How do I send answers from a flow to another app?

  • Works on: Web app
  • Plan: Trendsetter and above

Short answer

Two ways. Switch on Webhook in the flow's Integrations and tick Question Answered or Flow Completed in API & MCP, Webhooks. Or add an HTTP Request step where you want the data sent, and choose the URL and fields yourself. Both are on Trendsetter and above.

A flow is a multi-step chat built in Flow Automation. When people answer its questions (email, phone, budget), you can send those answers to another app as they come in.

Before you start

Steps

Way 1: the flow’s Webhook switch

  1. On Home, click API & MCP, then Webhooks.
  2. Switch on Enable Webhook and paste your Webhook URL.
  3. Under Subscribe to Events, tick Question Answered (sent after each answer), Flow Completed (sent once at the end with all answers), or both.
  4. Click Save Configuration.
  5. Open your flow: Flow Automation in the sidebar, then click the flow.
  6. Click Integrations at the top right and switch on Webhook. Click Done.
  7. Click Set Live.

The Integrations window says the webhook URL is set “in Settings”. It’s actually set in API & MCP → Webhooks, as in steps 1 to 4.

Way 2: an HTTP Request step

  1. In the flow editor, click + and choose Data → HTTP Request.
  2. Pick the method (POST for most apps) and paste the URL.
  3. To send answers, type {{ and pick a field, for example {{email}} or {{phone}}. Put them in the URL or the JSON body.
  4. Add a header with Add header if your app asks for a key. If you send a JSON body, also add the header Content-Type with the value application/json: InstantDM doesn’t add it for you.
  5. Optional: under Save from response, save a value the app sends back onto the contact.
  6. Connect the Success and Failure dots to the next steps.
  7. Click Set Live.

On the phone app

The phone app can’t edit flows or integrations. Use the web app at app.instantdm.com for this.

What your followers see

Nothing. Sending data happens in the background. With an HTTP Request step, they get whatever message you connected to Success or Failure.

Good to know

  • Both ways send once, with no retry. The HTTP Request step waits up to 10 seconds; a slow app counts as Failure.
  • Flow Completed never fires for flows that end on a button or link card. Use Question Answered to be safe.
  • The When to push data option in Integrations is for Mailchimp, Kit and Klaviyo. The webhook sends whichever events you ticked.
  • Webhook deliveries show in API & MCP → Delivery Logs for 7 days. HTTP Request steps don’t appear there.
  • The HTTP Request step can’t reach private or internal network addresses.

What you can’t do

  • Retry a failed delivery.
  • Log in to an app with OAuth inside the HTTP Request step. Use an API key in a header instead.
  • Send Lead Gen answers to other apps. Only Flow Automation does this.

How to turn it off

Open the flow, click Integrations, switch off Webhook, click Done, then Set Live. Or delete the HTTP Request step and Set Live again.

If it doesn’t work

  • Nothing arrives → check that Question Answered or Flow Completed is ticked in Webhooks, and that Webhook is on in the flow’s Integrations.
  • Only some answers arrive → the person typed an answer in a format the question rejects. See Which answers will the email, phone and name questions accept?
  • HTTP Request always goes to Failure → test the URL in your app, and check the header and body.

Questions people also ask

Which way should I pick?

Use the Webhook switch if you just want every answer delivered to Make or Zapier. Use the HTTP Request step if you need a specific URL, your own fields, or a different next message when the call fails.

Why does Flow Completed never arrive?

Flows that end on a button or link card are never marked complete. Tick Question Answered instead, which sends each answer as it comes in.

Can I send answers to Mailchimp, Kit or Klaviyo?

Yes, with their own switches in the same Integrations window. See the Mailchimp, Kit and Klaviyo guides.

Does Lead Gen send data to webhooks?

No. Lead Gen has no integrations. Use a Flow Automation if you need to send answers to another app.
