What Is Ask Follow?
Ask Follow is a feature that turns your DM automation into a follower growth engine. When someone who doesn't follow you comments a trigger word on your post, instead of receiving the content immediately, they get a message asking them to follow you first. Once they follow and confirm, the gated content is delivered automatically.
This creates a natural exchange: the user gets valuable content, and you get a new follower. It's one of the most effective ways to convert casual engagers into followers.
How Ask Follow Works
Here's the complete flow from the user's perspective:
- A non-follower comments a trigger word on your automated post.
- InstantDM detects they don't follow you and sends a follow prompt via DM.
- The message includes a customizable title, description, and a button to open your profile.
- The user taps the button, visits your profile, and follows you.
- They return to the DM and tap the "I Followed You" confirmation button.
- InstantDM verifies the follow and delivers the gated content.
If the user was already a follower when they commented, they skip the follow prompt entirely and receive the content immediately.
Configuring the Ask Follow Message
You can customize every part of the follow prompt to match your brand voice:

Setting Up Ask Follow Step by Step
- Navigate to Instagram DM in the sidebar.
- Select the post or Reel you want to automate.
- Configure your trigger words and DM reply as usual.
- Toggle Followers Only to ON.
- The Ask Follow configuration panel appears. Customize the title, description, button text, and open profile text.
- Save your settings and toggle the automation ON.

Use Ask Follow when you want a quick, simple follow gate. Use the Flow Editor's Followers Only node when you need advanced branching or want different content paths for followers and non-followers.
Tips & Best Practices
- Make the value clear. Your follow prompt description should clearly explain what the user gets after following. "Follow to get the free pricing guide" converts better than "Please follow me."
- Use emoji in your title. A lock emoji (🔓) or checkmark (✅) in the title grabs attention and communicates the unlock concept instantly.
- Keep the button text action-oriented. "I Followed You ✅" or "Done! Send It" work better than generic text.
- Combine with comment reply. Add a public comment reply like "Check your DMs! 📩" so the user knows to look for the message.
- Test from a non-follower account. The Ask Follow prompt only appears for non-followers, so you need a test account that doesn't follow your automated account.

Testing Ask Follow
- Enable Followers Only and configure the Ask Follow message on a post.
- Open Instagram on an account that does not follow your automated account.
- Comment a trigger word on the post.
- Verify you receive the follow prompt DM (not the gated content).
- Follow the automated account from the test account.
- Tap the "I Followed You" button in the DM.
- Verify the gated content is delivered.
- Also test from a follower account to confirm they receive content immediately without the follow prompt.
