96 characters, so the keyword and the offer both show before the cut. The trip story can follow for anyone who taps through.

The first line of a caption does the same job as the first second of a Reel. For patterns, see how to write Instagram hooks that stop the scroll and these hook templates with good and bad versions.

No, not for most accounts. Paste a URL into a caption and Instagram shows it as plain text. Nobody can tap it.

A small group got an exception in 2026. On March 12, Meta confirmed to Engadget that it was testing links in captions for Meta Verified subscribers. The creator who spotted the test saw an in-app message allowing up to 10 links a month, and Engadget found the link worked in the mobile app but not on Instagram's website. Meta didn't say how many accounts had it or whether it would reach everyone.

As of October 2026 we haven't found any announcement from Instagram that the test became a general feature. If you pay for Meta Verified, look for a link option when you write a caption.

For everyone else, a link can go in four places:

  • Your bio, where Instagram lets you list several links.
  • A Story, using the link sticker.
  • A DM, where links are always tappable.
  • A comment keyword that triggers that DM, which is what the keyword captions above are for.

The steps for each one are in how to post a hyperlink on Instagram.

How many hashtags should you put in a caption now?

No more than five, because five is now the limit. On December 18, 2025, Instagram's @creators account announced that Instagram would allow up to 5 hashtags in a reel or post. The ceiling had been 30 for years.

We'd use three to five and make them specific to the post: #jaipurcafes says something, #travel says almost nothing. If you're stuck, the Instagram hashtag generator suggests a short set from a topic.

Most caption guides haven't noticed that Meta's developer documentation for publishing through the API still lists 30 hashtags per caption, as of October 2026. A scheduling tool may therefore let you save a caption with 12 tags even though the app allows 5. We haven't seen Instagram explain what happens to the extra tags, so keep every caption at five or fewer wherever you write it.

Put the hashtags in the caption, not the first comment. Hiding them in a comment made sense with 30 tags. Five aren't clutter, and Instagram's own search advice (next section) says the caption is where they count.

Do keywords in a caption help people find your post?

Yes. When Adam Mosseri explained how Instagram search works, he wrote that search matches what you type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places, and gave this advice: "For a post to be found in Search, put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments." That post dates from August 2021, and it's still the clearest official statement on the subject.

For search, a caption that names its subject beats a clever one. Nobody searches for "Proof I left the house". Write "Proof I left the house: sunrise at Nandi Hills, Bangalore" and you keep the joke while adding two things people type into the search bar.

Say what the post shows and where it is, in the words your audience would use. Our Instagram SEO guide goes through the other places search reads, and the Instagram keywords guide shows how to find the words worth using. Your bio is searched too, which is one reason to fix it with the Instagram bio formula before you worry about individual captions.

How do you add line breaks in an Instagram caption?

Press return. The Instagram app keeps line breaks, including blank lines between paragraphs, so a caption typed with spacing shows with spacing.

Older advice told you to put a full stop or an invisible character on every empty line. That was a fix for a time when Instagram collapsed blank lines, and you can skip it now. If your spacing still disappears, these are the usual causes creators report:

  1. There's a space at the end of the line before the break. Delete it so the line ends on a letter or punctuation mark, then press return.
  2. You pasted from an app that uses its own formatting. Paste into your phone's notes app first, then copy from there into Instagram.

Line breaks count toward the 2,200 characters.

How do you edit a caption after posting?

You can edit a caption at any point after a post goes live, as many times as you want. Likes, comments and saves stay where they are. Instagram's Help Center covers how to add, edit or delete the caption of an existing post.

On the Instagram app (iPhone and Android):

  1. Go to your profile and open the post or reel.
  2. Tap the three dots on the post.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap the caption and make your changes.
  5. Tap Done on iPhone, or the checkmark on Android.

On a computer, open the post on instagram.com, click the three dots, choose Edit, change the text and click Done.

From the same Edit screen you can change the location, tagged accounts and alt text. You can't swap the photo or video for a different one. For that you have to delete the post and upload again.

Instagram may show the word "Edited" under a caption that has been changed. Also, if your caption carries a comment keyword that an automation is listening for, changing the word in the caption doesn't change the trigger in your tool. Update both, or people will comment the new word and get nothing.

You'll often read that editing a caption hurts reach. Instagram hasn't published anything saying so, and we can't point you to an official source either way. Fix the typo.

Why is my Instagram caption not showing or not posting?

Usually the caption has gone over one of the limits above. Instagram's error messages are vague, so check these in order:

  • Length. Anything over 2,200 characters won't post. Creators report that some emoji count as two characters, so a caption that looks like 2,150 in your notes app may be over.
  • Hashtags. Count them. More than 5 is over the current allowance.
  • Mentions. Meta's publishing documentation caps a caption at 20 @mentions. Giveaway captions that tag every partner brand run into this.
  • A caption that vanished after posting. This is most often a failed upload on a weak connection. Open the post, tap the three dots, tap Edit and paste the caption back in.

If none of that fits, update the app and try again on a different connection. Comments have their own rules for editing, and we've covered those in how to edit a comment on Instagram.

Can you send the link automatically when someone comments your keyword?

Yes. Instagram calls the feature a private reply. Meta's messaging API lets a professional account send one direct message in response to a comment on its post, reel or ad. Meta's documentation sets two limits on private replies to comments: only one message can be sent per comment, and it has to go out within 7 days of the comment.

In order, it goes like this:

  1. You publish a post with a keyword caption, such as "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it".
  2. Someone comments GUIDE.
  3. A tool connected to your account through the official API sees the comment and sends that person a DM with your link.
  4. If they reply or tap a button, a normal conversation opens and you can follow up inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.

According to the same Meta documentation, the DM lands in the main inbox if the commenter follows you and in the Requests folder if they don't. No tool can change that, so it's worth adding "check your message requests" to the caption.

You can do this by hand on a post with twenty comments. At two thousand you can't. InstantDM is one tool for the job: quick keyword automations and a visual flow builder in one place, with iPhone and Android apps so you can set it up from your phone. It's an official Meta Business Partner, runs on Instagram's official API, and connects through Instagram or Facebook login, so it never asks for your password.

Keep it safe for your account. Send automated replies only to people who commented or messaged first, and let a busy post be answered at a steady pace, since every tool on the official API has to work within Instagram's rate limits. The rules are laid out in is Instagram automation allowed and in the Instagram DM limits guide. For setup, follow the comment-to-DM automation guide.

Take a caption from the keyword list, change the word to fit your post, and publish it. If you'd like the DM to send itself, create an InstantDM account, connect Instagram, and set the same keyword as the trigger. Plans are on the pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a good caption for Instagram?

A good Instagram caption says one thing in the first line, because the feed hides the rest behind a more link after roughly 125 characters. Short lines such as Proof I left the house or Quietly winning work for personal posts. For business posts, end with one clear action.

2. How long can an Instagram caption be?

An Instagram caption can be up to 2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji, hashtags and line breaks. Meta's developer documentation lists that figure. In the feed only the opening shows before the more link, which creators measure at around 125 characters. Instagram has not published the cut-off.

3. Are links in Instagram captions clickable?

For most accounts, no. A URL pasted into a caption shows as plain text that nobody can tap. In March 2026 Meta confirmed it was testing clickable caption links for Meta Verified subscribers. As of October 2026 there is no announcement of a release to everyone.

4. How many hashtags can you use in an Instagram caption?

Up to 5. Instagram's @creators account announced on December 18, 2025 that a post or reel can carry up to 5 hashtags, down from the old ceiling of 30. Put them in the caption, since Instagram has said search reads captions, not comments.

5. How do you add line breaks in an Instagram caption?

Press return on your keyboard where you want the break. The current Instagram app keeps single line breaks and blank lines. If a blank line collapses, delete any space left at the end of the line above it, or write the caption in your notes app and paste it in.

6. Can you edit an Instagram caption after posting?

Yes. Open the post, tap the three dots, tap Edit, change the text, then tap Done on iPhone or the checkmark on Android. Instagram may show the word Edited under the caption. You can edit as many times as you like, and likes and comments stay.

7. What should I write in a caption to get comments?

Ask for one specific word. A line such as Comment GUIDE and I'll send it tells people exactly what to type and what they get. Keep the keyword short, spell it in capitals, and deliver what you promised by DM quickly, by hand or with an automation tool.

8. Do hashtags work in the comments instead of the caption?

Not for search. Adam Mosseri wrote in Instagram's explanation of search that keywords and hashtags should go in the caption, not the comments, for a post to be found. Since the 2025 change you only have 5 hashtags to place, so the caption is the right spot.
