How do I turn off, edit or delete an automation?

  • Works on: Web app, iPhone app, Android app

Short answer

For a post, open Quick Automation, Instagram, Posts, click the post and switch off the Send Link or PDF card (or the Lead Gen switch), then click Disable. Click the card instead to edit it, then Publish. Post automations can't be deleted, only switched off. DM automations and flows are switched off from their own lists.

Before you start

  • In the posts grid, each post shows a tag: Automated (its own automation), Flow Editor (a flow), Global Automated (only your all-posts automation) or Not Automated.
  • If you have an all-posts automation, switching off a post’s own automation means the all-posts one answers that post from then on.

Steps

  1. Open Quick Automation and click the Instagram tab (or Facebook for Page posts).
  2. Choose Posts (or Stories) and click the post.
  3. On “Post Automations”, find the Send Link or PDF card.
  4. To edit: click the card, make your changes and click Publish. You’ll see “Automated Successfully!”.
  5. To turn it off: click the switch on the card. In “Are you sure want to disable Auto Reply?”, click Disable. You’ll see “Automation Updated”.
  6. For Lead Gen on the same page: click the Lead Gen switch, then Disable in “Are you sure want to disable Lead Gen?”. You’ll see “Lead Gen disabled”.

Other kinds of automation

  • DM keyword automations: Quick Automation → Instagram (or Facebook) → switch to DM Automation. Turn the switch on a row off (“Automation deactivated (Draft Mode)”). To turn it back on, open it and publish (“Please go inside the configuration to activate it.”). Delete with the bin icon (“Delete this automation?”).
  • All-posts automations: Quick Automation → Instagram → Posts → expand Global Posts Automation → Edit, then switch off its card as in step 5.
  • Automation Groups: Quick Automation → Group Automation → My Automation Groups. Edit changes all posts in the group. Delete group removes only the group: “Your posts stay automated.” Switch each post off as in step 5.
  • Next post (not attached yet): Quick Automation → Next Post Automation, click it to edit.
  • Flows: Flow Automation in the sidebar, then turn the row’s switch off: “Unpublish this automation? This will stop the automation.” The flow moves to Draft. See How do I turn a flow on?
  • Everything at once: Account Settings → Automation → Automation Controls → set Global to Off → Save. See What do the switches in Account Settings > Automation do?

On the phone app

  • Post or story: on Manage Post, flip the Send Link or Images switch off. You’ll see “Automation is Stopped!” and the header shows AUTOMATION OFF. Flipping it back on opens the editor, and you must tap Publish again.
  • Edit: tap the Send Link or Images card, change it and tap Publish.
  • DM tab automations: flip the switch off and confirm Deactivate. Delete with the trash icon.
  • Pause everything: profile photo → Settings → Automation → Global Automation off → Save Changes.
  • Don’t edit a post in the app if it has a Lead Gen automation from the web. Publishing from the app removes that Lead Gen.
  • Turn flows off from the web app.

What your followers see

Nothing. After you switch an automation off, new comments or messages simply get no automatic reply. Messages already sent stay in their inbox.

Good to know

  • Post, story and all-posts automations have no delete button. Switch them off instead. Your setup is kept.
  • Send Link or PDF and Lead Gen can both look on for one post, but only the one you saved last runs. See Which automation runs?
  • Removing a post from a Send Link & PDF group does not switch that post off. Switch it off on the post itself.

What you can’t do

  • Delete a post automation completely. You can only switch it off.
  • Schedule an automation to switch off at a certain time.
  • Undo a published change. Edit it again and publish.

How to turn it off

That is this guide. For a short pause of everything, use Global in Automation Controls.

If it doesn’t work

  • Switched off but people still get DMs: your all-posts automation may be answering that post. Check for the Global Automated tag and switch off the all-posts automation too.
  • DM automation won’t switch on from the list (“Please go inside the configuration to activate it.”): open it and publish.
  • Still getting replies after Global Off: make sure you clicked Save in Account Settings.

Questions people also ask

Do I lose my setup when I switch an automation off?

No. The confirmation says 'You can enable at anytime with current configuration.' Switch it back on, check it and publish.

How do I stop everything at once?

Go to Account Settings, Automation tab, Automation Controls, set Global to Off and click Save. All automations stop until you turn it back on.

I changed the message. Why do people still get the old one?

Changes only count after you click Publish (Set Live for flows). Open the automation again and publish.
