Viral Mode (Trending Mode)
When your post goes viral, InstantDM shifts into high gear. Viral Mode ensures every single comment gets processed — even when thousands arrive in minutes.
What Is Viral Mode?
Viral Mode is a special processing mode that activates automatically when one of your posts experiences a sudden surge in comments. Under normal conditions, InstantDM processes comments at a steady, reliable pace. But when a post goes viral — think hundreds or thousands of comments pouring in within a short window — standard processing might not keep up.
That's where Viral Mode comes in. When InstantDM detects that your post is trending, it automatically switches to a high-throughput processing mode designed to handle massive comment volumes. Every comment still gets processed, every trigger word still gets matched, and every DM still gets sent — just faster.
You don't need to do anything to activate it. Viral Mode is fully automatic. Just set up your automation as usual, and InstantDM takes care of the rest when the engagement spike hits.
How Viral Mode Activates
Viral Mode isn't something you toggle on or schedule. It's triggered by your post's actual engagement patterns. Here's how it works:
- You set up automation on a post with trigger words, DM replies, and comment replies — the usual setup.
- The post starts getting comments at a normal pace. InstantDM processes them in standard mode.
- Comment volume spikes. Maybe your Reel hits the Explore page, or an influencer shares your post. Comments start flooding in.
- InstantDM detects the surge and automatically activates Viral Mode for that specific post.
- High-throughput processing kicks in. Comments are processed at an accelerated rate to keep up with the volume.
- Volume normalizes. As the comment rate returns to normal, Viral Mode deactivates and processing returns to standard speed.
The entire process is seamless. You won't notice a disruption — just faster processing when you need it most.
Viral Mode vs. Normal Processing
| Aspect | Normal Processing | Viral Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | Always active | Automatic when comment volume spikes |
| Processing speed | Standard pace, handles typical engagement | Accelerated pace, handles massive surges |
| Comment handling | Sequential processing | High-throughput parallel processing |
| DM delivery | Standard delivery | Prioritized delivery during surges |
| User action required | None | None — fully automatic |
Checking If Viral Mode Is Active
You can see whether Viral Mode is currently active for any of your posts:
- Navigate to Instagram DM in the left sidebar.
- Look at your list of automated posts.
- Posts with Viral Mode active will display a visual indicator (a trending icon or badge) next to the post.
- Click on the post to see more details about the current processing status.
You can also check the Dashboard → Recent Automation Log to see the volume of comments being processed and confirm that Viral Mode is handling the load.
When Does Viral Mode Help Most?
Viral Mode is designed for those moments when engagement goes through the roof. Common scenarios include:
- Reels hitting the Explore page — When Instagram's algorithm picks up your Reel and shows it to millions of new viewers.
- Influencer shares — A large account shares or duets your content, driving a wave of new comments.
- Giveaway posts — Contest posts that ask people to comment to enter often generate thousands of comments in hours.
- Trending topics — Content that taps into a trending moment can see sudden, massive engagement.
- Boosted Reels — Paid promotion that drives high comment volume on your content.
What Happens Without Viral Mode?
On plans that don't include Viral Mode, comments are still processed — but at the standard rate. During a viral moment, this means:
- Comments may take longer to process during peak volume.
- There may be a delay between when someone comments and when they receive the DM.
- All comments will eventually be processed, but the response time won't be as fast.
If you regularly create content that has viral potential (Reels, giveaways, trending content), Viral Mode ensures you capture every lead in real time instead of playing catch-up.
Plan Requirements
| Feature | Required Plan |
|---|---|
| Standard comment processing | All plans (including Starter) |
| Viral Mode (automatic activation) | Trendsetter and above, all Multi plans |
| High-throughput processing | Trendsetter and above, all Multi plans |
| Viral Mode status indicator | Trendsetter and above, all Multi plans |
Viral Mode is not available on the Starter plan. If you're creating content with viral potential, upgrading to Trendsetter from Settings → Subscription ensures you're ready when the moment hits.
Tips and Best Practices
- Always have automation ready before posting. You can't predict when a post will go viral. If your automation isn't set up when the surge hits, you miss the window. Configure trigger words and DM replies before publishing.
- Use the Next Post Automation feature. Pre-configure automation for your next post so it's active the moment you publish. This is especially important for Reels, which can go viral within hours of posting.
- Keep your DM message simple during viral moments. When thousands of people are receiving your DM, a clear, concise message with one strong CTA performs better than a complex multi-step flow.
- Monitor your automation log. During a viral moment, check the Dashboard → Recent Automation Log to make sure everything is running smoothly and DMs are being delivered.
- Don't panic if you see delays. Even with Viral Mode, extremely high volumes (tens of thousands of comments) may cause slight delays. InstantDM processes every comment — it just might take a few extra seconds during the peak.
💡 Tip: Viral Mode works on a per-post basis. If you have multiple posts going viral simultaneously, each one gets its own high-throughput processing independently.
