Meta Ads Auto-Reply Automation
Automatically reply to comments on your Instagram and Facebook ads. Capture every lead from your paid promotions without lifting a finger.
What Is Meta Ads Automation?
Meta Ads Automation lets you automatically send DMs to people who comment on your Instagram or Facebook ads. When you're spending money on ads, every comment is a potential lead — and Meta Ads Automation makes sure none of them slip through the cracks.
Whether someone comments on a sponsored post, a boosted Reel, or clicks a click-to-message ad, InstantDM detects the engagement and sends a personalized DM within seconds. This turns ad spend into real conversations and measurable ROI.
How It Works
Meta Ads Automation works through the same Instagram API that powers all InstantDM features. Here's the process:
- You create an ad in Meta Ads Manager (or boost a post/Reel directly from Instagram).
- You configure automation in InstantDM for that ad post — trigger words, DM reply, and optional comment reply.
- Someone sees your ad and comments a trigger word (e.g., "interested," "price," "info").
- InstantDM detects the comment, matches it against your triggers, and sends the commenter a DM.
- The lead receives your message and can continue the conversation or click through to your offer.
Setting Up Automation for Ad Comments
- Navigate to Instagram DM in the left sidebar.
- Find the ad post or boosted Reel in your post list. Ads appear alongside organic posts.
- Click on the ad post to open its automation settings.
- Enter your trigger words separated by commas (e.g.,
info, price, interested, link). - Build your DM reply using text, buttons, images, or a flow.
- Optionally configure a public comment reply.
- Toggle the automation ON.
Types of Meta Ads You Can Automate
| Ad Type | How It Works | Trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsored Posts | Ads created in Meta Ads Manager that appear as sponsored content in the feed. | Comment on the ad post. |
| Boosted Reels | Reels you boost directly from Instagram to reach a wider audience. | Comment on the boosted Reel. |
| Boosted Posts | Regular posts you boost from Instagram for more reach. | Comment on the boosted post. |
| Click-to-Message Ads | Ads with a "Send Message" CTA that open a DM thread when tapped. | User sends the initial message. |
Click-to-Message Ads Automation
Click-to-message ads are a special ad format where the CTA button says "Send Message" instead of "Learn More" or "Shop Now." When someone taps the button, Instagram opens a DM thread with your account and sends a pre-filled message.
InstantDM can automatically respond to that initial message, starting an automated conversation. Here's how to set it up:
- Create a click-to-message ad in Meta Ads Manager.
- In InstantDM, go to Instagram DM → Inbox Automation or configure a flow that triggers on the initial message.
- Set up your automated reply — this could be a welcome message, a qualifying question, or a link to your offer.
- The automation fires as soon as the user sends the pre-filled message from the ad.
DM Reply Configuration
Your automated DM can include any of the standard message types:
| Message Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Text | Plain text with emoji, links, and line breaks. |
| Buttons | Card with title, description, and up to 3 tappable buttons. |
| Image | A photo sent as a DM bubble. |
| Audio | A voice note sent as a playable message. |
| Flow | A multi-step conversation from the Flow Editor. |
For ads, we recommend using Buttons or Flow — they give the lead a clear next step and keep the conversation moving toward conversion.
How It Works with Boosted Reels
Boosted Reels are one of the most popular ad formats on Instagram. When you boost a Reel, it reaches a much larger audience — and those viewers can comment just like on an organic Reel.
InstantDM treats boosted Reels the same as any other post. The automation you configure will fire on comments from both organic viewers and paid reach. There's no separate setup required — just make sure the automation is toggled ON for that Reel.
Important Notes for Boosted Reels
- The Reel must be published on your Instagram account first, then boosted.
- Automation applies to all comments on the Reel, whether from organic or paid reach.
- Boosted Reels Automation requires the Trendsetter plan or above.
Testing Your Ads Automation
- Make sure the automation is toggled ON for the ad post.
- Open Instagram on a different account.
- Find the ad post (you can search for it or access it from your profile).
- Comment one of your trigger words.
- Check the second account's DMs for the automated reply.
- Review Dashboard → Recent Automation Log to confirm the trigger fired.
For click-to-message ads, you can test by tapping the "Send Message" button on the ad from a second account and verifying the automated reply arrives.

Best Practices
- Match your DM to the ad's message — If your ad promotes a discount, the DM should deliver that discount immediately.
- Use simple trigger words — People scrolling through ads won't type long phrases. Use words like
info, price, oryes. - Include a clear CTA in the ad caption — "Comment INFO below and we'll DM you the details" tells people exactly what to do.
- Monitor your automation log — Ads can generate high volumes of comments. Check the log regularly to ensure everything is firing correctly.
- Combine with comment replies — Auto-reply to the comment publicly ("Check your DMs!") while also sending the private DM for maximum engagement.
