Instagram Story Reply Automation
Automatically send DMs when someone replies to your Instagram Stories. Turn story engagement into real conversations and leads.
What Is Story Automation?
Story Automation lets you set up automatic DM replies whenever someone responds to one of your Instagram Stories. Instead of manually replying to every story response, InstantDM detects the reply, checks your trigger conditions, and sends a personalized DM within seconds.
This is especially powerful for creators and businesses who use Stories to drive engagement. Whether you're running a poll, sharing a product teaser, or asking your audience to "DM me for the link," Story Automation handles the follow-up for you — 24/7.
How Story Automation Works
When someone replies to your Instagram Story, Instagram sends that reply as a direct message. InstantDM monitors these incoming messages and checks them against your configured triggers. If a match is found, the automation fires and sends your pre-built DM reply.
Here's the flow:
- You post an Instagram Story (e.g., "Comment LINK to get the free guide").
- A follower replies to your story with a message like "LINK please!"
- InstantDM detects the reply and checks for your trigger word (
LINK). - The automation fires and sends the follower a DM with your configured reply (e.g., a button linking to the guide).
Setting Up Story Reply Automation
- Navigate to Instagram DM in the left sidebar.
- Click on the Story Automation tab at the top of the page.
- Choose your scope: All Stories or Specific Story.
- Configure your trigger words or enable Automate All.
- Build your DM reply using the message editor.
- Toggle the automation ON.
All Stories vs. Specific Stories
InstantDM gives you two ways to scope your story automation:
| Mode | How It Works | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| All Stories | Applies to every story you post — past and future. One configuration covers everything. | Creators who want a universal reply for all story engagement. |
| Specific Story | You select individual stories from a list and configure automation for each one separately. | Businesses running targeted campaigns on specific stories. |
If you use All Stories mode, you don't need to reconfigure anything each time you post a new story. The automation applies automatically.
Keyword Matching
Trigger words let you control which story replies activate the automation. Enter keywords separated by commas (e.g., link, info, send, yes). Matching is case-insensitive, so "LINK," "Link," and "link" all work.
How Matching Works
- Contains match — If the reply message contains any of your trigger words, the automation fires.
- Multiple keywords — You can add as many trigger words as you need, separated by commas.
- Emoji and special characters — Trigger words are matched against the text portion of the reply. Emojis alone won't trigger unless you specifically add them.
Automate All (No Keywords)
If you toggle Automate All to ON, the automation fires on every story reply — regardless of what the person says. This is useful when you want to send a universal response, like a welcome message or a link to your latest offer.
DM Reply Configuration
When the automation fires, InstantDM sends a DM to the person who replied. You can configure the DM using the same message editor available in Post Automation:
| Message Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Text | A plain text message with emoji, links, and line breaks. |
| Buttons | A card with a title, description, and up to 3 tappable buttons (e.g., links, actions). |
| Image | A photo sent as a bubble in the DM conversation. |
| Audio | A voice note sent as a playable message. |
| Flow | A multi-step conversation built in the Flow Editor for advanced sequences. |
Story Mention Automation
Story Mention Automation is a separate but related feature. It triggers when someone mentions your account in their own Instagram Story — not when they reply to yours.
This is great for:
- Thanking users who share your content in their stories.
- Sending a discount code to anyone who tags your brand.
- Building relationships with fans who promote you organically.
Setting Up Story Mention Automation
- Go to Instagram DM → Story Automation.
- Look for the Story Mention section.
- Configure your DM reply (text, buttons, image, or flow).
- Toggle it ON.
Whenever someone mentions your account in their story, InstantDM sends them your configured DM automatically.
Testing Your Story Automation
- Make sure the automation is toggled ON.
- Post a story on your Instagram account (or use an existing one).
- Open Instagram on a different account.
- Reply to the story with one of your trigger words (or any message if Automate All is enabled).
- Check the second account's DMs — you should receive the automated reply within seconds.
- If nothing happens, check Dashboard → Recent Automation Log for errors.

Tips and Best Practices
- Use clear CTAs in your stories — Tell your audience exactly what to reply (e.g., "Reply YES to get the link").
- Keep trigger words simple — One-word triggers like
link, yes, orinfowork best because they're easy to type. - Combine with story stickers — Use polls, quizzes, and question stickers alongside your CTA to boost engagement.
- Test before going live — Always test from a second account to make sure the automation fires correctly.
- Use Automate All sparingly — It's powerful but can feel spammy if every reply triggers a DM. Use it when you have a universal offer.
