DM Sequence (Multi-Message Automation)
Send a series of timed messages instead of a single reply. Nurture leads, deliver content drips, and build conversations automatically.
What Is a DM Sequence?
A DM sequence is a chain of automated messages delivered to a user over time. Instead of firing a single DM when someone comments a trigger word, a sequence lets you send two, three, or more messages with configurable delays between each one. Think of it as a mini drip campaign inside Instagram DMs.
Sequences are ideal for onboarding flows, multi-step lead magnets, course delivery, and nurturing prospects who need more than one touchpoint before they convert.
DM Sequence vs. Single Message
| Feature | Single Message | DM Sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Messages sent | 1 message immediately | Multiple messages over time |
| Delays | None | Configurable (seconds, minutes, hours) |
| Content types | Text, buttons, image, or audio | Mix of text, buttons, images, and audio across messages |
| Use case | Quick link delivery, simple replies | Lead nurturing, course drips, onboarding flows |
| Setup complexity | Low — configure one message | Medium — requires Flow Editor |
How to Set Up a Multi-Message Sequence
- Navigate to Instagram DM in the sidebar and select the post or Reel you want to automate.
- Click Open Flow Editor to access the visual automation builder.
- Your flow starts with a Trigger node (comment trigger word). Connect it to your first Send Message node.
- Configure the first message — add text, an image, audio, or a button card.
- Drag a Smart Delay node from the node palette and connect it after the first message.
- Set the delay duration: choose seconds, minutes, or hours and enter the value.
- Add another Send Message node after the delay and configure the second message.
- Repeat steps 5–7 to add as many messages as your sequence needs.
- Toggle the automation ON and save.
Adding Different Content Types Between Messages
Each message node in your sequence can use a different content type. This keeps the conversation engaging and prevents it from feeling like a wall of text.
| Message Type | Best Used For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Introductions, explanations, links | "Hey! Here's the free guide you requested 👇" |
| Image | Product photos, infographics, screenshots | Send a product catalog image |
| Audio | Personal touch, voice notes | A 15-second welcome voice message |
| Buttons | CTAs, choices, navigation | Card with "Shop Now" and "Learn More" buttons |
Delay Configuration
The Smart Delay node controls how long InstantDM waits before sending the next message. You can configure delays in three units:
| Unit | Range | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| Seconds | 5–59 seconds | Quick follow-ups that feel conversational |
| Minutes | 1–59 minutes | Spaced content delivery, reminders |
| Hours | 1–24 hours | Daily drip sequences, next-day follow-ups |
Keep in mind that Instagram's messaging window is 24 hours. After 24 hours of no interaction from the user, you cannot send further messages. Plan your sequence timing accordingly.
When to Use Sequence vs. Single Message
- Use a single message when you just need to deliver a link, coupon code, or quick answer.
- Use a sequence when you want to build a relationship — onboarding flows, multi-part lead magnets, course modules, or follow-up reminders.
- Use a sequence when your content is too long for one message. Breaking it into digestible chunks improves read rates.
Tips & Best Practices
- Keep delays natural. A 5–10 second delay between the first and second message feels conversational. A 30-minute delay works well for a follow-up reminder.
- Mix content types. Alternate between text, images, and buttons to keep the conversation engaging.
- Respect the 24-hour window. Instagram only allows messaging within 24 hours of the last user interaction. Keep your full sequence within this window or prompt user interaction to reset it.
- Don't overdo it. 3–5 messages is the sweet spot. More than that risks feeling spammy.
- Test with a real account. Always trigger your sequence from a separate Instagram account to verify timing, content, and formatting.

Testing Your Sequence
- Make sure the automation is toggled ON and saved.
- Open Instagram on a different account (not the one connected to InstantDM).
- Comment a trigger word on the automated post.
- You should receive the first DM within seconds.
- Wait for each delay to pass and verify subsequent messages arrive on schedule.
- Check Dashboard → Recent Automation Log to confirm all messages in the sequence were delivered.
