Schedule Instagram Posts with InstantDM

Plan, schedule, and auto-publish Instagram posts, Reels, and carousels — with automation attached from day one.

What Is the Later Feature?

The Later feature in InstantDM lets you schedule Instagram posts to publish automatically at a date and time you choose. You can schedule single images, Reels (videos), and carousel posts (multiple images) — all from the InstantDM dashboard.

What makes InstantDM's scheduler unique is the ability to attach automation to scheduled posts. This means your trigger words, DM replies, and comment replies are ready to go the moment the post goes live. No need to come back and configure automation after publishing.

The Calendar View

The Later section features a visual calendar that shows all your scheduled posts at a glance. You can:

  • View scheduled posts by day, week, or month.
  • Drag and drop posts to reschedule them to a different date or time.
  • Click on any scheduled post to edit its details.
  • See which posts have automation attached (indicated by an icon).

The calendar makes it easy to plan your content strategy and ensure you're posting consistently.

Scheduling a Single Image Post

  1. Navigate to Later in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the Create button (or click on a date in the calendar).
  3. Select Image as the content type.
  4. Upload your image from your device.
  5. Write your caption (or select from saved captions).
  6. Set the publish date and time using the date picker.
  7. Optionally attach automation (trigger words, DM reply).
  8. Click Schedule to confirm.

Scheduling a Reel

  1. Navigate to Later in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the Create button.
  3. Select Reel as the content type.
  4. Upload your video file.
  5. Select a thumbnail frame — choose from auto-generated frames or upload a custom thumbnail.
  6. Write your caption.
  7. Set the publish date and time.
  8. Optionally attach automation.
  9. Click Schedule.

Selecting Thumbnail Frames for Reels

When scheduling a Reel, InstantDM lets you choose which frame of the video appears as the thumbnail (cover image). You have two options:

OptionHow It Works
Auto-Generated FramesInstantDM extracts several frames from your video. Scrub through them and pick the one that looks best.
Custom ThumbnailUpload your own image to use as the Reel's cover. This is ideal for branded thumbnails with text overlays.

Scheduling a Carousel Post

  1. Navigate to Later in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the Create button.
  3. Select Carousel as the content type.
  4. Upload multiple images (up to 10). Drag to reorder them.
  5. Write your caption.
  6. Set the publish date and time.
  7. Optionally attach automation.
  8. Click Schedule.

Setting the Publish Date and Time

Use the date picker to select the exact date and time your post should go live. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Time zone — The scheduler uses your account's time zone (configured in Settings). Make sure it's set correctly.
  • Minimum lead time — You need to schedule at least 10 minutes in the future.
  • Best times to post — Check your Analytics to find when your audience is most active.

Adding Captions

The caption editor supports everything Instagram allows:

  • Text with line breaks and emoji.
  • Hashtags (add them at the end or in a first comment).
  • @mentions of other accounts.
  • Up to 2,200 characters per caption.

Saved Captions Library

The saved captions library lets you store frequently used captions, hashtag sets, and templates for quick reuse. Here's how to use it:

  1. When writing a caption, click the Saved Captions button.
  2. Select a saved caption from the list to insert it.
  3. Edit the inserted caption as needed.
  4. To save a new caption, write it in the editor and click Save as Template.

This is especially useful for recurring hashtag sets or standard CTAs you use across multiple posts.

Attaching Automation to Scheduled Posts

One of InstantDM's most powerful features is the ability to attach automation directly to a scheduled post. When the post publishes, the automation is immediately active — no manual setup required after publishing.

Here's what you can configure:

SettingDescription
Trigger WordsKeywords that trigger the automation when someone comments them on the post.
DM ReplyThe automated DM sent to the commenter (text, buttons, image, audio, or flow).
Comment ReplyA public reply posted under the commenter's comment.
Follow GateRequire the commenter to follow you before receiving the DM.
Auto-Hide CommentsAutomatically hide trigger comments from public view.

This means you can plan your entire content + automation strategy in advance. Schedule a week's worth of posts on Sunday, each with its own automation, and let InstantDM handle the rest.

Duplicating Scheduled Posts

If you want to create a similar post with the same caption, automation, or settings, you can duplicate an existing scheduled post:

  1. Find the scheduled post in the calendar or list view.
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) on the post.
  3. Select Duplicate.
  4. A copy is created with the same media, caption, and automation settings.
  5. Edit the duplicate as needed (change the date, update the caption, swap the media).

This saves time when you're scheduling similar content across multiple days.

Editing a Scheduled Post

You can edit any scheduled post before it publishes:

  • Caption — Update the text, hashtags, or mentions.
  • Media — Swap the image or video.
  • Publish Time — Change the date or time.
  • Automation — Add, modify, or remove automation settings.

Click on the scheduled post in the calendar, make your changes, and click Save.

Canceling a Scheduled Post

To cancel a scheduled post and prevent it from publishing:

  1. Find the post in the calendar or list view.
  2. Click on the post to open its details.
  3. Click Delete or Cancel.
  4. Confirm the cancellation.

The post will be removed from the schedule and will not be published. This action cannot be undone — you'll need to recreate the post if you change your mind.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Batch your content creation — Dedicate one day per week to creating and scheduling all your posts. This frees up the rest of the week for engagement and strategy.
  • Always attach automation — If you're scheduling a post with a CTA, attach the automation at the same time. Don't rely on remembering to set it up after publishing.
  • Use saved captions for hashtags — Save your go-to hashtag sets as templates so you can insert them with one click.
  • Preview before scheduling — Double-check your media, caption, and publish time before confirming. Once published, you can't unpublish from InstantDM.
  • Check your time zone — Make sure your account time zone is correct in Settings. A wrong time zone means posts publish at unexpected times.
  • Use the calendar view — Visualize your posting schedule to ensure consistent frequency and avoid gaps or overlaps.
