Instagram Live Comment Automation

Capture leads in real time by automatically sending DMs to viewers who comment during your Instagram Live sessions.

What Is Live Comment Automation?

Live Comment Automation lets you automatically send a DM to anyone who comments a specific keyword during your Instagram Live broadcast. Instead of asking viewers to "DM me after the Live," you can capture their interest the moment they engage — while you stay focused on your content.

This is one of the most powerful lead generation tools for creators, coaches, and businesses who regularly go live on Instagram. A single Live session can generate hundreds of DM conversations without any manual effort.

How It Works

Here's what happens behind the scenes when you use Live Comment Automation:

  1. You configure trigger words and a DM reply in InstantDM before going live.
  2. You start your Instagram Live and tell viewers to comment a keyword (e.g., "Comment DEAL to get the discount link").
  3. A viewer types DEAL in the Live chat.
  4. InstantDM detects the comment, matches it against your trigger words, and sends the viewer a DM automatically.
  5. The viewer receives your DM while still watching the Live — no interruption needed.

The entire process takes just a few seconds from comment to DM delivery.

Setting Up Live Comment Automation

  1. Navigate to Instagram DM in the left sidebar.
  2. Click on the Live Automation tab.
  3. Enter your trigger words separated by commas (e.g., deal, link, info, yes).
  4. Build your DM reply using the message editor (text, buttons, image, audio, or flow).
  5. Toggle the automation ON.
  6. Start your Instagram Live session.

The automation will remain active for the duration of your Live. You can also leave it enabled between sessions — it will automatically activate whenever you go live.

Trigger Words During Live

Trigger words work the same way as Post Automation: enter keywords separated by commas, and matching is case-insensitive. When a viewer's comment contains one of your trigger words, the automation fires.

Tips for Choosing Trigger Words

  • Keep them short — Single words like link, yes, or deal are easiest for viewers to type quickly during a Live.
  • Make them unique — Avoid common words like "the" or "I" that might trigger accidentally.
  • Tell viewers exactly what to type — Say it out loud during your Live: "Type LINK in the comments to get the free guide."
  • Use multiple keywords — Add variations like link, LINK, send, info to catch different phrasings.

Auto-DM Viewers Who Comment

When a viewer comments a trigger word, InstantDM sends them a DM on your behalf. The DM can include any of the following message types:

Message TypeDescriptionBest For
TextA plain text message with emoji, links, and line breaks.Simple link delivery or thank-you messages.
ButtonsA card with title, description, and up to 3 tappable buttons.Offering multiple options (e.g., "Shop Now," "Learn More").
ImageA photo sent as a DM bubble.Sharing product images, flyers, or visual content.
AudioA voice note sent as a playable message.Personal touch — a recorded thank-you or pitch.
FlowA multi-step conversation built in the Flow Editor.Lead qualification, quizzes, or multi-step funnels.

Using the Flow Editor with Live Automation

For advanced use cases, you can connect a Flow to your Live Automation. Instead of sending a single message, the viewer enters a multi-step DM conversation that can:

  • Ask qualifying questions (e.g., "What's your budget?").
  • Branch based on the viewer's responses.
  • Deliver different content depending on their answers.
  • Collect contact information like email or phone number.
  • Tag the user for follow-up in your CRM or email tool.

To connect a flow, click Use Flow in the DM reply section and select an existing flow or create a new one. See the Flow Editor guide for details on building flows.

Duplicate DM Prevention

InstantDM automatically prevents duplicate DMs during a single Live session. If a viewer comments the trigger word multiple times, they'll only receive the automated DM once. This keeps the experience clean and avoids spamming your audience.

Testing Your Live Automation

  1. Make sure the automation is toggled ON in InstantDM.
  2. Start an Instagram Live session on your account.
  3. Open Instagram on a different account and join the Live.
  4. Comment one of your trigger words in the Live chat.
  5. Check the second account's DMs — you should receive the automated reply within seconds.
  6. If nothing happens, check Dashboard → Recent Automation Log for errors or missed triggers.

You can also do a quick test by going live briefly (even for 30 seconds) just to verify the automation works before your real broadcast.

Best Practices

  • Set up before you go live — Don't try to configure automation mid-broadcast. Have everything ready and toggled ON before you hit "Go Live."
  • Announce the trigger word clearly — Say it multiple times during your Live: "Drop LINK in the comments and I'll send it to your DMs right now."
  • Pin a comment with the trigger word — Pin a comment like "Type LINK to get the free guide" so latecomers can see it.
  • Use urgency — "This link is only available during the Live — type DEAL now!" drives more engagement.
  • Review your automation log after the Live — Check how many DMs were sent and if any triggers were missed.
