Link Tracking & Analytics
Know exactly how many people open the links you send in DMs. Track opens, measure click-through rates, and identify your best-performing content.
What Is Link Tracking?
Link tracking in InstantDM lets you measure whether the links you send in automated DMs are actually being opened. When you include a URL in your DM reply — whether it's a product page, a sign-up form, a free guide, or any other link — InstantDM automatically creates a tracked version of that URL.
When the recipient taps the link in their DM, the open is recorded. You can then see exactly how many links were sent, how many were opened, and calculate your click-through rate (CTR). This data tells you whether your messaging is compelling enough to drive action.
How It Works
Link tracking happens automatically — you don't need to set anything up. Here's the process:
- You include a URL in your automated DM message (text, button, or flow message).
- When InstantDM sends the DM, it wraps your link in a tracked short URL.
- The recipient sees a clean short link in their DM.
- When they tap the link, InstantDM records the open and immediately redirects them to your original URL.
- The open data appears in your dashboard analytics.
The redirect is instant — the recipient won't notice any delay. They tap the link and land on your page, while InstantDM quietly records the interaction in the background.
Which Links Are Tracked?
InstantDM tracks links in the following locations:
| Link Location | Tracked? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Text messages in DM replies | ✅ Yes | Any URL in a text-based DM message |
| Button URLs | ✅ Yes | Links attached to tappable buttons in button cards |
| Flow message nodes | ✅ Yes | Links in messages sent through the Flow Editor |
| Comment replies | ❌ No | Links in public comment replies are not tracked |
Viewing Link Analytics
Your link tracking data is available on the InstantDM dashboard. Here's how to access it:
- Navigate to your Dashboard (the main overview page).
- Look for the Link Analytics section.
- You'll see key metrics: Links Sent, Links Opened, and CTR.
- Use the time range selector to view data for different periods (24 hours, 7 days, 30 days).
Key Metrics Explained
| Metric | What It Measures | How to Interpret It |
|---|---|---|
| Links Sent | Total number of tracked links delivered in DMs | Shows the reach of your link-based automations |
| Links Opened | Total number of times tracked links were tapped | Shows how many people took action on your links |
| CTR (Click-Through Rate) | Links Opened ÷ Links Sent × 100 | The percentage of recipients who opened your link. Higher is better. |
What's a Good CTR?
CTR varies by industry and content type, but here are some general benchmarks for Instagram DM links:
- Below 15% — Your messaging may need improvement. The link isn't compelling enough.
- 15–30% — Solid performance. Your audience is engaged and interested.
- 30–50% — Excellent. Your messaging is highly relevant to your audience.
- Above 50% — Outstanding. This typically happens with highly targeted, high-intent audiences.
DM links generally have higher CTRs than email links because DMs feel more personal and direct.
Link Open Trends
Beyond the headline numbers, InstantDM provides trend data so you can see how link performance changes over time:
- Hourly trend (24h) — See which hours of the day get the most link opens. This helps you understand when your audience is most active.
- Link Sent vs. Opened (24h) — A side-by-side comparison showing how many links were sent each hour versus how many were opened.
- Daily trend (7 days) — Track link performance day by day over the past week.
These charts are available on the dashboard and update in real time as new data comes in.
Identifying Your Best-Performing Links
Not all links perform equally. Some messages drive high open rates while others fall flat. Use your link analytics to identify patterns:
- Compare across posts — Which posts generate the most link opens? The content that drives shares and comments often drives link opens too.
- Compare message styles — Does a direct "Here's your link" message perform better than a longer message with context? Test both and check the data.
- Compare link placements — Do links in text messages get more opens than links in buttons? Your analytics will tell you.
- Compare time periods — Are link opens higher on weekdays or weekends? Morning or evening? Use the hourly trend to find out.
Improving Your Link Open Rate
If your CTR is lower than you'd like, here are proven strategies to improve it:
- Create urgency — "This link expires in 24 hours" drives more opens than "Here's the link."
- Be specific about what they'll get — "Tap below to download your 15-page Instagram growth guide" is better than "Click here."
- Use buttons instead of plain text links — Tappable buttons are more visually prominent and easier to interact with.
- Send the link early in the conversation — The first message has the highest engagement. Don't bury the link after three messages.
- Match the link to the trigger — If someone commented "PRICE" on your post, the DM link should go directly to your pricing page, not your homepage.

Tips and Best Practices
- Always include a link in your DM. If your automation doesn't include a link, you're missing the opportunity to drive traffic. Even a link to your profile or latest post adds value.
- Check your CTR weekly. Make it part of your routine to review link performance. A dropping CTR is an early warning that your messaging needs refreshing.
- Test different CTAs. Try different call-to-action phrases around your links and compare the open rates. Small wording changes can make a big difference.
- Use link data to inform your content strategy. Posts that drive high link opens are telling you what your audience wants. Create more content like that.
- Don't send too many links in one message. One clear link with a strong CTA outperforms a message with three competing links. Focus the recipient's attention on one action.
💡 Tip: Link tracking works automatically — you don't need to use a separate URL shortener or tracking tool. Just paste your full URL into the DM message and InstantDM handles the rest.
