Custom Reply When Instagram Blocks DM to Private Account
When Instagram prevents your automated DM from reaching a private account, InstantDM has a backup plan — a custom comment reply so you never lose a lead.
Why DMs Get Blocked
Instagram has privacy protections that limit who can send Direct Messages to certain accounts. The most common scenario is this: someone with a private account comments a trigger word on your post, but they don't follow you. When InstantDM tries to send them a DM, Instagram blocks the delivery.
This isn't a bug or an error — it's Instagram's privacy policy in action. Private accounts have stricter messaging controls, and if the user hasn't opted in by following you, Instagram won't allow the DM through.
The result? Without a fallback, that person comments your trigger word, expects a response, and gets nothing. That's a lost lead and a bad experience. InstantDM's fallback comment reply solves this problem.
How the Fallback Works
Here's what happens step by step when someone with a private account triggers your automation:
- The user comments a trigger word on your post.
- InstantDM detects the trigger and attempts to send the configured DM.
- Instagram blocks the DM delivery (private account, not following you).
- InstantDM automatically detects the block.
- Instead of doing nothing, InstantDM posts your custom fallback comment as a reply under the user's comment.
The user still gets a response — just as a public comment instead of a private DM. You can use this comment to explain the situation and guide them on what to do next.
Setting Up the Fallback Comment Reply
- Navigate to Instagram DM in the left sidebar.
- Select the post you want to automate.
- Configure your trigger words and DM reply as usual.
- Look for the Not Followed / Private Account section in the automation settings.
- Toggle the fallback comment reply ON.
- Write your custom fallback comment message.
- Save your changes.
Writing an Effective Fallback Message
Your fallback comment is public — everyone can see it. Keep it friendly, helpful, and concise. Here are some approaches:
| Approach | Example Message |
|---|---|
| Ask them to follow | "Hey! I tried to DM you but couldn't reach your account. Follow us and comment again, and we'll send it right over! 💬" |
| Direct them to DM you | "Couldn't send you a DM — try sending us a message directly and we'll get you the link! 📩" |
| Provide the info publicly | "Couldn't reach your DMs, but here's the link: [your link]. Enjoy! 🎉" |
| Keep it simple | "Follow us and comment again to get the free guide in your DMs! 🙌" |
💡 Tip: The "ask them to follow" approach is the most effective because it grows your follower count and ensures the DM will work on their next attempt.
What Triggers the Fallback
The fallback comment reply activates in these situations:
- Private account + not following you — The most common scenario. Instagram blocks DMs to private accounts that haven't followed the sender.
- Messaging restrictions — The user has restricted who can message them in their Instagram privacy settings.
- Account limitations — Temporary Instagram restrictions on your account's messaging ability (rare, but possible during high-volume periods).
In all these cases, InstantDM detects the failed delivery and triggers the fallback automatically. You don't need to monitor for failures — the system handles it.
Multiple Fallback Messages
Just like regular comment replies, you can add multiple fallback comment texts. InstantDM will rotate through them to keep your responses looking natural and avoid repetitive comments on the same post.
Add 3–5 variations of your fallback message for the best results. Each one should convey the same information but with slightly different wording.
Combining with Follow Gate
The fallback comment reply works alongside the Follow Gate feature. Here's how they complement each other:
- Follow Gate — Checks if the user follows you before sending the DM. Non-followers get a "please follow" message in the DM.
- Fallback Comment — Activates when the DM itself can't be delivered at all. It's the safety net when even the Follow Gate message can't reach the user.
Using both together ensures every commenter gets a response, regardless of their account privacy settings or follow status.

| Automation log (blocked DM tracking) | All paid plans (Starter and above) |
Tips and Best Practices
- Always enable the fallback. There's no downside. If the DM goes through, the fallback never fires. If the DM is blocked, you still reach the user.
- Keep fallback comments short. Public comments should be concise — save the detailed content for the DM.
- Use the fallback to grow followers. Encourage blocked users to follow you. This solves the problem permanently for future interactions.
- Add multiple variations. Rotating through different fallback messages looks more natural than posting the same comment every time.
- Check your automation log regularly. The Dashboard → Recent Automation Log shows which DMs were blocked and which fallback comments were posted. If you see a high block rate, consider enabling the Follow Gate to reduce it.
Testing the Fallback
- Set up a post automation with trigger words, a DM reply, and the fallback comment enabled.
- Open Instagram on a private account that does not follow your automated account.
- Comment a trigger word on the automated post.
- You should not receive a DM (because the account is private and not following).
- Instead, check the post — your fallback comment should appear as a reply under the trigger comment.
- Verify in Dashboard → Recent Automation Log that the event shows the fallback was triggered.
