Click the button on the red banner: Connect Instagram Directly for the Instagram banner, or Connect Instagram via FB Page for the Facebook banner. Log in to the same Instagram account and approve every permission. Your automations are kept. Then resend DMs that failed while you were disconnected from Automation Recovery → Missed & Failed.
Reconnect the same way you first connected. If your Instagram is connected through a Facebook Page, use the Facebook Page option. Connecting Instagram directly is refused in that case.
Log in as the same Instagram account that is connected to InstantDM.
Steps
Look for the red banner at the top of any InstantDM page:
“Instagram conection expired! Automation Stopped.” (“Reconnect your Instagram account to use.”) with the button Connect Instagram Directly.
Or “Facebook conection expired! Automation Stopped.” (“Reconnect your facebook page to use the automation features.”) with the button Connect Instagram via FB Page.
Click the button on the banner. If there’s no banner, go to Account Settings → Safety & Limits and click Re-Connect on the Instagram Account card (or the Facebook Page card).
Log in on Instagram’s (or Facebook’s) own screen.
Approve every permission. If you untick the messaging permission, DMs can’t be sent.
You’ll see: “It worked, start automating.” and you’re taken back to InstantDM. For a Facebook Page, you first pick your Page on “Choose your IG account”.
Open Automation Recovery → Missed & Failed and Resend the DMs that failed while you were disconnected. Instagram allows this within 7 days of a comment and 24 hours of a message.
On the phone app
Tap the Connection Expired banner on the Instagram screen, or go to profile photo → Settings → Safety & Limits → Instagram Account → Re-Connect.
Choose Reconnect Same Account (or Different Account for a fresh Instagram login), then log in and approve.
Facebook Page reconnects open the website, because the app can’t do Facebook login.
Good to know
While disconnected, nothing is sent. Missed DMs show in Missed & Failed.
Once you have reconnected, failures from the disconnected period are safe to resend.
You may get an email “Your Instagram disconnected — DMs stopped”, and reminders while it stays disconnected.
The Need Help? button at the bottom of the left menu opens “Is your Automation not working?” with both reconnect buttons.
If Home shows “Instagram & Facebook Page Mismatch”, your Page is linked to a different Instagram account. Use Reconnect FB Page to pick the right Page, or Disconnect FB Page.
What you can’t do
Keep automations running without a working connection.
Connect Instagram directly while a Facebook Page connection is active. Disconnect the Page first in Safety & Limits.
If it doesn’t work
“Your account is connected through a Facebook Page. Please reconnect using your Facebook Page instead of connecting Instagram directly.”: use Connect Instagram via FB Page.
An error on the connect page: click Try Reconnecting your IG Account. “If this error continues, try logging out from both InstantDM and Instagram, then log back in and reconnect.” See can’t connect Instagram.
Still not working after reconnecting: open Need Help? → Not working after reconnected?, or email hey@instantdm.com.
Questions people also ask
Will I lose my automations when I reconnect?
No. Reconnecting only logs InstantDM in to Instagram again. Your automations and settings are kept.
Why did my connection expire?
Instagram signed InstantDM out. This often happens after you change your Instagram password.
How often do I need to reconnect?
There is no fixed schedule. Reconnect whenever the red banner appears. You may also get an email when the connection stops.
I reconnected and it still doesn't work. What now?
Check that you approved every permission on Meta's screen. Then work through the checklist in Why didn't my automation send a DM, or email hey@instantdm.com.
