How do I send several DMs in a row?

  • Works on: Web app, iPhone app, Android app
  • Plan: Legend Pro and above
  • 5 min
  • Last checked

Short answer

In the comment automation editor, turn on the Welcome Message, then under Send a DM! choose DM Sequence. Add up to 10 messages with + Add Message and set a delay in minutes for message 2 onward. After the person taps the welcome button, the messages arrive in order. DM Sequence is on Legend Pro and above.

Before you start

  • You need Legend Pro or a higher plan.
  • Turn on the Welcome Message or the follow gate first. Without one of them you see “Enable welcome message to use DM Sequences.” when you add a second message.

Steps

  1. Open the post’s editor: Quick Automation → Instagram → Posts → click the post → Send Link or PDF card.
  2. Turn on Welcome Message and edit its text and button.
  3. Under Send a DM!, choose DM Sequence (“Send multiple DMs with images and voice notes.”).
  4. In Message 1, pick a type with the tabs: Text, Button, image, audio (voice note) or file. Fill it in.
  5. Click + Add Message for the next message.
  6. In Message 2 and later, set Delay (minutes): how long to wait after the previous message.
  7. Repeat for up to 10 messages. Use Delete to remove one.
  8. Click Publish.

On the phone app

In the post editor (Send Link or Images → Edit Automation), open Send a DM! and choose DM Sequence (“Create up to 10 messages in your sequence”). Each message can be text, a button card, an image, audio or a PDF. From message 2 on, set “⏱️ Send after [ ] minutes (0 - 1440)”. Add more with + Add Message, then tap Publish.

What your followers see

  1. They comment your word and get the welcome message with a button.
  2. They tap the button.
  3. Message 1 arrives.
  4. Each later message arrives after the delay you set.

Good to know

  • Each message is one DM and uses 1 credit on plans with credits.
  • The public reply under the comment is posted once, not for every message.
  • Text and button messages have their own Track link clicks switch.
  • Keep delays short. A long wait means people may have moved on, and after 24 hours Instagram blocks the message.

What you can’t do

How to turn it off

Switch back to Single Message, or switch off the automation. See turn off, edit or delete an automation.

If it doesn’t work

  • “Enable welcome message to use DM Sequences.”: turn on Welcome Message or the follow gate.
  • Only the welcome message arrived: the person hasn’t tapped its button yet.
  • A later message never came: check Automation Recovery → Missed & Failed for the reason. See How do I resend DMs that failed?

Questions people also ask

Why do I need the Welcome Message for a sequence?

Instagram allows one private reply to a comment. When the person taps the welcome button, a normal chat opens and the rest of your messages can follow. That is why a second message needs the Welcome Message or the follow gate on.

Can the next message wait until the person replies?

No. A DM Sequence sends on a timer. To wait for an answer or react to it, use Flow Automation (Trendsetter and above).

How long can the delay between messages be?

You set it in minutes. Instagram only lets you message someone within 24 hours of their last message or button tap, so keep the whole sequence inside 24 hours.
